For most people planning relaxed gaming this summer, Nintendo Switch 2 is the best starting point. It moves from handheld to TV play, makes local multiplayer easy, and suits travel, family sessions, and short bursts better than any conventional console. A PS5 is the stronger traditional home system for cinematic solo games; Xbox Series S is the lower-cost, subscription-first option; Xbox Series X suits disc owners and 4K televisions; and PS5 Pro is a luxury purchase for people with a premium display.
Prices below are U.S. listings or MSRPs observed in August 2026. Hardware availability and prices can change, so check the linked official store immediately before buying.

What makes a console “chill”?
Power is only one part of a relaxing setup. The better question is how little effort it takes to play the way you actually spend free time.
#1 Best Overall
- BEST VALUE IN GAMING — Experience next-gen speed and performance in the smallest XBOX ever. The XBOX Series S delivers powerful all-digital gameplay in a sleek, compact design.

- FOUR GENERATIONS OF DIGITAL GAMES — Play thousands of digital games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX with backward compatibility. Many titles are enhanced for better visuals and performance. Smart Delivery ensures you always get the best version for your console.
- Short sessions: sleep, suspend and quick-resume features let you get into a game without a long setup.
- Social play: local multiplayer, simple online chat and family-friendly software matter more than benchmark numbers.
- Travel: a hybrid system can follow you to a patio, dorm or holiday rental, but battery life, glare, charging and protection still matter.
- Low friction: a subscription library or reliable backward compatibility can make choosing the next game easier.
- Comfort: controller fit, noise, loading and display size determine whether a system feels inviting.
- Total value: include games, online access, storage, controllers and accessories—not only the box price.
Nintendo Switch 2: best overall for summer
Switch 2 is the most natural match for a “chill this summer” brief because it is simultaneously a handheld, tabletop system and television console. Nintendo launched it on June 5, 2025; the U.S. system MSRP is $449.99, or $499.99 bundled with Mario Kart World. See the official product page.
Why it works
- Flexible play: move from a TV session to handheld play without buying a second platform.
- Social design: Mario Kart World, party games, sports games and fighting games make the system easy to share.
- New communication: GameChat supports online communication, while GameShare lets supported games be shared under Nintendo’s compatibility rules.
- Library: Switch 2 exclusives, Switch 2 Edition upgrades and compatible original Switch games provide both new and back-catalog options. Compatibility is not universal; check Nintendo’s lists for important titles at Nintendo’s compatibility documentation.
Important limitations
GameChat requires an internet connection and Nintendo Account. After the free-access period ended March 31, 2026, it also requires Nintendo Switch Online. Video chat needs a compatible USB-C camera sold separately. Nintendo says users under 16 need parental or guardian approval through the updated parental-controls system; details are in Nintendo’s launch and communication notice.
For travel, budget for a case and screen protection. Outdoor glare, brightness, charging and game-specific battery demands can change the handheld experience. Digital games also consume storage, so a large library may require additional planning.
PlayStation 5: best traditional all-rounder
The standard PS5 is the safest choice for someone who wants one straightforward living-room console, major third-party releases and cinematic single-player games. PlayStation Direct listed the 1TB PS5 at $649.99 and the 825GB Digital Edition at $599.99 on August 18, 2026. Sony’s price announcement says those recommended prices took effect April 2, 2026: official announcement.

