What is known about Tornado?
The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust says Tornado was completed in 2008 and describes it as the first mainline steam locomotive built in the UK since 1960. The Trust’s overview also displays the wording “since 1961,” so its pages are inconsistent about that comparison year. The Trust says Tornado reached 100 mph on a test train in 2017; that is a preservation-era test-train figure, not a regular service speed.
The Trust’s undated current webpage figures also say the locomotive has travelled 140,000 miles and that 150 volunteers worked on the project. The pages do not date those two figures, so they should be read as Trust-published webpage statistics rather than independently audited totals tied to a particular year. More background appears on the Trust’s Tornado overview.
