For osu!standard on a computer, “tablet” usually means a screenless graphics tablet: a USB pen surface that moves your cursor. The Wacom One by Wacom CTL-472 is the safest osu!-focused pick for most players; choose the XP-Pen Star G640 instead if it costs substantially less. A tablet is optional, though—mouse remains a perfectly viable choice, and no tablet guarantees better scores.
Quick comparison
| Rank | Model | Active area | Best for | Why consider it for osu! | Price signal | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Wacom One by Wacom CTL-472 | Small; exact dimensions not stated in the cited specialist guide | Most osu!standard players | The specialist guide rates it Highly Recommended (10/10) and lists no hardware smoothing. | About $30–$40 as a target in the specialist guide; not a guaranteed current price. | Small surface; availability and new or used pricing vary. |
| 2 | XP-Pen Star G640 | 6 × 4 inches | Budget buyers | Compact, battery-free pen, and XP-Pen explicitly markets it for osu!. | Current official price not stated. | Driver behavior and preference vary by operating system and user. |
| 3 | Huion Inspiroy H640P | 160 × 100 mm | Players who want shortcut keys or drawing use | Six programmable keys and a battery-free pen. | Current official price not stated. | Micro-USB, no tilt support listed; its extra features do not inherently improve aim. |
| 4 | XP-Pen Deco 01 V3 | 10 × 6.25 inches | Players who want a large surface | Large area, eight customizable keys, and battery-free pen. | Current official price not stated. | Needs more desk space and may require more arm movement. |
| 5 | Wacom Intuos Pro Medium | 8.7 × 5.8 inches, as reported by Just Creative | Artists who also play osu! | Professional drawing controls and build-oriented features. | About $379.95 in a dated Just Creative roundup; not a guaranteed current price. | Overkill if osu! is its only purpose. |
The product specifications and specialist evaluations are not all measured in the same way. In particular, report-rate figures from different manufacturers are not directly comparable. Price and availability can change by region, retailer, bundle, and condition.
1. Wacom CTL-472: best overall for osu!
The CTL-472 is the straightforward choice if osu!standard is your main reason for buying a tablet. Kuuube’s specialist tablet buying guide rates it Highly Recommended (10/10), lists no hardware smoothing, and gives a target price of about $30–$40. Those are the guide’s assessment and price target, not a promise about current listings.
Its simple, screenless setup and small footprint suit players who want a compact control surface rather than an art workstation. The main trade-off is the small active area: some players may prefer more physical room, though you can adjust the mapped area in software. The specialist guide also notes that pressing pen side buttons can occasionally cause input dropping or jumping. Disable those buttons if you notice that behavior.

Check the Wacom product page for current product and support details. Because the model is older, compare availability, condition, included pen, and price before choosing a new or used listing.
2. XP-Pen Star G640: best budget alternative
The Star G640 offers a 6 × 4-inch working area and a battery-free stylus. XP-Pen explicitly positions it for activities including osu!, making it a natural alternative when it is meaningfully cheaper than the CTL-472. See XP-Pen’s Star G640 page for product details.
XP-Pen lists 8,192 pressure levels, but that drawing specification is not evidence of lower latency or better osu! aim. Choose this model for its compact size, price, and your comfort with XP-Pen’s driver options—not because a pressure-level number is larger.
3. Huion Inspiroy H640P: best with shortcut keys
The H640P has a 160 × 100 mm active area, a battery-free PW100 pen, six programmable keys, and a listed report rate of 233 PPS. Huion lists Windows 7 or later, macOS 10.12 or later, Android 6.0 or later, and Linux compatibility on its product page. Confirm the current driver and operating-system support for your specific setup.

