Tomb Raider I–III Remastered Starring Lara Croft is a preservation-focused restoration, not a remake. It keeps the Core Design trilogy’s original levels, jumps, secrets, enemies and puzzles, then adds optional modern lighting, rebuilt models, camera-relative controls and presentation tools. You can switch between the remastered and classic visual styles, and between modern and tank controls, while playing.
The collection is therefore two experiences in one package: a more accessible way to play the 1996–1998 adventures on current consoles, and a deliberately faithful version for people who want the original movement, visuals and challenge. The important changes are in presentation, input and convenience—not in the authored game content.

What the remaster actually contains
The package brings together the complete original trilogy and its substantial add-on campaigns. The three entries remain separate games with their own saves and progression.

| Tomb Raider III | The Lost Artifact | 1998 |
That means the advertised package is more than the three main campaigns. Each expansion adds levels and story material associated with its parent game, and the collection also includes the secret-level content described in the official PlayStation listing. If you previously owned only the base games, the expansions are a major part of what you are getting here.

The PlayStation listing records a February 14, 2024 release for PS4 and PS5. It showed $29.99 when accessed, but prices, bundles and stock vary by platform and retailer, so treat that figure as a dated listing snapshot rather than a permanent price.
Visual presentation: a new layer over the old geometry
Remastered mode
Remastered mode adds baked and real-time lighting effects to scenes that originally relied on stark, low-resolution polygonal shading. Lara, environments and enemies receive newly created models, while textures, animations and other visual effects are adjusted for contemporary displays. Health-kit and ammunition pickups are represented as three-dimensional models instead of the flat 2D sprites used in the original releases.
These changes improve readability in many rooms without replacing the underlying maps. A hallway, switch, ledge or enemy encounter is still positioned according to the original level data. The remaster is changing how those spaces are rendered, not redesigning their routes.

The original polygon look remains available at any time. A graphics toggle works during normal play and in Photo Mode, so you can make an immediate classic-versus-modern comparison without returning to a menu or restarting a level. The classic option is the practical answer for players asking whether they can see the PS1-era presentation: you can switch back to the collection’s recreation of that original visual style whenever you want.
Because the two modes can be changed in place, the difference is useful beyond nostalgia. If a modern light or texture makes a landmark easier to read, you can check the classic view to confirm that you are looking at the same geometry. Conversely, the classic view can clarify whether a visual impression comes from the new rendering rather than from an altered puzzle or object placement.

What the graphics toggle does not do
It does not provide a redesigned level set, a new art direction for the story or a separate modern campaign. The toggle is a rendering and presentation choice applied to the same authored adventures. There are no published controlled benchmarks in the available official material for frame rate, image quality, input latency or completion time on original hardware versus the remaster, so those comparisons should not be presented as measured facts.
Controls and camera: tank handling is still an option
Original tank controls
The original tank-style scheme remains selectable. Lara’s directional inputs are tied to her facing, so turning and lining up a jump are deliberate actions rather than instant camera-relative movement. This is the handling that established the trilogy’s characteristic rhythm: stop, rotate, judge the distance and commit to the jump.
Players returning from the 1990s may prefer tank controls because they preserve familiar timing and make the original traversal logic feel consistent. They also avoid learning a new relationship between the camera and Lara in levels whose jumps were authored around the old scheme.
Modern controls
The modern option takes inspiration from the control systems used in the later Legend, Anniversary and Underworld era. The right stick controls the camera, and Lara moves in the direction relative to that camera. Turning, sprinting, aligning with a ledge and aiming at an enemy therefore depend on where you are looking, not just on Lara’s current facing.
That can make general exploration and combat feel more immediate, especially for someone accustomed to contemporary third-person games. It also changes the way you approach the classic jumps. A player who switches from tank to modern controls should allow time to relearn spacing and alignment rather than assuming that every jump will translate one-for-one.

Combat and camera implications
Camera-relative movement affects more than walking speed. During a jump, the camera direction helps determine Lara’s lateral movement; during a fight, it changes how you turn, keep an enemy in view and choose a firing direction. The remaster’s later patches specifically improved modern-control combat, aiming, turning and sprinting, but the two schemes remain meaningfully different rather than cosmetic presets.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You can choose the scheme that suits a particular playthrough instead of treating one as a forced replacement. A first-time player may begin with modern controls for familiar camera behavior, while a returning player can select tank controls to preserve the original challenge. Switching is also a useful troubleshooting step if a jump or firefight feels harder because of input expectations rather than because the level itself has changed.
Gameplay additions and quality-of-life features
Boss health bars
The remaster adds a health bar to boss encounters. It gives you clearer feedback about how much damage a boss has taken and helps inform weapon choices when ammunition is limited. Update 4 added a setting to toggle boss health bars, so players who want less information on screen can disable them without losing the rest of the remaster’s improvements.
Photo Mode
Photo Mode can freeze gameplay and lets you pose Lara, change her weapon and alter her outfit. It also exposes the two graphics modes, allowing a paused scene to be viewed in either the remastered or classic presentation. This is a presentation tool rather than a new gameplay system: it does not alter level logic, enemy behavior or puzzle solutions.
Outfit selector
Aspyr Update 3, released June 5, 2024, added an outfit selector that unlocks after you complete each individual game. Once unlocked, it allows outfits from all three adventures to be selected. The unlock condition matters: the selector is not simply an option available from the first boot, and completing one game is what opens the broader wardrobe.

