It places Lil’ Dragon, Electron, Risen, Officer Piggle, Scarecrow, and Soulstealer in A tier. Treat these as editorial priorities, not proven win-rate rankings: the guide provides no performance data, and its expanded card descriptions do not always match its summary table.
Castle Duels tier list: Pocket Gamer’s published table
The following reproduces the summary table in Pocket Gamer’s guide, marked updated October 6, 2026, for version 25.0. Its extended prose adds or discusses cards that are absent from the table, so the tiers below should not be silently merged with those descriptions. Read the published guide.
| Tier | Cards listed in the summary table |
|---|---|
| S | Banshee, Cowboy, Tinker, Magma Spirit, Reaper, Riding Hood, Shiba, Woodbeard, Witch |
| A | Lil’ Dragon, Electron, Risen, Officer Piggle, Scarecrow, Soulstealer |
| B | Vampire, Zeus, Gadget, Combat Engineer, Cultist, Darkwood Fay, Golem, Swamplord, Phoenix, Bard, Armorer, Hypnotoad, Angel, Forest Guardian |
| C | Archer, Fighter, Pirate, Poison Frog, Priest, Crusher, Slime, Hungry Truffle, Alchemist, Assassin, Cold Mage |
This is one guide’s editorial ordering, not a statistical ranking: it does not report win rates, pick rates, matchup results, or a repeatable scoring method. Use the tiers as a shortlist for investigation, then judge cards by role, ability conditions, Arena access, and the upgrades you can afford.
Why the S-tier examples stand out
Pocket Gamer’s descriptions point to distinct tactical strengths rather than a universal best-card formula. The guide’s card explanations describe the following functions:

#1 Best Overall
- 🏯 A NEW GAME IN THE WHITE CASTLE UNIVERSE Return to Himeji Castle for a completely new strategic challenge. The White Castle: Duel is a standalone game with its own rules and mechanics—The White Castle is not required to play

- 🎴 NEW MECHANICS, NEW STRATEGY Duel brings a different way to play to the White Castle universe. There are no dice or bridges—instead, use six lamp cylinders to select actions and activate the effects of your lamp cards.
- 🧠 TACTICAL ACTION SELECTION Manage resources, place clan seals, gain influence cards, collect valuable merchandise, and adapt your plans to your opponent. A special token can even exchange board actions, creating unexpected tactical opportunities.
- 📦 FOR FANS AND NEW PLAYERS ALIKE Created by Sheila Santos and Israel Cendrero (Llama Dice) and illustrated by Joan Guardiet. Whether you are new to the White Castle universe or already own The White Castle, Duel offers a fresh standalone experience designed specifically for 2 players. Ages 10+, approximately 30 minutes. Multilingual edition.
- Banshee: Her damage scales with the number of units on the battlefield, so timing and having a crowded board matter.
- Cowboy: A specialist who pulls a target, damages it, and stuns it—useful when disrupting an opponent’s formation is valuable.
- Tinker: Deals damage across multiple enemies, launches a large projectile, and also deals damage when he dies.
- Magma Spirit: Combines burning attacks with regeneration and gains damage as enemies burn; its value depends partly on burn setup and timing.
- Reaper: The guide describes it as immune to crowd control and able to repeatedly stun enemies while dealing damage.
These are the guide’s ability descriptions, not independent test results. A card’s practical value still depends on the opposing lineup, the rest of your team, and whether its conditions are met.
How to read the other listed tiers
Some A- and B-tier entries offer roles that can matter as much as raw damage. Pocket Gamer describes them as follows:
Rank #2
- BUILD YOUR PERFECT TABLEAU: Recruit characters from the Village or Castle to create a 3x3 grid of cards in your personal tableau. Each card offers unique abilities and end-game scoring conditions!
- STRATEGIC CARD COMBINATIONS: Master the art of combos by strategically placing your cards and triggering their abilities to rack up the most points by the end of the game.
- PLAYER AGENCY & FLEXIBILITY: Use the Messenger pawn to switch between the Village and Castle markets and wipe the board to gain access to fresh cards and maximize your strategic choices.
- EASY-TO-LEARN, QUICK TO PLAY: With clear symbology and a helpful game aid, Castle Combo is perfect for family game nights or competitive sessions with friends. Playable in about 20-30 minutes.
- PERFECT FOR FAMILY GAME NIGHT: A light yet challenging game designed for 2-4 players, Castle Combo offers a mix of strategy and luck in every round. Ideal for ages 8 and up!
- Electron (A): Combines damage over time with damage reduction and slowing.
- Risen (A): An Epic tank with taunt and a shield that scales with nearby enemies.
- Officer Piggle (A): Temporarily summons a shielded robot.
- Scarecrow (A): Heals and poisons through summoned plants.
- Bard (B): Removes crowd control and debuffs while healing.
- Darkwood Fay (B): Heals and charges ally abilities.
- Hypnotoad (B): Its Hypnosis can move affected enemies out of formation and temporarily remove them from combat, according to the version 23.0 notes.
Support, control, durability, and damage can solve different problems. When choosing between two cards, compare their role and ability, survivability, control or support contribution, setup needs, availability, and the upgrade resources you can commit—not just their letter grades.
Why some card placements need a version caveat
The summary table and the guide’s extended descriptions are not fully consistent. In its prose, the guide discusses Angel as newly reworked and places it in its S-tier discussion, although Angel appears in the table’s B tier. It also names Cryomaster, Inferno, Sand Elemental, Candle, and Archivist in S-tier prose, and Chef, Champion, Mister Frost, and Jotun in A-tier prose, despite their absence from the summary table. Those prose mentions do not establish confirmed placements in the summary ranking.

