What tModLoader is—and what it is not
tModLoader is an open-source, community-driven modification and expansion platform for Terraria. It provides a separate client in which you can install one mod or a larger collection, then play alone or with other people using the same modded environment.

It is not a replacement for Terraria. The Steam listing describes tModLoader as a free Terraria mod/DLC and requires ownership of the base game. Keep the two installations conceptually separate: launch vanilla Terraria for an unmodded session and launch the tModLoader entry when you want mods. This separation makes it easier to tell whether a problem belongs to the base game or to a modded setup.
What you need before installing
A legitimate Terraria PC copy
You must own Terraria for PC. Installing the free tModLoader entry does not provide the base game, and tModLoader cannot be used as a standalone substitute for Terraria.

- In Terraria, every world is unique-from the floating islands in the sky to the deepest level of The Underworld. Adventure to the ends of the earth, and defeat villainous bosses along the way. The world is your canvas!
The separate Steam entry
On Steam, search the store or your library for tModLoader and install that entry separately from Terraria. Steam Workshop integration is supported, and tModLoader also provides an in-game mod browser. The Steam route is the simplest starting point because installation and updates are handled through the client you already use for Terraria.
Guide-reported computer requirements
The following figures come from a tModLoader.org getting-started guide marked updated September 2025. They are guide-reported minimums, not a timeless specification from the project maintainers; check current requirements if your operating system or hardware is older.
| Platform | Operating system listed by the guide | Memory | Free disk space |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 7 SP1 or later | 2 GB RAM minimum | 1 GB |
| macOS | macOS 10.12 or later | 2 GB RAM | 1 GB |
| Linux | Ubuntu 16.04 or equivalent | 2 GB RAM | 1 GB |
These figures describe the guide’s baseline for the client itself. A heavily modded world can have additional storage, memory, and compatibility considerations, so treat the table as a starting check rather than a guarantee that every mod combination will run well.
How to install tModLoader on Steam
- Open the Steam client and search for tModLoader.
- Open the separate tModLoader library or store entry and choose Install. It is free, but Terraria ownership is still required.
- After installation, select tModLoader in your Steam library and choose Play.
- Allow the first launch to finish creating its mod directories and configuration. Do not assume that the folders exist before this initial run.
- Close and relaunch from the tModLoader library entry whenever you want to play modded Terraria. Use the ordinary Terraria entry for a vanilla session.
The first-launch folder creation is normal. If you are looking for mod files immediately after installing but before starting the client, launch tModLoader once so it can create the expected structure.
How to install your first mod
Start with one or a few well-maintained utility or quality-of-life mods. A small first setup gives you a clear baseline: if the game loads successfully, you know the client and initial mod are working before you add more variables.

- Launch tModLoader from Steam.
- Open Workshop → Download Mods.
- Search for a mod by name, or browse the available listings.
- Use the available sorting and filtering tools to organize results by popularity, recency, alphabetical order, or category.
- Open the mod’s description and inspect its dependency list before downloading or enabling it. Read compatibility notes and any stated version information.
- Open Workshop → Manage Mods.
- Find the downloaded mod and enable it.
- Choose Reload Mods to apply the change.
A download alone does not necessarily mean that a mod is active. The Manage Mods screen is where you confirm the enabled state, and Reload Mods applies the changed configuration without requiring you to guess whether the client noticed it.
How to choose a safe first mod setup
Add changes gradually
Install a single mod, reload, and confirm that the title screen and a test world behave normally before adding another. This is a troubleshooting strategy, not a published limit on the number of mods: the project does not establish a universal mod-count ceiling in the material available for this guide.
Check dependencies first
Some mods rely on other packages. A dependency warning can explain why a mod will not enable or why a load fails. Read the listing before enabling anything, and install required dependencies in the order the listing specifies.
Compare maintenance and compatibility signals
When deciding between otherwise similar listings, compare their recent update activity, stated compatibility, dependency requirements, and whether the same setup is practical for multiplayer. Popularity can help you discover projects, but it does not by itself prove compatibility with your current tModLoader version.
Do not assume a named mod is current
Mod availability, interface labels, version numbers, and compatibility can change. Check the current Workshop listing at the time you install, and read its description rather than relying on an old tutorial or a remembered version number.

