Connections #356 answers for June 1, 2024
The 16 words in puzzle #356 were PRESS, LOCK, HURRY, WAVE, PANE, FLY, CURRENT, CURL, NOW, ROW, STAT, MARKS, DRIFT, PRONTO, RUSTLE and TIDE. Here are the four groups:
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | DON’T DELAY! | HURRY, NOW, PRONTO, STAT |
| Green | OCEAN PHENOMENA | CURRENT, DRIFT, TIDE, WAVE |
| Blue | DUMBBELL EXERCISES | CURL, FLY, PRESS, ROW |
| Purple | PHILOSOPHER HOMOPHONES | LOCK, MARKS, PANE, RUSTLE |
Why the purple words fit
The four words sound like the surnames Locke, Marx, Paine and Russell: John Locke, Karl Marx, Thomas Paine and Bertrand Russell. They are sound-alikes, not the philosophers’ names spelled correctly.

How Connections works
Connections gives players 16 words and asks them to sort them into four groups of four that share a theme. Each group has a color: yellow is the easiest and purple the trickiest. Words may seem to fit more than one category, which is part of the challenge. See the New York Times Help Center’s Connections guide for the game’s mechanics.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How difficult was #356?
TechRadar writer Marc McLaren rated #356 difficult and reported two mistakes in his own solve. That is his personal experience, not a measure of how other players performed. He singled out the philosopher homophones as particularly hard to spot, while noting that some words could plausibly distract solvers toward other groups. Read his #356 coverage.
