There is no officially measured “best” Star Wars game. This editor’s shortlist instead matches five distinct ways to play: party-based role-playing, cinematic lightsaber action, open-world exploration, large campaign-and-multiplayer battles, and classic-era warfare. Start with the play style you want, then check the current store listing for the exact platform and edition before buying.
How this top-five list is organized
The games below are ordered by reader fit rather than by a universal quality score. The official franchise pages establish each game’s premise and features, but they do not publish a comparative ranking, review average, current sales figure, active-player count or server-health report. A role-playing fan may reasonably prefer a different title from someone looking for a 40-player battle.

Use the labels as a decision guide. “Best for” describes the experience the game is built around; it is not a claim that the game is objectively superior. Platform information is tied to the editions and announcements identified by the official sources, so availability can change by region, storefront and generation of hardware.

1. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic — best for role-playing and meaningful choices
What you play
Knights of the Old Republic (often abbreviated KOTOR) is the choice-driven role-playing pick. You create and develop a protagonist, assemble a party, travel between seven worlds and decide how to use the Force. The official game page emphasizes a customizable group, lightsaber construction and a path that can lean toward the light or dark side.
#1 Best Overall
- No longer a Padawan, Cal has come into his own and grown into a powerful Jedi Knight; Carrying the memories and expectations of the Jedi Order with him, his crusade against the Empire has only become more perilous
- The cinematic combat system returns with additional Force abilities and new lightsaber fighting styles; Creatively leverage all these abilities and weapons to strategically take on an expanded host of enemies, sizing up strengths and weaknesses
- Discover new planets and familiar frontiers in the Star Wars galaxy, each with unique biomes, challenges, and enemies; Master new skills, equipment, and abilities that will augment the ways you explore, fight, and roam
- With larger areas to explore and more to discover off the beaten path, players who adventure beyond the horizon will find hidden rewards
That structure makes it the most natural choice here if your favorite Star Wars fantasy is not simply wielding a lightsaber, but deciding who your character becomes. Party members add conversations and tactical options, while character development gives repeated encounters more consequence than a purely linear action game.
Why it belongs on the shortlist
- Role-playing depth: Character development, party composition and equipment let you shape a run rather than follow one fixed combat style.
- Force alignment: Light- and dark-side choices give the story and your build a clear identity.
- Distinct setting: The seven-world journey offers a broad tour of the Star Wars universe instead of confining the adventure to one battlefield.
- Lightsaber construction: Building your saber is part of progression, not merely a visual flourish.
Who should choose it
Pick KOTOR if you enjoy dialogue, exploration, planning and seeing how decisions affect a long campaign. It is also the strongest fit for someone who wants a classic role-playing pace: pause to consider abilities and party roles, then commit to a build and alignment.
The cited official page lists iPad, iPhone, Mac and PC. Store editions can differ, so check whether the listing is for the intended operating system and whether a newer device or operating-system version is supported. That page gives the game a Teen rating; do not assume that rating automatically applies to every other title in this list.

What you play
Jedi: Survivor follows Cal Kestis in a third-person, single-player action-adventure. Its appeal is immediacy: move through environments, uncover routes, fight with a lightsaber and use Force abilities as the game expands Cal’s toolkit. The official description highlights exploration, added Force abilities and multiple lightsaber styles.
Unlike KOTOR, this is not a party-management role-playing game. The challenge is built around your control of Cal, your reading of enemy attacks and your decision about which lightsaber approach suits the encounter. Exploration breaks up combat and gives the campaign a cinematic rhythm.
Rank #2
- Continue Cal’s journey: No longer a padawan, Cal has come into his own and grown into a powerful Jedi Knight
- Go beyond your training: The cinematic combat system returns with additional force abilities and new lightsaber fighting styles
- Explore an untamed galaxy: Discover new planets and familiar frontiers in the Star Wars galaxy, each with unique biomes, challenges, and enemies
- Master new skills, equipment, and abilities that will augment the ways you explore, fight, and roam
- A New Hope, with Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Deluxe Edition: The “Galactic Hero” Cosmetic Pack: The “Scoundrel” Cosmetic, The “Rugged” BD-1 Cosmetic, The “DL-44” Blaster Set; The “New Hero” Cosmetic Pack: The “Rebel Hero” Cosmetic, The “BD-Astro” BD-1 Cosmetic, The “Rebel Hero” Lightsaber Set
Why it belongs on the shortlist
- Focused protagonist: Cal’s continuing story gives the campaign a clear emotional and narrative center.
