Start by checking for immediate threats, then develop your pieces toward useful squares, contest the center, and keep your king safe. These priorities give beginners a sound way to choose moves without memorizing an opening. They are guides, not automatic rules: what is safe and useful depends on the position.

What are you trying to achieve?

The goal is checkmate: attacking the opponent’s king so that the opponent has no legal move. Under FIDE’s Laws of Chess, effective January 1, 2023, a player may not leave their own king under attack or make a move that exposes it to attack. That is the rule-based reason king safety matters, not just a strategic preference.

In over-the-board chess, each player begins with 16 pieces on a board of 64 squares arranged in an 8-by-8 grid. You can practice the same strategic decisions on a standard board and pieces; a specialized or premium set is not required.

What should you check before choosing a plan?

Look for threats and loose pieces

Before making a move, ask what your opponent’s last move threatens and whether any of your pieces are undefended. Also check whether your king is in danger and whether a piece can be captured immediately. This quick scan is practical guidance, not a guarantee that you will spot every tactic.

Then choose a useful developing move

When no urgent threat changes your priorities, bring pieces out to squares where they can influence the game. Avoid moving the same piece repeatedly without a reason while other pieces remain undeveloped. US Chess identifies development and control of the center as important opening objectives in its “Ten Tips To Winning Chess”.

How do development and the center work together?

Central squares matter because pieces placed to influence them can often reach more of the board and affect both sides of the position. Developing a piece toward a useful square can therefore help you contest the center at the same time. Do not treat “control the center” as a command to occupy a particular square at any cost: the opponent’s threats and your pieces’ safety still matter.

As you consider a move, ask whether it develops a piece, challenges the opponent’s central influence, or supports a piece already active. A move that does none of these may still be right if it answers a threat or prevents a loss; strategy should respond to the position rather than override it.

When should you castle?

Castling can help place your king in a safer position and bring a rook into play. US Chess advises that “It’s generally a good idea to place your king in a safe place by castling early in the game.” Treat this as general organizational guidance, not a rule to castle on a fixed move. Castle only when it is legal and useful; a threat or tactical detail may make another move more urgent.

How can you use these priorities during a game?

  1. Check the opponent’s threat. Identify what their last move attacks and whether your king or a piece is in immediate danger.
  2. Check your own pieces. Notice pieces that are undefended or can be captured, and avoid overlooking a direct threat.
  3. Look for development and central influence. If there is no urgent tactical issue, prefer a move that brings a piece into useful action or contests the center.
  4. Consider king safety. Look for a safe, legal opportunity to castle, but do not force it when the position calls for something else.

These questions are a decision aid, not a move formula. A position may demand that you defend first, delay castling, or depart from a usual development plan.

What is a practical way to start practicing?

Use a standard chess set or a chessboard in a game app, and pause before each move to run through the threat, piece-safety, development, center, and king-safety checks. If you want guided learning beyond practice games, US Chess maintains learning resources for people new to chess. No single opening sequence is necessary to begin applying these priorities.
