Spend the preceding days gathering building materials, securing dependable weapons, making ammunition or another attack option, and stockpiling healing and repair supplies. Do not wait for a massive fortress: an oversized build consumes resources you need for weapons, repairs, and mobility, while a compact design lets you see where the pressure is coming from and respond before one breach becomes a collapse.

What Horde Night is testing
Horde Night is a siege, not a normal night of wandering enemies. Your base must do three jobs at once: make zombies approach through a route you can predict, delay or damage them before they reach you, and give you enough room to attack, repair, and retreat. The official wiki describes a base as never being perfectly safe from zombies, so the goal is controlled failure rather than an assumption of invulnerability.

Difficulty changes with progression and game settings. Multiplayer, loot settings, enemy behavior, and the version you are playing can all change how much pressure reaches your position. There is no authoritative universal zombie count, survival percentage, or damage number to build around. Design for a siege that can escalate, and keep a way out if the first position stops being defensible.
Choose a small position before you choose a grand base
Use the resources you can replace
Early players generally have more time than materials. A large compound requires more blocks, more repairs, and more exposed surfaces, and it can leave you without ammunition or a usable fallback. The official Beginners Guide recommends starting small; a hut combined with a trench and spikes is presented as an option when resources are limited. That principle matters even when you later build a permanent base: make the first Horde Night position compact enough to finish and repair in daylight.

Temporary does not mean careless
A temporary point of interest can be a practical first shelter if it gives you a defensible upper position, a clear approach, and somewhere to move when the exterior fails. Inspect every side before nightfall. Remove or block routes that let zombies reach you from several directions, and do not rely on a door that you cannot repair while under attack. If the structure has too many entrances or weak floors, use it only as a starting shelter while you build a dedicated fighting position nearby.
Build for access, not appearance
Leave yourself enough room to reach damaged blocks and traps without stepping into the enemy lane. A beautiful base that hides the approach or places repairs behind the player is less useful than a plain platform with a clear view. Keep storage, crafting, and sleeping areas out of the immediate fighting position so a breach does not trap you among your supplies.

Create one obvious approach
A funnel or chokepoint concentrates enemies into a predictable lane. The official Defense Tactics guidance describes trap-filled hallways that force approaching zombies toward a controlled mouth. Your version can be simple: remove alternate paths, place barriers so the intended lane is the easiest route, and position your attack point where you can see the full approach.

Several equally direct routes split your attention and spread damage across the base. If you cannot watch all of them, close or redirect them. A route should be narrow enough to keep enemies together but wide enough for you to attack and repair without getting pinned. Test your movement through it in daylight; if you cannot turn, reach a damaged block, or step back cleanly, the lane is too tight.
Separate the attack point from the obstacle field
Put delays and traps between the approaching zombies and your fighting position. This gives you time to shoot, use a melee weapon, or repair before the enemy reaches the inner layer. Do not place every obstacle at the mouth of your base. A little distance creates reaction time and makes a damaged trap replaceable without opening your main wall.
Layer walls, traps, and a fallback
First layer: cheap delay
Wood spikes, pits, hatches, and poles are examples of affordable obstacles that slow or damage enemies. Their value is time: every second spent crossing or breaking the outer layer is a second in which you can attack or repair. Use materials you can replenish, and expect to replace damaged traps rather than treating them as permanent installations.

Second layer: a real inner position
A second wall or inner fighting position prevents one broken exterior from ending the night. The official wiki recommends layered defenses for exactly this reason. Leave enough space between layers to work on the outer one when conditions allow, but not so much that zombies can gather unseen beside the inner wall. A protected hatch, pole arrangement, or elevated firing opening can keep enemies concentrated while giving you a physical barrier.
Fallback route: decide before the breach
Choose the route you will use if the fighting position collapses. It might lead to an inner room, a second platform, or open ground from which you can keep moving. Keep it clear of storage and construction clutter, and test it in daylight. The fallback is not a plan to abandon the base immediately; it is insurance against staying in a position that is already failing.
Prepare during the days before the horde
The game’s official description frames daytime as the period for looting, mining, crafting, and strengthening defenses. Treat every day as a short list of jobs rather than waiting until the final evening.