- Third-person combat: You directly control movement, defense, Force use and saber attacks instead of issuing party commands.
- Multiple styles: The lightsaber-style system supports different approaches to fights rather than one mandatory animation set.
- Exploration between set pieces: Traversal and discovery are core activities, not loading-screen transitions between battles.
Who should choose it
This is the recommendation for a player who wants a polished-feeling, story-led Star Wars adventure and prefers action controls to menus and dialogue checks. It is also a sensible first choice for someone who wants to play alone and experience a modern presentation built around lightsaber combat.
The April 28, 2023 launch announcement listed PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Those are launch-platform details, not a guarantee that every later edition, upgrade or storefront has the same requirements. Confirm the exact version before purchase, especially if your console generation or PC specifications are a deciding factor.
3. Star Wars Outlaws — best for open-world freedom and a scoundrel fantasy
What you play
Star Wars Outlaws is the open-world choice. StarWars.com describes it as the first open-world Star Wars game and follows Kay Vess as she takes on missions across a criminal underworld. The game page highlights stealth, combat, exploration and piloting, so the fantasy is closer to being a resourceful outlaw than a conventional Jedi hero.
Open-world design changes the question from “Which ability should I use in this fight?” to “How do I approach this job?” You can look for routes, attempt stealth, engage directly or move between ground activity and piloting. That flexibility is the reason to choose it, not a promise that every mission has unlimited solutions.
Why it belongs on the shortlist
- Free-roaming structure: Exploration is a central activity rather than a short corridor between story scenes.
- Scoundrel perspective: Kay Vess provides a viewpoint distinct from the Jedi-centered stories in the other modern single-player pick.
- Mixed play: Stealth, direct combat and piloting give the campaign several activity types.
- Era-spanning atmosphere: Its premise uses the wider Star Wars underworld rather than limiting the player to a military front line.
Who should choose it
Choose Outlaws if your ideal Star Wars game lets you wander, choose an approach and play a capable non-Jedi protagonist. It is a better fit for players who find a mission checklist and environmental discovery more appealing than party statistics or tightly staged saber duels.
Rank #3
- Only at Amazon Limited Edition Content - The Rogue Infiltrator Character Pack includes cosmetics for Kay and Nix.
- Discover a galaxy of opportunity. Explore distinct locations with bustling cities and cantinas. Race across sprawling outdoor landscapes on your speeder. Each location brings new adventures, unique challenges, and enticing rewards if you’re willing to take the risk.
- Experience an original scoundrel story. Live the high-stakes lifestyle of an outlaw. Turn any situation to your advantage with Nix by your side: fight with your blaster, overcome enemies with stealth and gadgets, or find the right moments to distract enemies and gain the upper hand.
- Embark on high-stakes missions. Take on high-risk, high-reward missions from the galaxy’s crime syndicates. Steal valuable goods, infiltrate secret locations, and outwit enemies as one of the galaxy’s most wanted. Every choice you make influences your ever-changing reputation.
- Jump into the pilot seat. Pilot your ship, the Trailblazer, as you engage in thrilling dogfights with the Empire and other foes. Find the right opportunities to chase, evade, and attack to get the upper hand.
In the 2023 announcement, Massive Entertainment creative director Julian Gerighty called it “the first open-world Star Wars game.” That is the announced positioning of the project, not independent evidence that it is the best or most successful game here.
The game page lists PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Check the current listing for edition, region, system requirements and any platform-specific differences before committing.
4. Star Wars Battlefront II (2017) — best for campaign-and-multiplayer variety
What you play
The 2017 Battlefront II is the pick for players who want a named story campaign and large multiplayer battles in one package. Its official page describes both ground and space combat, allowing you to switch from infantry-scale firefights to battles involving starfighters and capital ships.
The multiplayer specification is unusually concrete: the page describes battles with up to 40 players in a multiplayer universe. For space combat, it describes up to 24 players plus 40 AI ships. These are mode capacities, not measurements of how many people are online today and not evidence of a quality ranking.
Local play and platform caveat
The official description also notes offline two-player split-screen, but explicitly limits that feature to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Do not assume that a PC or newer-console edition includes the same local mode. Confirm the release and platform first, especially if couch co-op is the reason you are buying.
Rank #4
- Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
- Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
- An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
- A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor
Why it belongs on the shortlist
- Two campaign paths: A story-focused experience gives context before or alongside repeatable matches.
- Ground and space combat: The range of battle types is broader than a shooter confined to one environment.
- Large match design: The cited capacities support a more expansive battlefield than a small-team arena.
