Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream launched on April 16, 2026, for Nintendo Switch and is also playable on Nintendo Switch 2. Announced in March 2025 as the first new entry in the series in more than ten years, the sequel returns to its Mii-filled island life with more customization, player-created content, and room for residents to move around.

When did the new Tomodachi Life come out?

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream launched on April 16, 2026. Nintendo first announced it in March 2025, describing it as the series’ first new entry in more than ten years. Nintendo confirmed the launch date in its January 2026 feature announcement; its original March 2025 announcement introduced the game as coming in 2026.

Is Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream on Switch 2?

Yes. It is a Nintendo Switch game and can also be played on Nintendo Switch 2; it is not a Switch 2 exclusive. Nintendo’s launch announcement identifies it as a Switch title, and Nintendo’s May 2026 investor materials report that about 40% of players were Nintendo Switch 2 owners.

What do you do in the new Tomodachi Life?

You create Mii residents based on yourself, people you know, or characters you imagine, then watch their lives unfold on an island. You can adjust their personalities and quirks, customize their living spaces, and respond when they share thoughts or have problems. Nintendo says the game’s time advances in step with the real world.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
  • Populate your island with Mii characters and watch them come to life
  • Base your Mii characters on family and friends, or whatever you want—and customizer, including some face customization options you haven’t seen before
  • Pick your Mii characters up and place them near each other to chat and hang out
  • Help your Mii characters explore likes and dislikes, find relationships, and get up to all sorts of fun
  • Give Mii characters clothes, food, items, and life advice as they deal with all kinds of situations

The sequel adds new Mii customization parts, island building, player-created items, and the ability to pick up and move Miis. Its focus remains the unpredictable social life of the residents, rather than a conventional story campaign.

What’s different from the 3DS game?

The developers describe the sequel as a change in what players can do with the island, not simply a bigger collection of items. Director Ryutaro Takahashi said the team began discussing a new game around 2017, after work on Miitomo had settled down and the creators felt they had reached the limits of what they could add to the 3DS title.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
  • After over ten years, Tomodachi Life is back! Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream comes to Nintendo Switch on the 16th of April 2026.
  • On a small island floating in the sea, Mii characters live their own carefree lives. You're in charge of this island, so create anyone you’d like to live here as Mii characters, like ones based on friends, family and even yourself.
  • Then, choose their personality, voice, and help your Mii characters enjoy their island life however they see fit. You can see what’s on their minds, help them solve problems, watch them interact, cultivate their friendships and more.

In Nintendo’s interview, Takahashi said the team wanted player-created content because the series works especially well as an “inside joke” shared by people who know one another. Switch hardware also let the developers create a larger active space where more Miis could move freely. These are the developers’ explanations of the design direction, rather than an independent feature-by-feature assessment.

“There’s so much that I want my Mii characters to experience, but there’s nothing more that I can do for them”

Takahashi also described the series’ appeal this way: “The concept of Tomodachi Life is to be ‘the ultimate inside joke game’ that can be enjoyed among people who are close to each other or share things in common.” Both quotations are from Nintendo’s interview with the development team, which notes that it was translated from Japanese.

Can you import Miis from other games?

No. Nintendo Support says you can create residents using faces of Miis registered on your Switch or Switch 2 console, but you cannot directly import Miis from software such as Miitopia. Miis created in Living the Dream also cannot be transferred back to the console or into other games. See Nintendo’s Mii and game-data FAQ.

What character and sharing options are available?

Nintendo Support says Mii gender choices are Male, Female, and Non-Binary. Dating preferences use the same three choices, which can be combined or left unset. Nintendo says gender selection does not change the game system or story content.

You can share screenshots and videos subject to Nintendo’s content guidelines and the platform’s rules, but some capture features are unavailable for this game. Nintendo lists transferring captures to smartphones, direct social posting, and automatic upload to the Nintendo Switch App on Switch 2 among the unavailable functions. The restrictions and character-creation details are in Nintendo’s support FAQ.

How has the sequel performed?

Nintendo Co., Ltd. reported more than 3.8 million units in global cumulative sell-through during the first two weeks after release. That is an early, two-week figure—not lifetime sales. In the same May 8, 2026 investor materials, Nintendo said approximately 40% of players were Nintendo Switch 2 owners.

What is the latest update?

Nintendo Support’s update listing gives version 1.0.4, dated July 22, 2026, as its latest listed update. Among other fixes, it addresses a rare save-data corruption issue after using Island Builder and a progression issue that could close the game after resolving a Mii’s concern. Nintendo described the save-data issue as rare; these notes do not mean the problems affected every player. Check the official update page for the current version and full notes.
