Connections #927 answers

The sixteen words are SINGE, MUNCH, PAPER, POLLOCK, BACON, CHAMP, CHAR, WHISTLER, BITE, TANG, RAPT, CHEESE, HUMP, BREAD, SOLE, and CHEW.

Color Category Words
Yellow Slang for money BACON, BREAD, CHEESE, PAPER
Green Masticate BITE, CHAMP, CHEW, MUNCH
Blue Fish CHAR, POLLOCK, SOLE, TANG
Purple Ways to vocalize musically plus a letter HUMP, RAPT, SINGE, WHISTLER

Why the purple group fits

Each tile resembles a musical vocalization with an extra letter: HUMP evokes HUM, RAPT evokes RAP, SINGE evokes SING, and WHISTLER evokes WHISTLE. The extra letter is part of the wordplay, rather than a separate category clue.
