For the simplest gameplay stream, use your console’s built-in broadcast feature. Choose an encoder if you need overlays, external audio or video, or more control over the production. Whichever route you take, enable live streaming early, test with the same kind of gameplay and audio you plan to use, and leave upload bandwidth in reserve.
How do I stream gameplay on YouTube?
First choose between streaming directly from a console and using an encoder. A console is a straightforward starting point when its broadcast features cover what you need. An encoder—software or hardware—suits a setup with capture, overlays, or external microphones and cameras. Neither route is universally best; the right choice depends on the controls and equipment you want to use.
Stream directly from a console
Modern PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles can stream directly to YouTube. Follow the instructions for your specific console and account. This can avoid a separate computer and encoder, but production options depend on the console’s built-in broadcast features.
Stream through an encoder
An encoder takes the gameplay and other sources you select, then sends the feed to YouTube. This route offers more scope for scenes, overlays, external audio, and cameras, but requires setting up the encoder and connecting it to YouTube with a stream URL and key. YouTube does not designate one encoder as best for every creator.

Check channel eligibility before stream day
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; streamers must be at least 16. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so complete that step well before your planned broadcast. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
Set up an encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule the stream. Use the Live Control Room to configure the broadcast. Set it up well in advance; YouTube recommends configuring an encoder at least two hours before an event.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into your encoder. The key is the credential that lets the encoder send video to your channel. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control your stream.
- Set the encoder’s video and audio sources. Select the gameplay capture and any commentary microphone, camera, or other sources you intend to use. Check that the correct game and microphone are active in the scene.
- Start the encoder and inspect the Live Control Room preview. YouTube recommends starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. Confirm the picture and sound in the preview, then use the Live Control Room control to start the broadcast when you are ready.
For an encoder walkthrough and current connection details, see YouTube: Go live with an encoder.
What bitrate should I use for 1080p 60fps?
Use the rate that matches your resolution, frame rate, and codec, then confirm the computer and upload connection can sustain it. YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026, include these values:

| Video mode | H.264 recommendation | AV1/H.265 recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 720p, 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 34 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 4K, 60 fps | 50 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
These are YouTube-recommended video bitrates, not guaranteed minimum internet speeds. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Its general RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs, and recommends RTMPS when available. Check the current table and encoder guidance before a time-sensitive setup: YouTube: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
If you are new to streaming, 720p60 or 1080p60 can be a sensible starting target only if your PC and connection can hold a stable stream at the chosen settings. A higher resolution is not automatically better if it causes dropped frames or buffering.
How much upload speed do I need to stream?
Measure upload capacity, not download speed. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. For example, a 17 Mbps video bitrate alone calls for more than 17 Mbps of usable upload capacity; preserve additional room for audio and network variation rather than treating the recommendation as a speed-test target. Shared networks can cut into the capacity available to your stream.

If you send a backup stream as well as a primary stream, include both bitrates in the total before adding the recommended headroom. YouTube’s network guidance explains the bandwidth calculation: YouTube: Troubleshoot your live stream.
Rehearse and monitor the broadcast
Test before the event using gameplay motion and audio similar to what you will stream. Fast movement, effects, and commentary can expose issues that a static menu does not. Check the Live Control Room preview before starting, then keep an eye on stream health and audio/video quality while live. YouTube’s setup guidance recommends testing ahead of time and monitoring the feed: YouTube: Encoder settings and streaming tips.

Choose latency, protect the connection, and keep a replay
Latency versus buffering
Latency is the delay between capturing the gameplay and viewers seeing it. Lower latency can make chat interaction quicker, but may increase playback buffering. Choose based on whether fast back-and-forth with viewers matters more than playback resilience. RTMPS is RTMP sent over a TLS/SSL connection, encrypting the stream in transit to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes latency options and protocols.

HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency; YouTube says ultra-low latency is unavailable when HLS is selected. It is not necessary to choose HLS for ordinary gameplay streaming.
Keep your own recording
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the replay matters, record a local copy and check YouTube’s archive after the broadcast rather than assuming it was saved. YouTube: Archive live streams

Equipment: start with what you have
You do not need expensive equipment to begin. YouTube identifies microphones, webcams, and headphones as common gear for gaming and casual streams, but they are optional; encoders can also work with external audio and video hardware. If viewers struggle to hear commentary, an external microphone is a practical upgrade to consider. Choose only after checking compatibility with your console or computer and how you will monitor its audio. YouTube: Live streaming tips
Troubleshooting common gameplay stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot enable live streaming in time | First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, or the channel may not meet eligibility requirements. | Verify the channel and check for live-streaming restrictions before scheduling a broadcast. |
| The preview is missing or the stream will not connect | The encoder may have the wrong stream URL or key, or the encoder has not started. | Recheck the URL and key in YouTube Studio and the encoder; start the encoder early enough to inspect the preview. |
| Video is unstable or viewers report buffering | The chosen bitrate may exceed usable upload capacity, or the network may be shared. | Check upload bandwidth, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and lower bitrate or resolution if necessary. |
| Commentary or game audio is absent | The wrong audio source may be selected, muted, or poorly balanced. | Test the actual game and microphone sources in rehearsal and listen through the preview or another device. |
| The replay is missing | The archive may not have been captured, particularly for a stream exceeding 12 hours. | Check the channel archive and use a local recording when the replay is important. |
