Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is a reimagining of Lara Croft’s 1996 debut, not a graphics-only remaster. The announced changes include expanded level spaces, redesigned puzzles, new traversal and combat features, and deeper story connections. It is scheduled for February 12, 2027, and remains unreleased as of October 7, 2026, so these are announced features and limited preview details—not a final-game assessment.
Is Legacy of Atlantis a remake or a reimagining?
Crystal Dynamics describes Legacy of Atlantis as a “reimagining”: the team intends to preserve recognizable story and gameplay touchpoints while adapting parts of the adventure for a modern audience. Game Director Will Kerslake told Xbox Wire that the goal is not simply to make the same game look better.
That distinction matters when comparing it with the original. Some familiar elements are returning in altered form, but the available announcements do not establish that every level, puzzle, enemy, or story beat from 1996 will be retained. Tomb Raider: Anniversary (2007) was an earlier remake of the original, as Xbox Wire notes; that does not make Legacy of Atlantis a like-for-like remake.
How are the environments and levels changing?
The clearest announced level redesign is the Lost Valley in Peru. The original’s rooms could be self-contained; the publisher says those spaces have become semi-connected environments that can be approached from new angles. The change is about level structure as well as appearance: the spaces are being opened up so routes and encounters can connect differently.

In its June 2, 2026 announcement, the publisher says the environments have been expanded. Xbox Wire’s author, who played a brief demo of early Peru levels, also described the Lost Valley as more organic and detailed. That preview covers only a limited portion of the game, not every level.
Are the puzzles different?
Yes, at least in the announced Peru content. The publisher says those puzzles were rebuilt from the ground up, including a reimagining of the Lost Valley cog puzzle. PlayStation’s official feature listing names water-flow manipulation, redirected light beams, pressure plates, and symbols among the puzzle mechanics.

What new traversal and combat features are announced?
Traversal
PlayStation’s feature list names a grappling hook, climbing, leaping, and swinging. These are advertised abilities for the new game; the available sources do not provide a complete account of the original’s moveset or a control-by-control comparison.

Combat and the T-Rex encounter
The official listing includes dual pistols, unlockable weapons, and acrobatic attacks. In the Xbox Wire interview, Art Director Arek Tomaszewski characterized the original T-Rex fight as a simple matter of shooting and running. He discussed a more cinematic expanded encounter for Legacy of Atlantis, including feathered dinosaurs and a Focus meter that enables bullet-time acrobatics. That description is a developer preview detail, not evidence that every fight uses bullet time.
Does the story change?
The new game revisits the first-adventure premise involving the Scion. PlayStation says the classic story has been expanded with deeper connections linking Lara’s defining adventure to her future. The official synopsis follows the Scion through Peru, Greece, Egypt, and a Mediterranean island.

The announcements do not enumerate all additions or confirm that every original plot beat remains unchanged. It is safest to expect a recognizable starting point with story material adapted or added, rather than assume a scene-for-scene retelling.

The game is built with Unreal Engine 5, according to the publisher’s announcement. In the Xbox Wire interview, the developers describe a visual approach that retains realism while increasing vibrance, saturation, scale, and drama. The Xbox Wire writer contrasted that direction with the darker, more grounded tone of the Survivor trilogy.

Who voices Lara, and when does the game release?
Amazon’s announcement names Alix Wilton Regan as Lara’s voice in the new games. Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled for February 12, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2, according to the publisher’s announcement. The PlayStation page lists the same date. Dates and platform plans can change before launch.
What is not known yet?
No available source provides a comprehensive level-by-level comparison with the 1996 game. The Lost Valley preview and the specific announced mechanics establish examples of redesign, not the fate of every original feature. Because the game remains unreleased, there is not yet a basis here for a final verdict on its quality, difficulty, playtime, or performance.