- Offline option: Two-player split-screen is available on the specifically identified PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions.
Who should choose it
Pick this game when you want the flexibility to play a campaign alone, return for repeatable multiplayer battles or share a local screen on a supported older-console edition. It is less suitable if your priority is a branching role-playing story or a fully open-world map.
Always say “Battlefront II (2017)” when recommending this game. The name is easily confused with Battlefront II (2005), which appears in the Classic Collection and is a separate product.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection — best for classic-era battles
What the collection contains
The 2024 Battlefront Classic Collection packages Star Wars: Battlefront (2004) and Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005). The official announcement describes campaigns, heroes, vehicles and online play across the two classic games. This is therefore a historical battle sandbox as much as a modern purchase: its appeal comes from the original trilogy- and prequel-era scenarios and the older design approach.
Why it belongs on the shortlist
- Two games in one release: You receive both the 2004 original and the 2005 sequel rather than a single modern remake.
- Classic-era scope: Heroes, vehicles and battlefields draw on the original-trilogy and prequel-era sides of Star Wars.
- Campaign and online modes: It supports both structured solo content and match-based play, subject to the current edition and service conditions.
- Historical value: The collection lets players experience the older Battlefront formula that influenced later entries.
Launch platforms and what to verify
The March 7, 2024 announcement, updated March 14, listed Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, and PC through Steam at launch. Those launch listings should not be treated as a permanent guarantee of availability, cross-generation support or an active online population. Confirm the current format, platform, region and player activity before buying for online play.

How to choose among the five
Choose by the activity you want to repeat
| If you want to spend most of your time… | Start with… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Building a character, managing companions and making alignment decisions | Knights of the Old Republic | Its party-based role-playing structure and light/dark choices are the core experience. |
| Blocking attacks, using Force powers and mastering saber styles in a directed story | Jedi: Survivor | It centers on Cal Kestis in a cinematic third-person action adventure. |
| Roaming, choosing approaches to missions and piloting | Outlaws | It is the open-world, stealth-and-scoundrel option. |
| Joining large ground and space matches after or alongside a campaign | Battlefront II (2017) | It combines a story campaign with the cited large-scale multiplayer modes. |
| Revisiting original-trilogy and prequel-era battles in older-style shooters | Battlefront Classic Collection | It includes the 2004 and 2005 games, their campaigns, heroes, vehicles and online play. |
Choose by story versus repeat play
KOTOR, Jedi: Survivor, Outlaws and the 2017 Battlefront II all provide named narrative hooks or campaigns. The Classic Collection also contains campaigns, but its strongest identity is the ability to replay classic battles and modes. If you want one authored journey, begin with KOTOR, Jedi: Survivor or Outlaws; if you expect to return primarily for matches, consider one of the Battlefront choices.
Choose by platform certainty
Platform availability is title-specific. KOTOR’s cited page lists iPad, iPhone, Mac and PC; Jedi: Survivor’s 2023 launch announcement lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC; Outlaws lists PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5; and the Classic Collection’s 2024 launch announcement lists Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam. The 2017 Battlefront II entry needs particular care because the split-screen specification applies only to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the cited description.
Before purchase, open the store page for your region and check the product name, release year, edition, operating-system requirements and included modes. A listing for “Battlefront II” without a year can refer to the 2017 game or the 2005 game included in the Classic Collection.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating the list as an official ranking: These five represent different tastes; no cited source declares one the universal winner.
- Confusing the two Battlefront II games: Use “2017” for the modern campaign-and-multiplayer release and “2005” when referring to the classic game in the collection.
- Assuming one platform list covers every edition: Confirm the exact store listing, console generation and region.
- Reading capacity as current population: “Up to 40 players” and the space-combat figures describe supported mode capacity, not current matchmaking health.
- Generalizing the Teen rating: The cited rating is attached to KOTOR’s page; it does not establish ratings for the other four games.
- Expecting accessory advice to settle the choice: A controller or headset does not change whether you want role-playing, open-world exploration, cinematic action or multiplayer battles. Decide the format first.
Bottom line: match the game to your Star Wars fantasy
Start with Knights of the Old Republic for the deepest role-playing identity, Jedi: Survivor for a focused cinematic lightsaber adventure, Outlaws for open-world freedom, Battlefront II (2017) for campaign-plus-multiplayer scale, and the Battlefront Classic Collection for classic trilogy- and prequel-era battles. None is an evidence-based overall champion; the best choice is the one whose core activity you will want to keep doing after the opening mission.