Post-launch updates that affect the comparison
The collection’s behavior has changed through patches, so a launch-day description is incomplete. The following timeline identifies the documented additions and fixes that matter when you compare it with the original releases.
| Update | Date | Changes relevant to play |
|---|---|---|
| Update 3 | June 5, 2024 | Added the post-completion outfit selector; improved modern-control combat, Lara’s model, water-caustic effects and fire effects; added controller quick-save and reload hotkeys. |
| Update 4 | November 4, 2024 | Further improved modern-control aiming, turning and sprinting; fixed FMV stuttering and several visual-effects problems; added the boss-health-bar toggle. |
These updates are conveniences and corrections layered onto the same trilogy. They do not turn the collection into a redesigned edition with new levels or rewritten puzzles.
Is Tomb Raider I–III Remastered a remake?
No. Aspyr’s stated approach was to use the original source code and engine. Chris Bashaar, Aspyr’s Director of Product, said, “At the outset, we knew we would use the original source code and engine.” He also described the team’s belief that the gameplay of the three games is timeless.
That technical choice explains the boundary between what changed and what did not. The authored encounters, traversal and puzzle logic remain the reference experience. New lighting, models, controls, photo tools and interface feedback can change how the game feels to operate, but they do not replace the original design with new routes or solutions.
Bashaar also described the ability to return to the original look and feel as a critical feature. In practical terms, the collection is best understood as a restoration with optional overlays. Calling it a remake would imply rebuilt stages or substantially rewritten gameplay that the documented feature set does not support.

How to choose your setup
For a historically faithful replay
- Select the classic visual style before starting and keep tank controls enabled.
- Leave boss health bars off if you want fewer modern interface cues; Update 4 provides that toggle.
- Use the classic view during a difficult puzzle or jump to compare the scene with the presentation you remember.
For a first playthrough on a modern controller
- Start with modern controls if camera-relative movement is familiar to you.
- Spend the opening levels learning how the right stick changes Lara’s direction before attempting long jumps at speed.
- If combat or ledge alignment feels unpredictable, switch to tank controls and reassess; the level has not been redesigned, but the input model has changed.
- Keep boss health bars enabled until you are comfortable with weapon selection, then disable them if you prefer a cleaner screen.
For comparing old and new presentation
- Enter a representative room or outdoor area and activate the graphics toggle during play.
- Check the same landmark, pickup and enemy in both modes rather than judging from a trailer or screenshot.
- Use Photo Mode to freeze the scene, pose Lara and change her outfit or weapon while switching views.
Compatibility, editions and what to check before buying
The documented console listing covers PS4 and PS5. Before purchasing, confirm the platform-specific edition, the current price and whether the version you want is in stock; the $29.99 figure associated with the accessed PlayStation listing is not a guaranteed current price.
Physical editions were announced by the official Tomb Raider site, including a Limited Run Games Collector’s Edition featuring Lara’s dual pistols. Availability of a physical or collector’s package can change, so check the current seller listing rather than assuming every edition remains orderable.
A compatible game controller is the relevant accessory consideration for someone choosing modern controls. The collection’s comparison value does not depend on buying a special controller, but a pad with two analog sticks is the natural fit for right-stick camera control.
Who benefits most from the remaster?
Players who never finished the trilogy
The package is the most convenient way to approach the three campaigns and their expansions without giving up the original level design. Modern controls, updated rendering and boss feedback reduce some entry barriers, while the classic options remain available when you want the older feel.
Returning players who want authenticity
Tank controls and the classic visual style let you reproduce the defining handling and look. The ability to toggle views in the middle of a level also makes it easy to appreciate how much of the remembered experience comes from the geometry and how much comes from the original rendering.
Owners of the original games
The purchase case is strongest if you value current-console convenience, the included expansions, optional modern controls, Photo Mode and the visual toggle. It is weaker if your existing setup already provides the exact controls and presentation you want and you do not need the added campaigns or quality-of-life tools. There is no redesigned campaign to justify the purchase as a wholly new adventure.
Known boundaries and fair expectations
- The remaster preserves original gameplay rather than correcting every design convention of the 1990s. Deliberate jumps, exploration and resource decisions remain part of the experience.
- Modern controls are optional, not a universal modernization of every interaction. Their camera-relative behavior can require relearning levels built around tank movement.
- Visual improvements are documented feature changes, not proof of a specific frame-rate or latency advantage. Official material does not provide controlled hardware-to-hardware benchmarks.
- Patch notes describe improvements to modern aiming, turning, sprinting, combat, effects, FMV playback and controller shortcuts, but they do not claim that every original quirk has been removed.
Verdict
Tomb Raider I–III Remastered changes the way the trilogy is displayed and controlled while deliberately leaving its authored adventures intact. The decisive additions are optional modern rendering, camera-relative controls, Photo Mode, clearer boss feedback, cross-game outfit selection and the inclusion of all three expansion campaigns. If you want a faithful replay, select classic visuals and tank controls; if you want a more approachable current-console playthrough, use modern controls and the remastered presentation. For owners of the originals, the value lies in that flexibility and in the complete expansion package—not in a remake that rewrites the games.