The Digital Edition has no built-in disc drive. That is fine if you download everything, but a disc-capable PS5 is the better long-term fit if you buy used games, borrow from friends, resell titles or collect physical editions. Include the cost of games, a second DualSense controller, a headset, possible SSD expansion and the relevant PlayStation Plus plan in your budget; verify current membership pricing on PlayStation’s official page.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
PS5 has a broad first-party and third-party catalog, but not every prominent PlayStation game is exclusive to the console. It is a home system, so it cannot match Switch 2 for travel.
Xbox Series S: best lower-cost, subscription-first setup
Series S is the most approachable current console when you mainly download games and expect to use Game Pass. Microsoft’s inspected U.S. listings showed $399.99 for the 512GB model and $449.99 for the 1TB model; the 512GB listing was marked out of stock. Treat those as observed store prices, not a permanent guarantee: Microsoft Store listings.
What you get
- Digital-only games, a compact design and 512GB or 1TB storage.
- A 1440p target and support for up to 120fps in supported games; actual resolution and frame rate depend on the title and display.
- Quick Resume, cloud saves, Smart Delivery and supported backward compatibility across Xbox generations. Microsoft describes Series X|S as supporting thousands of games and hundreds through Game Pass; catalogs and plan benefits change, so verify the current offer at Xbox Game Pass.
The 512GB model can fill quickly with modern games, and an expansion card can reduce its apparent savings. Digital purchases cannot be lent or resold like discs and remain tied to your account and platform policies. Series S is a strong fit for a smaller television or casual player, not for someone demanding the best 4K presentation or physical ownership.

Series X is the Xbox choice for a 4K display, a physical library or maximum conventional Xbox performance. Microsoft listed the standard 1TB disc model at $649.99, a 1TB Digital Edition at $599.99 and the 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition at $799.99 on the inspected store page.
The standard model combines a disc drive, 1TB SSD, 4K-oriented output and up to 120fps in supported titles. Quick Resume, Smart Delivery, cloud saves and backward compatibility are useful when a relaxed session means moving among several games. The official comparison explains the supported features.

- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Series X is less distinctive than Switch 2 for travel and less inexpensive than Series S. Choose it when discs, Xbox history and a capable 4K/HDR television matter enough to justify the extra cost.
PlayStation 5 Pro: best premium picture quality
PS5 Pro costs $899.99 and includes 2TB storage, according to PlayStation Direct and Sony’s April 2, 2026 price announcement. It is aimed at owners of a high-quality 4K display who value sharper images, steadier frame rates and extra storage more than price.
Its advantages vary by game, and a small or older 1080p television makes them harder to notice. There is no built-in optical disc drive, so collectors must add the optional drive and account for that cost. For most casual buyers, the standard PS5 delivers the core experience at a much lower price. Check the current official listing for configuration details.

It is the better Xbox platform for a physical library, backward-compatible purchases and a large-screen setup.

The $899.99 price is difficult to justify without a high-end 4K/HDR screen and a willingness to pay for title-specific enhancements.
Calculate the complete setup cost
| Cost item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Console | Initial hardware price and storage configuration |
| Included controller | Check whether a second player needs another purchase |
| Games | Physical discounts, used copies and digital pricing differ |
| Online membership | Many multiplayer features require a paid platform service; free-to-play rules can differ |
| Storage expansion | Especially important for the 512GB Series S |
| Second controller | Necessary for many couch-multiplayer sessions |
| Case and screen protection | Practical essentials for Switch 2 travel |
| Headset or camera | Relevant to voice and video communication |
| Display | PS5 Pro and Series X make more sense with a capable 4K/HDR screen |
Nintendo lists standard Switch Online at $19.99 per year and the Expansion Pack at $49.99 per year on its membership comparison page; verify that those prices remain current at Nintendo’s official comparison. Do not assume a subscription means permanent ownership: catalogs rotate, plans differ and access ends when eligibility ends.
Quick Recap
Common buying mistakes to avoid
- Buying digital-only hardware before considering used games, lending, resale or physical collections.
- Paying for PS5 Pro or Series X without a display that can reveal the difference.
- Ignoring storage expansion, a second controller or travel accessories when comparing prices.
- Assuming “backward compatible” means every older title works identically; check supported games.
- Treating an out-of-stock listing as a real bargain.
- Leaving consoles in direct sun or a hot vehicle; keep ventilation clear and protect handheld screens.
- Choosing from rumored future hardware instead of systems and games available now.
