It is a weaker fit if the story is your priority or if repeated activities wear you down. Critics gave the original release a favorable reception, while player ratings are more divided. This guide summarizes published critic and player scores and official store listings. It does not report hands-on testing.
What the review scores actually measure
The Division 2 has several scores in circulation, and they describe different things. Treating them as one number leads to a misleading picture, so the table below separates them by source, audience, and date.
| Source | What it measures | Reported figure | Date and scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metacritic, PS4 critic page | Critic aggregate | 82 Metascore, “Generally Favorable,” from 63 critic reviews; 88% positive, 11% mixed, 2% negative | Original 2019 PS4 reviews; not a new 2026 assessment |
| Metacritic, PS4 user page | Player ratings | 6.3 user score; 54% positive, 17% mixed, 29% negative | Accessed 2026; PS4 only; user ratings, not critic reviews |
| Steam, store search result | Player reviews on PC | 79% positive among English reviews, from 17,598 reviews | Accessed 2026; counts and ratios change over time; a PC-specific sample |
The Metacritic critic and user pages are for PlayStation 4, and the Steam figure comes from PC players. These groups overlap but are not the same population, so the numbers should be read side by side rather than averaged.
What critics praised and criticized
The clearest critical consensus concerns the moment-to-moment design. Cover-based combat, mission structure, loot rewards, and build tuning are the elements reviewers return to most often. The detailed Washington, D.C. setting and the amount of exploration also earned credit.

#1 Best Overall
- Tom Clancy's The Division 2 is an online action shooter RPG experience, where exploration and player progression are essential
- Save a country on the brink of collapse as you explore an open, dynamic, and hostile world in Washington, DC
- Fight together with your friends in online co-op or against others in competitive P2P
- Choose a unique class specialization to take on the toughest challenges with friends in a genre defining endgame
- Want more? Upgrade to the Gold Edition, featuring a Year 1 Pass with additional digital content and three day early access to the game
The weakest point in most reviews is the story. TIME’s 2019 review put the balance this way:
“Neither gameplay nor storytelling is particularly unique in The Division 2, but what’s been executed is a snappy, open-world game that’s satisfying to grind.”

- 30 vehicles official manufacturer, in 3 categories, UTV, ATV, Rock Bouncer
- 5 types of racing, off-road sprint, off-road track, mountain climbing, obstacle course, closed circuit
- Official manufacturers, equipment and sponsors
- A comprehensive career mode with team and calendar management
- Online races for up to 8 players
That sentence captures the pattern across the favorable reviews. The game is rarely called narratively original. It is more often praised for how well its systems hold together once you are playing them.
What players report
Player reviews point to the same strengths and weaknesses, but with more emphasis on the grind. Recent user reviews on Metacritic praise gear variety and endgame longevity. Others criticize repetitive progression, the story, and how easy it is for newcomers to get oriented.

These are recurring themes, not a survey. Forum threads such as this r/thedivision question about whether the game is still worth getting show the same split between players who enjoy the loop and players who have tired of it. Individual posts are anecdotes and should be weighted accordingly.
Is the live game still active?
Ubisoft’s FY2025–26 third-quarter update, published in its investor report, states: “Tom Clancy’s The Division® 2 continued to grow meaningfully YoY across active players, engagement and revenue.” Ubisoft attributed this to live events and a new season launched in December.

That statement shows year-over-year growth in direction, not size. Ubisoft did not publish an absolute player count, so it does not tell you how many people are playing or how well matchmaking performs at a given hour. It is a publisher’s own characterization of its results.
Battle for Brooklyn and the expansion lineup
Battle for Brooklyn launched on May 27, 2025. Its Metacritic page shows two critic reviews, one positive and one mixed, and a 6.0 user score based on five ratings. That sample is too small to support a firm aggregate conclusion. The displayed reviews call it a solid return opportunity, with a new region and story, while noting that it adds relatively few new mechanics.

Ubisoft’s US store catalog lists the Standard Edition along with downloadable content including Warlords of New York and Battle for Brooklyn. It also lists Echoes of Central Park with a November 3, 2026 release date as of October 8, 2026. Store contents, prices, and bundles change, so confirm them on the store page before you buy.

The store listings identify both single-player and online co-op, and Steam also lists online PvP. A feature listing confirms that a mode exists. It does not confirm how well matchmaking or population will work for you, so check recent player activity before planning around a co-op group.
The right choice depends on what you want from the game:
- Choose the base game plus expansions if you want the full loot-driven progression and enjoy long-term gear chasing.
- Be cautious about the endgame if you dislike repeating activities to refine builds, since that loop is central to the experience.
- Be cautious about story expectations if narrative originality is your main reason for playing. Reviews consistently rank the combat and activity design above the writing.
- Consider Battle for Brooklyn separately if you already like the base game. Compare its price and new story against the limited number of new mechanics reviewers mention.
- Returning players who already understand the systems will get more from newer content than first-time players will.
How to check the current edition before buying
- Open the Ubisoft Store US catalog page for The Division 2.
- Confirm which edition includes the expansions you want, and which are sold separately.
- Check the release date for Echoes of Central Park before paying for it in advance.
- Look up the current price and any active discount, since listed prices are not fixed.
- On Steam or Metacritic, read the most recent player reviews to see whether complaints match your priorities.
Most players who enjoy cover shooters and gear tuning will find the game rewarding. Players who want strong storytelling or who dislike repetitive progression will likely be disappointed, and the scores above reflect that split.