Can you play modded Terraria with friends?
Yes, but every participant must run tModLoader. A vanilla Terraria client cannot join a tModLoader session. The project README states: “It is however required that all your friends also install TML if you want to play together; vanilla users can’t play with TML users.”
In practice, everyone should use the same mod set and compatible versions. Before hosting or joining, compare the enabled list on each computer. A missing dependency, an extra content mod, or a different mod version can prevent a shared world from loading or joining successfully.
A practical multiplayer checklist
- Each player owns Terraria and has installed the separate tModLoader entry.
- Each player launches tModLoader rather than vanilla Terraria.
- Everyone has the same required mods enabled.
- Everyone has compatible versions of those mods and their dependencies.
- Players reload after changing the enabled list, then restart the session if the client requests it.
Do not invite a friend through a vanilla session and expect the modded client to bridge the difference. The two environments are separate by design.
Back up worlds and characters before major changes
Copy your player and world saves before making substantial mod changes. A backup gives you a recoverable copy if a new mod, dependency change, or compatibility problem affects a save. The prudent procedure is to keep the copy outside the active save location and label it with the date or the mod change that prompted it.

Backups are protection, not a guarantee that every failure can be reversed. They also do not make incompatible mods compatible. Keep the original copy untouched while you test the changed setup, and only replace active files after you know which version you intend to keep.

Why a mod is not showing up
The mod was downloaded but is not enabled
Open Workshop → Manage Mods and check its state. Downloading a listing and enabling it are separate actions. Enable the mod, then choose Reload Mods.
The listing cannot be found
Use the search field and try browsing by category, alphabetical order, popularity, or recency. If a project was renamed, removed, or is unavailable for your current client version, an older guide may still describe a listing you cannot see. Check the current Workshop information rather than importing files from an unverified source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA dependency is missing
Return to the mod’s description and read its dependency list. Install the required packages, then revisit Manage Mods and reload. If the listing does not explain a dependency clearly, do not guess at replacement files; look for the maintainer’s compatibility notes in the current listing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a mod fails to load
Use the newest addition as the first suspect
If the game loaded before a recent change and fails afterward, disable the newest mod, reload, and test again. This isolates the change without requiring you to remove the entire setup at once.
Read the listing before changing anything else
Check the mod description, dependencies, compatibility notes, and stated version information. A mod may require another package, a particular client version, or a specific combination of enabled content. Apply the instructions in the listing, then reload and test.

Return to the last known-good setup
If disabling the newest addition restores loading, keep that working configuration and investigate the removed mod separately. Use your player and world backups if a save itself appears affected. Do not overwrite a clean backup with a failing test state.

Change one variable at a time
When several additions were made together, disable them as a group, reload, and then re-enable them individually or in small, documented steps. Recording which mod was enabled at each test makes the cause easier to identify than repeatedly changing an untracked list.
Keeping a tModLoader installation manageable
Separate vanilla and modded play
Use the correct Steam library entry for the session you intend to run. Keeping vanilla Terraria and tModLoader separate prevents an unmodded character or world session from being confused with a modded one and makes support steps easier to follow.
Document the working setup
For a multiplayer group, maintain a simple list of enabled mods, dependencies, and versions. Update it whenever someone changes the Workshop configuration. This is especially useful after a client or mod update, when interface labels and compatibility information may have changed.
Expect labels and availability to change
Workshop sorting options, mod listings, version numbers, and compatibility statements are not permanent. Recheck the current client and listing when following an older tutorial. The menu paths in this guide—Download Mods, Manage Mods, and Reload Mods—describe the documented workflow, but exact labels can change in future releases.
