Tokyo Game Show 2024 grew on nearly every count GamesBeat tracked. Dean Takahashi’s report put preliminary attendance at 274,739 visitors, with 985 companies, 3,252 booths, 44 countries and 2,850 displayed titles. The attendance figure is preliminary, not a final organizer total, and the platform and genre counts describe titles on show rather than sales or player demand.

Show size compared with 2023

The clearest numbers in GamesBeat’s report by Dean Takahashi, published September 28, 2024 and updated June 17, 2025, compare the 2024 event with the 2023 show on the same measures.

Measure TGS 2024 TGS 2023 Change
Visitors (2024 figure is preliminary) 274,739 243,238 +31,501 (+12.9% as reported)
Companies 985 787 +198
Booths 3,252 2,682 +570
Countries 44 44 No change
Displayed titles 2,850 2,291 +559

The 12.9% growth figure is GamesBeat’s calculation from the two attendance numbers it reported. The 2024 count was described as an organizers’ preliminary count; the article does not supply a final attendance release.

How to read the attendance number

The initial estimate was not the count

Takahashi writes that he attended his first Tokyo Game Show after 27 years covering games. He initially expected roughly 200,000 visitors. He later updated the report with the preliminary organizers’ figure of 274,739. Treat 200,000 as his pre-show expectation, not as a reported result.

What “preliminary” means here

GamesBeat labels the 274,739 figure as preliminary and does not report a confirmed final tally. If you need a settled total, check for a final report from the Tokyo Game Show organizers; this article does not provide one.

Platforms on the show floor

GamesBeat counted the titles on display for each platform. The table below sets the 2024 counts beside the 2023 counts the article lists.

Nintendo titles without a Nintendo booth

The article says Nintendo was not at the show, yet it counts 295 Nintendo Switch titles. A platform’s title count on the show list does not mean the platform holder exhibited.

VR titles declined in the count

GamesBeat lists three PSVR2 titles in 2024 against 12 in 2023, six Valve Index titles against 19, 32 Meta Quest 2 titles against 27, and six HTC Vive titles against 19. Takahashi reads this as VR losing ground relative to other platforms. That is his impression from one show’s title list; the article does not provide market share, sales or usage data, so it cannot show VR’s overall trajectory.

Industry voices from the show

Takahashi’s report mixes event data with interviews and his own observations. The following points are attributed views, not measured trends.

  • Hiring: SNK CEO Kenji Matsubara discussed Japanese companies’ comparatively conservative hiring during the pandemic.
  • Market mood: Virtuos CEO Gilles Langourieux told GamesBeat he felt the gaming market was improving.
  • Future computing: In a keynote, Ken Kutaragi forecast that a coming era of “real-time computing” built on AI-infused media could be 100 times bigger than today’s game industry. This is a forecast, not a measured statistic.
  • Black Myth: Wukong: GamesBeat states that the game sold 20 million copies in its first month. The figure is GamesBeat’s reporting; this article did not check it against a publisher source.
  • Chinese-developed games: The report notes their increasing visibility on the show floor.

Takahashi’s own summary is the line, “On almost every measure, the numbers are up.” It is his assessment of the show, and it sits alongside the preliminary attendance caveat in the same report.

Using these numbers

  • Attendance, companies, booths, countries and titles are event counts from one show. They are not a sales or revenue measure.
  • Platform and genre tables count titles on display. A higher count can reflect exhibitor choices as much as demand.
  • Where the article gives an opinion, such as the view of the VR market or the state of the industry, read it as the reporter’s or interviewee’s view.

For a year-on-year comparison, use the same categories for both years, as the tables above do.
