How Connections works
The New York Times Help Center describes Connections as a game in which players receive 16 words and find four groups of four that share a connection. The groups are color-coded yellow, green, blue, and purple: yellow is easiest, while purple is the trickiest. The Help Center also notes that there is one solution and that some words may appear to fit more than one category. Read the official Connections help page.
NYT says editors curate words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary. The same Help Center page explains the curation.