Version changes make the distinction important. MY.GAMES’ version 23.0 update notes describe Cryomaster’s ice wave applying Frostbite: at rank 3 it reduces attack speed, and at Star rank it reduces both attack and movement speed; the effect weakens over time. The same notes explain Hypnotoad’s Hypnosis effect. The App Store lists version 25.0 on September 28, 2026, with an Angel ability rework, stronger ally support, new mechanics, and Glyph support; version 24.0, dated August 31, lists Glyph-system changes and new units. Pocket Gamer’s October 6 guide is later than the listed version 25.0 release date, but that timing alone does not show that every placement was retested after the changes. Check current in-game descriptions and balance updates before spending heavily.
Prioritize cards you can use and upgrade
Pocket Gamer says Legendary cards are generally unlocked after Arena 4, with exceptions, and recommends improving cards already available to help progress. If you have not reached the relevant Arena or do not own a listed Legendary, use the tier table as a future reference—not a reason to neglect a functional team built from your current collection.

- IMMERSIVE FANTASY ADVENTURE: Escape the Dark Castle is a captivating fantasy adventure game designed for 1-4 players. It prioritizes storytelling, atmosphere, and cooperative gameplay.
- QUICK SETUP, FAST-PACED ACTION: Enjoy a game that takes only 2 minutes to set up and lasts around 30 minutes per session, making it accessible for tabletop gaming newcomers.
- UNIQUE, EVER-CHANGING EXPERIENCE: No two games are the same! Dive into a world where players assume the roles of prisoners and collaborate to overcome the castle's horrors, traps, and challenges.
- BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED CHAPTER CARDS: Explore a richly illustrated world where each challenge and twist in the narrative is represented by large, stunning chapter cards.
- SHARED STORYTELLING: Unveil chapter cards one by one, transforming the game into a shared storytelling experience where players make critical decisions on their quest to escape.
Upgrade resources can be scarce, so focus investment on cards that fit your lineup and that you can realistically continue leveling. The upgrade system also changed: MY.GAMES’ version 22.0 notes, dated June 15, 2026, state, “Legendary Spheres are no longer required to upgrade Legendary units: you only need unit cards and gold.” The notes add that from level 11, the copies needed per level increased, while the total entities needed to reach level 15 decreased compared with the previous system. See MY.GAMES update notes for the official context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical way to choose your next investment
- Start with access: Identify cards you own and can field now. Treat locked Legendary cards as longer-term targets; Legendary access is generally after Arena 4, with exceptions.
- Identify the job your team needs: Decide whether you need damage, a tank, healing, crowd control, disruption, or support for ally abilities.
- Check the conditions: Consider whether the ability needs a crowded board, burning enemies, nearby allies, or a suitable target to deliver its value.
- Compare the cost you can sustain: Check your available cards and gold before committing scarce upgrade resources, especially for the higher-level copy requirements described in version 22.0.
- Verify the live version: Read current in-game ability text and official update notes. The published tier table is dated to version 25.0, and later balance changes may alter what works for your lineup.
Because the tier guide provides no matchup-specific or usage statistics, no letter grade can establish that a card will outperform another in every deck. The table is most useful as a dated editorial shortlist; the stronger choice for your account is the accessible, affordable card whose role and conditions fit your team.
