There is no objective best winter game. “Winter” can mean a frozen wilderness that tries to kill you, a city that must survive a long cold, a snowy fantasy country to wander, or simply a season to settle into with a cup of something warm. This list sorts ten games by the kind of winter they offer, so you can match the mood you want instead of chasing a single ranking.

The candidate pool comes from Nintendo’s winter-game feature dated 11 July 2024, which names all ten titles. Inclusion there is a selection, not a ranking, and it does not mean every game is set entirely in winter. Where a game uses snow as one part of a larger world, the entry says so.

At a glance

The table compares how central winter is to each game and what kind of experience it creates. Entries are grouped by mood in the sections that follow.

Game How winter shows up Mood Play style
The Long Dark Core survival system in a frozen wilderness Bleak, quiet, solitary Exploration survival
Frostpunk 2 Persistent winter drives city and society Tense, strategic City-building strategy
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Snowy northern setting within a large fantasy world Wondrous, adventurous Open-world role-playing
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Cold-weather regions within a broader fantasy world Dark, weary, atmospheric Action role-playing
Röki Forgotten northern world as the setting Mysterious, folkloric Adventure
Celeste Snowy mountain as the backdrop for a climb Determined, atmospheric Action-platforming
Wildfrost Frost-themed fantasy world Frosty, whimsical Strategy
Kona Isolated, snowbound setting Uneasy, mysterious Mystery adventure
Stardew Valley Winter as one of four seasons on a farm calendar Cozy, gentle Farming and life simulation
Animal Crossing: New Horizons Seasonal change in a life-simulation calendar Cozy, low-pressure Life simulation

The Long Dark

Hinterland Studio describes The Long Dark as “a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster.” The studio’s site describes a 50 square kilometre Northern Canadian wilderness, with dynamic time, weather, wildlife and resources shaping what you can do. Hinterland’s own page is the source for that scale figure; it is not an independent measurement.

Winter here is a system you manage rather than a backdrop. Warmth, food and shelter decide how long you last, and the game is built for a single player.

Frostpunk 2

Store descriptions from Xbox and the Epic Games Store place Frostpunk 2 in a post-apocalyptic snowy setting where winter persists and the population must survive it together. The pressure is collective: you govern a city, manage its factions and deal with the conflict that a long winter creates.

Hasbro® Don’t Break The Ice Game, Classic Version for Ages 3+ Years, 2-4 Players
  • FUN KIDS GAME: This Don’t Break the Ice game is an exciting preschool game that has players tapping out ice blocks one by one, as they imagine helping Phillip the Penguin make a new igloo
  • INDOOR GAME FOR AGES 3+: The object of this game for kids is to keep Phillip the Penguin on top of the ice, but as the game goes on, the ice blocks start falling. One wrong block and he'll go ker-plop.
  • FAMILY GAMES FOR KIDS: Get everyone together for family game night with the Don't Break the Ice game. Players will be on the edge of their seats just waiting for the moment that the penguin falls through
  • CHILDRENS GAMES MAKE GREAT GIFTS: If you're looking for family gifts or gifts for kids, board games are a great choice
  • HAVE FUN WITH CLASSIC GAMES: From classic tabletop board games to up-and-active toddler games, to party games, Hasbro Gaming is a one-stop-shop for filling your games closet

If The Long Dark asks whether you can survive alone in the cold, Frostpunk 2 asks whether a society can, which makes it the more demanding of the two for players who want strategic weight.

Winter as fantasy and folklore

These games use snow to give a world size, danger and a sense of myth. Winter is part of the atmosphere rather than the single challenge.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Skyrim’s northern landscape is snow-covered, and that is the main reason it appears on winter lists. The appeal is the sense of a large fantasy country to explore on foot or horseback, with long roads and mountain scenery. Winter is one dimension of a much larger open world, so it suits players who want to travel through cold landscapes rather than be defined by them.

Dead of Winter
  • A META-COOPERATIVE SURVIVAL EXPERIENCE: Step into a world where humanity teeters on the brink of extinction. Dead of Winter immerses players in a small colony of survivors facing flesh-craving monsters and the unforgiving winter cold.
  • PSYCHOLOGICAL SURVIVAL: Delve into a story-centric game. Survivors grapple with personal psychological imperatives. Collaboration is crucial to fend off external threats, resolve crises, scavenge for supplies, and maintain the colony's fragile morale.
  • STRATEGIC DECISIONS: Frequent challenging decisions require you to weigh the greater good of the colony against personal interests. The survival of the colony, the battle against the undead, and the dynamics among survivors all hang in the balance.
  • COOPERATION AMIDST CHAOS: While coping with their own psychological burdens, players must find ways to cooperate, defend against external dangers, and ensure the colony's survival. Trust is a rare commodity in a world gone mad.
  • UNIQUE CHARACTERS: Dozens of unique characters each have their own stories and motivations. Experience an emergent narrative. Navigate wildly-varying decisions, ensuring that no two games are alike. But beware, as a betrayer may lurk within your ranks.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3 is a darker, more weary kind of fantasy, and its cold-weather regions, including snowy mountain areas, are what makes it belong on this list. It is not a winter-set game throughout. Treat it as a fantasy journey that spends some of its time in harsh cold.

Röki

Nintendo describes Röki as a journey through a forgotten northern world of mystery and monsters. That framing makes it the folkloric option: the snow feels old and strange rather than merely cold, and the mood leans toward curiosity and unease.

Celeste

Celeste’s winter appeal is its mountain. The game is built around climbing a peak, and its snowy atmosphere gives each attempt a cold, lonely edge. The core experience is precise action-platforming, so the winter mood comes from the climb itself rather than from a seasonal system.

Wildfrost

Wildfrost is a frost-themed strategy game, and its frozen fantasy world is the reason it appears on winter lists. Its appeal is the whimsy of a frozen setting paired with tactical play, which makes it a lighter, more playful entry than the survival titles above.

Kona

Kona is a snowbound mystery. Its isolated setting and quiet investigation give it an uneasy, cold feel, and it is the best pick here if you want winter to carry suspense rather than hardship.

Winter as a seasonal reset

These two games treat winter as one part of a calendar. Snow is a mood and a rhythm, not a threat.

Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley runs on four seasons, and winter is the slower part of the farm year. The mood is gentle and cozy, and the season gives you a pause in planting-based routines. Winter does not dominate the game, but it gives the calendar a distinct character.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing: New Horizons changes with the seasons, and its winter brings a low-pressure, cozy atmosphere that fits a life-simulation rhythm. It is the most relaxed pick on the list, and the one that asks the least of you.

How to choose

  • If you want winter to be the main challenge, start with The Long Dark, then try Frostpunk 2 for a larger scale.
  • If you want to travel through snowy fantasy landscapes, choose Skyrim or The Witcher 3.
  • If you want a folkloric or mysterious northern mood, pick Röki or Kona.
  • If you want a short, focused experience with a wintry backdrop, try Celeste or Wildfrost.
  • If you want something cozy to play through a cold season, pick Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Before you buy

  • Check the current storefront page for each game’s platforms, edition and region. Availability varies, and the Nintendo feature is a selection source rather than a store listing.
  • Confirm the setting described on the official product page before you commit, especially for games where winter is only one part of the world.
  • Expect different time commitments. Survival and strategy titles ask for longer, more deliberate sessions than the seasonal life simulations.
