If you have Steam Points sitting unused, you can put them toward profile customization, chat items, profile showcases, Seasonal Badge levels, or Community Awards. These are Steam-native digital features—not cash or a general-purpose shopping balance—and Steam does not rank them from best to worst. Choose based on which parts of Steam you actually use.
1. Customize your Steam profile
Spend points on profile items that fit the games and style you want to show off. Steam’s Points Shop has included avatars, profile backgrounds, frames, and emoticons; the live catalog and each item’s availability can change. Check the current shop for the displayed cost before deciding.

Steam’s Points Shop explainer describes these kinds of profile items. A background or avatar can make sense if you regularly update your profile, while a frame is a more specific visual accent.
2. Get stickers and emoticons for chat
If you use Steam chat often, stickers and emoticons can be a more practical choice than an item you will only see on your profile. Steam lists both as points purchases for use in conversations. Browse the live catalog before spending, since selection and prices may vary.

3. Unlock a profile showcase
Showcases let you display selected information or collections on your profile. Steam says points can unlock new profile showcases, but the available showcase options and their costs should be checked in the Points Shop rather than assumed from older lists.
This is a good fit if you enjoy curating your profile and have something you want visitors to notice. If you rarely open your profile page, chat items may get more use.

4. Level up the Seasonal Badge
Steam recommends spending points to level up the Seasonal Badge. Consider this if profile progression matters to you; check the current badge and event details in Steam before buying, because the applicable rules, timing, and point cost are not established as fixed across seasons.
5. Give a Community Award
A Community Award is a way to show appreciation for a contribution such as a review, guide, forum post, screenshot, artwork, or Workshop item. Each new award costs 500 points. Under Steam’s January 13, 2026 update, new awards do not transfer points to the recipient; pending transfers from earlier awards complete as normal. Steam’s announcement explains the change.

An award is a signal of appreciation, not a way to move points to another account or boost a post’s placement. Steam says the number or type of awards does not change where content appears in lists. An award may draw attention, but it does not directly reorder content.

For the first four choices, compare how often you use the relevant Steam surface with the item’s current availability and displayed price. Choose an award when recognition itself is the point; otherwise, put the balance toward something you will use on your own profile or in chat.

Do Steam Points expire?
Steam’s January 2022 explainer says Steam Points do not expire, so there is no need to spend merely to use up a balance. Because that policy statement is from an older explainer, check Steam’s current terms if the expiration policy is a deciding factor. The Steam-hosted explainer also describes earning points through purchases, but its older discussion of community awards should not be read as current: new awards no longer transfer points to recipients under the 2026 update.
