NYT Connections Puzzle #575, published Monday, January 6, 2025, splits its 16 words into four groups of four. The hardest group is purple: ARS, BOOT, BUT and RUM are rear-end synonyms with their last letter removed. The sections below go from hints only, to the full grid, to a group-by-group explanation, so you can stop at whichever level of help you need.

Stage 1: Hints only

Read these one at a time. Each names the idea behind a color group without giving away its words.

  1. Yellow: “Heavy Breathing”
  2. Green: “Umbrella Terms”
  3. Blue: “Easy as”
  4. Purple: “Rear Synonyms”

These are clue phrases, not the official category labels. If the yellow hint is enough to find four words, go with it and leave the rest of the grid for later.

Stage 2: The full answer grid

Stop here if you only want the answers. Each group is listed with its category name and its four words.

Color Category Words
Yellow BREATHE HARD GASP, HEAVE, PANT, PUFF
Green CATCHALL BLANKET, BROAD, GENERAL, UMBRELLA
Blue METAPHORS FOR EASY THINGS ABC, BREEZE, PICNIC, PIE
Purple SYNONYMS FOR REAR END MINUS LAST LETTER ARS, BOOT, BUT, RUM

The 16 words, alphabetically, are: ABC, ARS, BLANKET, BOOT, BREEZE, BROAD, BUT, GASP, GENERAL, HEAVE, PANT, PICNIC, PIE, PUFF, RUM, UMBRELLA.

Why each group works

Yellow: BREATHE HARD

GASP, HEAVE, PANT and PUFF all describe breathing that is heavy, labored or forceful. This is the most direct group on the board, which is why it is the yellow, easiest-tier set. Watch for words that look like breathing but are not, such as a word that means breathing out quickly without the effort implied here.

Green: CATCHALL

BLANKET, BROAD, GENERAL and UMBRELLA each describe something that covers or includes a wide range of things. A blanket statement, a broad category, a general rule and an umbrella term all do the same job. The trap is that UMBRELLA and BLANKET are physical objects too, so the category is about meaning, not about what the word looks like.

Blue: METAPHORS FOR EASY THINGS

Each blue word completes a phrase meaning something is simple. “As easy as ABC,” “a breeze,” “a picnic,” and “easy as pie” (or “a piece of cake”) are all common idioms. The group is built on idiom recognition rather than a shared dictionary meaning, so the words only connect once you finish the phrase in your head.

Purple: SYNONYMS FOR REAR END MINUS LAST LETTER

This is the wordplay group. Each answer is a slang or common word for the rear end with its final letter dropped:

  • ARSE becomes ARS
  • BOOTY becomes BOOT
  • BUTT becomes BUT
  • RUMP becomes RUM

Because the four words are fragments, they can look unrelated until you test them against a rear-end word. Solving the purple group last is the usual approach, since its words overlap with other categories (BUT and RUM are ordinary words, and BOOT is a common noun).

Solving order and mistakes

Connections allows four mistakes per puzzle, and the color groups run from easier yellow to trickier purple. A reliable order for this board:

  • Start with yellow, since GASP, HEAVE, PANT and PUFF have few alternative meanings on the board.
  • Move to green next, and treat BLANKET and UMBRELLA as meaning-based matches rather than objects.
  • Take blue after green. ABC, BREEZE, PICNIC and PIE are only linked once you finish the idiom.
  • Leave purple for the end, when the remaining four words are the fragments.

If you guess a group that does not fit, check whether one of its words belongs to a different category before you spend another attempt.
