Today’s NYT Connections puzzle is the Tuesday, May 6, 2025 game, #695. The grid mixes a group about silence, tennis competition terms, words meaning comparatively small, and a purple wordplay group. Hints come first below; the full answers follow.

Hints for Connections #695

Try these clues before revealing the groups, ordered from yellow to purple:

  • Yellow: Tranquility.
  • Green: Wimbledon words.
  • Blue: Tiny.
  • Purple: Roasting at the start.

A second set of nudges: think “shhh” for yellow; for green, avoid love to win; for blue, consider what can happen to clothes in a dryer; and for purple, look closely at the words “tauntaun” and “jiberish.”

Today’s Connections words

HUSH, RIBBON, BABY, TOY, MINUTE, MOCKINGBIRD, GAME, RAZZMATAZZ, STILL, SET, COMPACT, PEACE, MATCH, CALM, KIDNEY, TOURNAMENT.

Connections #695 answers

Spoilers below: these are the four intended groups and their answers.

Yellow — SILENCE

CALM, HUSH, PEACE, STILL

Green — TENNIS COMPETITION UNITS

GAME, MATCH, SET, TOURNAMENT

Blue — COMPARATIVELY SMALL

BABY, COMPACT, MINUTE, TOY

Purple — STARTING WITH SYNONYMS FOR “TEASE”

KIDNEY, MOCKINGBIRD, RAZZMATAZZ, RIBBON

The purple connection is at the beginning of each word: “kid,” “mock,” “razz,” and “rib” can each be used as a synonym for tease. The words then continue in different directions, which makes this group less obvious than a straightforward meaning-based match.

Why the groups can be tricky

Connections asks players to find four sets of four words that share a theme. Some words can suggest more than one plausible relationship, so the challenge is finding the intended rule that works consistently across all four words. In this grid, BABY and TOY may both suggest smallness, but the complete blue group also includes COMPACT and MINUTE. The purple set depends on the opening sound or word fragment rather than the full word’s meaning.

The New York Times describes Connections as “a word game that challenges players to find themes between words.” The game presents 16 words for four groups; yellow is the easiest color and purple the trickiest. The daily puzzle becomes available at midnight in the player’s timezone. Official play options include the NYT Connections page, the NYT Games app, nytimes.com/theathletic, and the NYT News app.