Its shortcut keys may be handy for drawing or general desktop use, but they do not make the cursor aim better by themselves. Huion lists 8,192 pressure levels and no tilt support; pressure sensitivity is chiefly relevant to drawing, not osu!standard. The Micro-USB connection is another practical consideration if you prefer newer cable connections.
4. XP-Pen Deco 01 V3: best large-area option
The Deco 01 V3’s active area is 10 × 6.25 inches, with eight customizable keys and a battery-free pen. XP-Pen lists a maximum report rate of 220 RPS, 16,384 pressure levels, and 60° tilt support. Its listed compatibility includes Windows 7 or later, Linux, macOS 10.13 or later, Android 10 or later, and Chrome OS 88 or later. Check XP-Pen’s specifications for the current details.
This is the option to consider if you actively want more surface area, use shortcut keys, or also draw. A larger tablet is not automatically better for osu!: it takes more desk space and can require more arm travel. Its pressure and tilt specifications are art features, not proof of an osu! performance advantage.
5. Wacom Intuos Pro Medium: best premium option for artists who also play
The Intuos Pro Medium makes sense when osu! is one use among serious digital-art work. Just Creative reported an 8.7 × 5.8-inch active area, 8,192 pressure sensitivity, customizable controls, Mac and Windows compatibility, and a price of about $379.95 when its roundup was captured. Treat that price as a dated third-party signal, not a current quote. Wacom’s product page has current product and support information.

Whether using a laptop, tablet, or desktop, the Deco 01 V3 provides a seamless experience, making it an ideal choice for those just starting their digital art journey
For osu! alone, the price is difficult to justify. Kuuube’s guide lists newer Wacom PTK-470/670/870 models at approximately $250/$380/$500 and rates them “Usually Not Recommended” for price/performance. Those guide figures and ratings apply to the models and assessment in that guide; they do not establish current street prices. Pay the Intuos Pro premium for drawing needs and professional controls, not an assumed osu! advantage.
How to choose a tablet for osu!
Prioritize cursor behavior over art specifications
For osu!, smooth, consistent cursor movement and reliable taps matter more than pressure sensitivity. Hardware smoothing or driver filtering can make movement feel less direct. A specialist guide rates the CTL-472 highly and lists no hardware smoothing, while also warning about occasional side-button-related input issues. Treat this as a specialist evaluation, not a guarantee that every unit or driver setup behaves identically.
Pressure sensitivity, tilt, and labels such as “professional accuracy” are primarily drawing considerations. Similarly, report rate is only one part of input behavior: manufacturers may measure it differently, and a larger published figure alone does not establish lower latency.
Pick an active area that suits your movement
Active area—not the tablet’s outside dimensions—is the surface mapped to cursor movement. A smaller mapped area moves the cursor farther for each millimeter of pen travel; a larger mapped area needs more physical movement. Neither is universally right, and you can usually change the mapping later.

- Working Area Configuration - HUION art tablet equips with a 10 x 6.25 inches working area, providing the user with the most comfortable size to work; the 10mm slim structure and minimalist design of appearance make the drawing tablet more attractive.
- Tilt Function Battery-free Stylus: This computer graphics tablet come with a battery-free stylus PW100, no need to charge, allowing for constant uninterrupted drawing. ±60° tilt support enables imitation of lines input with diverse drawing gestures, with accuracy ensured.
- Press Keys:12 programmable press keys plus 16 programmable soft keys, you can set shortcut keys on drawing tablet's driver based on your preferences, such as erase, zoom in/out, scroll up and down, and so on.
- Compatibility: HUION graphics tablet supports Windows 7 or later/ macOS 10.12 or later/ Android 6.0 or later/ Linux (Ubuntu). A USB adapter is required to connect to a Mac computer. H1060P supports various mainstream design and drawing software, including PS, SAI, AI, CDR, etc. (Please note: The H1060P is compatible with Ubuntu, but it requires the use of the Xorg display server. Wayland is not supported.)
- NOTE: You can easily connect your phone to the art tablet via the OTG connector; while iPhone and iPad are NOT at the moment. The cursor will not show up in the SAMSUNG Galaxy S series at present. If you are not sure whether the product is compatible with your Phone or any help, please contact us.
- Small, around 4 × 3 to 6 × 4 inches: a compact option for limited desk space, portability, or players who prefer short hand movements. It may feel cramped, and a full-screen mapping can make small hand motions translate into large cursor movements.
- Medium, around 8 × 5 to 10 × 6 inches: more room for players who prefer broader movement or also draw. It uses more desk space and does not inherently improve scores.
Start at a comfortable size and make gradual changes. Hand size, grip, monitor dimensions, and movement preference all affect what feels natural; copying another player’s setting is not a reliable shortcut.
Check pen behavior, surface, and driver support
Try to establish whether the pen tracks smoothly while hovering, taps register reliably, and contact does not introduce jumps or chatter. Surface friction affects how the pen feels and how quickly nibs wear. These qualities are not captured by pressure-level counts.
Check support for your operating system and the driver you intend to use. The Huion H640P’s listed compatibility, for example, is broader than a simple “works on PC” label, but support and driver behavior can vary by OS version. Do not assume every model behaves identically on Windows, macOS, Linux, or across osu!stable and osu!lazer.
Choose wired for simplicity
A wired USB connection is the simpler default for a fixed competitive setup: it avoids battery and pairing concerns. Wireless may suit portability or general drawing, but it is not inherently a performance upgrade.