- Build - Take over a ruin, or build from the ground-up. Design your fortress to include traps and defensive positions to survive the undead - the world is fully destructible and moldable.
- Cooperate or Compete - Includes two player split screen mode, with additional online multiplayer modes and features to be revealed in the near future.
- Create - Unleash your creativity and build the ultimate world by yourself friends. Enjoy unlimited access to nearly 400 in-game items and 1,200 unique building blocks in creative mode.
- Improve - Increase your skills in a multitude of active and passive disciplines. 7 to Die is the only true survival RPG with nearly 50 multi-tiered skill and perk groups.
- Secure shelter and a basic weapon. Early guidance emphasizes having somewhere defensible to spend the night and carrying a weapon before you start long scavenging trips.
- Collect building and repair materials. Gather enough for the outer delay layer, the inner wall, and repeated repairs. Count what you can replace, not just what is needed for the first construction.
- Set the route. Close competing approaches, place the funnel, and verify that the attack lane is visible from your fighting position.
- Add the first traps. Install spikes, pits, hatches, poles, or another affordable delay. Leave access for replacement rather than sealing the traps behind a permanent wall.
- Prepare attacks. Craft or find a dependable primary weapon, then obtain ammunition or a practical alternate weapon for when the primary option is empty, damaged, or poorly suited to close range.
- Stock healing and building supplies. Carry healing items, building blocks, and repair materials into the event. Exact quantities depend on your character, settings, and play style; the important point is to keep them on hand instead of in a distant chest.
- Finish repairs before nightfall. Replace damaged traps, restore weak blocks, and remove anything that obstructs your escape. Repairs and trap replacement are routine siege work, not evidence that the design has failed.
An example early-game progression
The official Defense Tactics page gives one illustrative target: obtain a forge and steel tools by about Day 4, then aim for a crossbow by about Day 7, assuming you can keep equipment repaired. Treat those milestones as an example rather than a universal requirement. Loot availability, multiplayer, game settings, and version can move the timeline substantially. A player who has not reached those items can still apply the underlying priorities: establish a route, improve the shelter, and maintain a weapon and repair loop.
Build and carry the right fighting kit
Primary and backup attacks
Choose a primary weapon you can use accurately from your fighting position. Bring a backup weapon or alternate attack for ammunition shortages, durability problems, or enemies that reach melee range. No universal quantity of ammunition applies, so carry what your available resources and settings support and reserve enough for an extended defense rather than spending everything while testing the base.
Repair and construction supplies
Put repair materials and building blocks where you can reach them without leaving the protected position. A repair tool is useful only if its required materials are also available. Keep a small emergency stack for the inner wall and escape route; using every block on the outer layer can leave you unable to close a breach.

Healing and mobility
Keep healing items in an immediately accessible slot. Leave your movement path free of furniture, chests, and decorative pieces. Mobility is a defense: it lets you step back from a broken trap, reach the inner layer, or use the fallback route before enemies surround the position.

Watch the lane, not the whole horizon
Begin from the prepared fighting position and let the route do its job. Attack enemies while they are delayed or concentrated, then inspect the nearest obstacle whenever there is a lull. If a trap breaks, repair it only when you can do so without standing in the enemy path. A controlled lane is valuable because it lets you alternate between attacking and maintenance instead of reacting to threats from every side.

Prioritize screamers
Kill screamer zombies quickly when they appear. The official tactics guidance warns that screamers can create more enemies, turning a manageable stream into additional pressure. Do not abandon a safe position for a distant target if doing so opens the base; use your controlled firing lane and return to repairs as soon as the immediate threat is handled.
Move inward before the collapse
Watch for signs that the outer layer is no longer buying time: traps are disappearing faster than you can replace them, zombies are reaching the wall repeatedly, or repairs force you into the lane. Move to the inner position while it is still reachable. If that layer also fails, take the planned fallback route rather than trying to defend a collapsing corner at any cost.
Compare common first-Horde-Night base choices
| Base choice | Resource cost | Path control | Repair access | Fallback depth | Upgrade room |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary point of interest | Low initial construction cost, but inspect and reinforce weak sections | Varies; block alternate entrances before relying on it | Often uneven; check every exposed side in daylight | Depends on interior rooms and exits | Limited unless the structure accepts added walls and traps |
| Compact spike-and-trench base | Affordable when basic materials are available; traps require replacement | Strong if the trench and mouth create one obvious lane | Good when the trench and fighting position remain reachable | Can include an inner wall and a clear escape route | Can later accept stronger blocks, additional traps, power, or turrets |
| Dedicated horde base | Higher construction and repair commitment | Designed specifically for a controlled approach | Good only if the design includes safe maintenance access | Should include inner layers and a planned fallback | Best potential, provided upgrades do not create new routes |
Choose the row you can complete and maintain before the event, not the one with the highest theoretical ceiling. A dedicated design that is unfinished or impossible to repair is less dependable than a compact structure you understand.
Quick Recap
Common failure modes and the fix
- Building too large: You run out of materials or cannot inspect every wall. Shrink the footprint and concentrate resources on one lane and two defensive layers.
- Multiple direct entrances: Zombies split your attention. Close or redirect all but one obvious approach.
- Traps with no maintenance access: A broken outer layer becomes an immediate breach. Leave a protected route to reach and replace traps.
- No inner position: One failed wall ends the defense. Add a second wall, protected room, or elevated position before decorating the base.
- No escape plan: Panic causes players to run through blocked corridors. Mark and test a fallback route in daylight.
- Ignoring screamers: Additional enemies increase pressure. Target them promptly from the controlled lane.
- Repairing too late: Waiting until a block is nearly gone leaves no safe work window. Repair during lulls and complete all routine maintenance before nightfall.
- Assuming one design is universally safe: Progression and settings change the challenge. Treat every horde as a test of your route, repairs, and fallback rather than relying on a fixed enemy count.