Buy used only after checking the pen and condition
Older Wacom models—including CTL-471, CTL-470, PTK-440, and PTK-640—may be worth considering when local used listings are attractive. Kuuube’s guide covers older Wacom options, but condition and bundle contents can change the value substantially. Before buying, check:
- That the correct pen is included and tracks consistently.
- That the cable and USB connection work without interruption.
- That the tablet surface is not damaged or excessively worn.
- That a compatible driver is available for your operating system.
- What replacement pens or nibs would cost if needed.
Set up and tune your tablet
- Connect the tablet by USB and install the manufacturer’s current driver for your operating system. Restart if the installer requests it.
- Open the tablet utility and check that pen movement moves the cursor. If the driver offers pen and mouse modes, select absolute pen mode as a starting point.
- Map the tablet to the monitor you use for osu!. If the utility offers a monitor selection, confirm the correct display before adjusting the area.
- Begin with the full active area or a moderate mapping. Keep its aspect ratio aligned with the game monitor where possible to avoid unnecessary distortion.
- Play and adjust the mapped area in small increments. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped.
- Disable pen side buttons if they trigger accidental clicks or coincide with cursor jumps or dropped inputs.
- Test hovering, tapping, cursor stability, and gameplay before changing other settings.
OpenTabletDriver is another configuration option for osu! players, but compatibility and installation depend on the exact tablet and operating system. Check its current device support and OS-specific instructions before switching drivers; do not assume every model is equally supported.
Fix common tablet problems
The cursor feels delayed
Test cursor movement outside osu! first. If it also feels delayed there, check for smoothing or filters in the driver, confirm pen rather than mouse mode, and verify monitor mapping. Compare manufacturer software with another driver only if that exact model and OS are supported. You can also test another USB port or cable. Change one variable at a time; discomfort while adapting to a different control method is not, by itself, proof of technical latency.
Taps fail or the cursor jumps
Check the nib and pen, disable side buttons, and note whether the problem occurs during hover, on contact, or only while pressing a button. Try the manufacturer driver and another USB port or cable. If buying used, test the pen as well as the tablet surface. Kuuube’s guide specifically notes minor EMR noise on some older Wacom models and occasional CTL-472 input jumping or dropping tied to side-button use.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The tablet feels too small or too large
Before replacing it, change the mapped area. Enlarge the mapping if you want less cursor travel per millimeter; shrink it if you want the cursor to move farther with less pen travel. You can also use only part of a large surface or reposition it for a more comfortable wrist and forearm posture.
A mouse player struggles after switching
Mouse and tablet require different motor habits, so a temporary performance dip is not enough to diagnose a faulty tablet. Try lower-star maps for a while, keep the area stable for several sessions, and avoid repeatedly changing sensitivity. Short practice sessions are preferable if the new grip or movement causes discomfort. Returning to mouse is reasonable if tablet control does not suit you.
What if you meant an iPad, Android tablet, or pen display?
Those are different categories. A standalone iPad or Android device may suit mobile rhythm games, but it is not a drop-in replacement for the screenless graphics tablet normally meant by an osu!standard setup. A pen display adds a screen and is worth considering mainly if you also want on-screen drawing. Its display characteristics and a graphics tablet’s pen report rate describe different things and should not be compared as interchangeable performance measures.
