For a first-time player, choose Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition if you want the current all-in-one PC package and can tolerate launch-period technical problems. Choose the original SHOGUN 2 if established stability, Steam Workshop mods, or an existing library matters more. Complete Edition combines the 2011 strategy game with all of its downloadable content, refreshed presentation, full Japanese voice acting and additional playable minor factions. It also replaces the original mod ecosystem with Mod.io, and early October 2026 coverage reports bugs, graphical defects and poor performance. Those trade-offs—not the campaign design itself—decide which edition is right for you.
What is the difference between the original and Complete Edition?
The original Total War: SHOGUN 2 is the 2011 PC release. Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition is a 2026 PC release described by SEGA as an “updated and enhanced version of SHOGUN 2 and all of its DLC in one complete package.” It is not a separate sequel or a new campaign built from scratch. The strategic map, real-time battles and Sengoku-period setting come from the same game, while the newer edition changes presentation, audio, available minor factions and mod distribution.

Complete Edition launched in October 2026. SEGA says Steam purchasers receive the original game and its downloadable content as part of that package. The original standalone Steam listing stopped being purchasable on 28 September 2026, although people who already own it can continue to play it.

Which edition should a new player start with?
Choose Complete Edition for the fullest package
Complete Edition is the straightforward choice if you do not already own the game. It puts the base game and every DLC item in one purchase, adds refreshed presentation and full Japanese voice acting, and expands the playable roster with minor factions. You do not have to reconstruct the 2011 release from separate components or wonder which downloadable content you are missing.
#1 Best Overall
- Choose from 9 different clans and compete online and offline for the undisputed supremacy of Medieval Japan
- Play through the Main Campaign in single player or invite a friend online to play competitively or cooperatively in Campaign Multiplayer mode
- Developed according to Sun Tzu's principles in the Art of War, the Artificial Intelligence constantly analyzes its situation
- Build and govern cities, recruit and train troops, conduct diplomacy and manage your agents
- Improved land and naval battle gameplay, now with the ability to combine forces and attacks
That recommendation is conditional. Windows Central reported more than 1,850 Steam reviews shortly after launch with complaints about bugs, graphical issues and performance. GamesRadar+ described the early Steam reception as overwhelmingly negative and also reported performance complaints. These reports describe the launch window in October 2026, not a final post-patch result. If you are comfortable waiting for patches or accepting uneven performance while the release matures, Complete Edition offers the most complete starting point. If you need a predictable installation immediately, the original is the safer fit when you can access an existing license.
Choose the original for mods or proven familiarity
The original remains the better option for players whose priority is the established Steam Workshop catalog, a mod list they already use, or a campaign setup that has behaved reliably for years. The newer edition does not preserve that advantage: SEGA’s support FAQ says it uses integrated Mod.io support and that mods made for the original SHOGUN 2 are not compatible with Complete Edition.
Owners of the original do not lose access because its standalone listing ended. SEGA states that existing owners can continue playing. There is therefore no technical need to abandon a working original installation simply because Complete Edition is now the current product.
What does Complete Edition add?
All downloadable content in one package
SEGA positions Complete Edition as the base game and all DLC together. Because no separate upgrade price, DLC-by-DLC purchase breakdown or regional pricing policy is stated, do not assume that an existing owner receives a particular discount or that every storefront labels the contents identically. The meaningful distinction is packaging: a new buyer gets the complete content set rather than assembling it piecemeal.

- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
Refreshed presentation
Launch coverage describes refreshed visuals and presentation. This is an update to the same strategy and battle systems, not evidence of a redesigned campaign or a new engine. The visual refresh may make the newer edition more attractive on a modern PC, but early reports of graphical problems mean that improved assets do not automatically translate into a cleaner launch experience.
Full Japanese voice acting
Complete Edition adds full Japanese voice acting. No official feature description specifies whether every line, cinematic or battle bark was rerecorded, so treat “full Japanese voice acting” as the documented feature rather than assuming a particular coverage percentage. Players seeking a more consistently Japanese presentation have a clear reason to prefer the newer edition.
Additional playable minor factions
SEGA and PC Gamer report additional playable minor factions. The available evidence does not establish the number, names or campaign rules for those factions, so the safe conclusion is that the playable roster is broader than in the original release. Do not buy it expecting a wholly new grand campaign; the documented change is extra faction choice within the existing game.

No. SEGA Support states: “Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition is launching with integrated mod support with Mod.IO, therefore mods from the original Total War: SHOGUN 2 are not compatible with Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition.” This is an edition-level compatibility break, not a setting you can fix by copying a folder or changing a launch option.

- Choose from 9 different clans and compete on and offline for the undisputed supremacy of Medieval Japan. Gain experience to level up your own character-warlord as well as your generals and agents.
- Play through the Main Campaign in single player or invite a friend online to play competitively or cooperatively in Campaign Multiplayer mode.
- Developed according to Sun Tzu's principles in the Art of War, the Artificial Intelligence constantly analyzes its situation and reacts to your every move with greater precision and variety.
- A streamlined User Interface makes management of your kingdom much easier. Build and govern cities, recruit and train troops, conduct diplomacy and manage your agents - each feature is now introduced with comprehensive tutorials
What the incompatibility means
- Steam Workshop mods made for the 2011 game should be treated as original-only content.
- Complete Edition’s supported distribution platform is Mod.io.
- A mod author must provide a Complete Edition-compatible version; the original upload is not enough.
- Your original mod order, load priority and configuration should not be assumed to transfer.
How to decide if mods outweigh the new features
Write down the specific mods that make your current campaigns work or that you consider essential. If any are unavailable on Mod.io, or if your enjoyment depends on a large established Workshop collection, stay with the original. If you mostly play unmodded campaigns and value the refreshed presentation, Japanese voice acting and additional factions, the compatibility break may not affect your use case. Keep the original installation and its mod setup available if you are experimenting with the newer edition; an incompatible mod cannot be made safe merely by enabling it.
Can you still buy the original on Steam?
Not as a standalone purchase from its original Steam listing after 28 September 2026. SEGA’s product information gives that date for the end of standalone purchase. The same information says the original remains playable for people who already own it, so the sale cutoff does not revoke an existing license, remove a local installation or end access to its campaigns.
Complete Edition is the current PC package. SEGA’s launch announcement says Steam buyers of Complete Edition receive the original game and its DLC as well. Because regional storefront behavior and any bundle treatment are not established here, check the exact product description in your country before paying and confirm which edition your account will receive.

What the early evidence says
The original had more than 22,000 Steam reviews in Windows Central’s comparison, reflecting a much larger and longer-established review history. Complete Edition had more than 1,850 reviews shortly after its October 2026 launch. Early reviewers reported bugs, graphical problems and performance complaints; GamesRadar+ characterized the initial Steam reception as overwhelmingly negative.
Rank #4
Those counts and impressions are time-sensitive. They describe launch conditions, not a permanent technical verdict. No authoritative post-launch patch benchmark or confirmed long-term review score is established in the available evidence. It would be inaccurate to claim that Complete Edition is now fixed—or that it will always run worse—without a later, authoritative update.
What stability should mean for your decision
- You want to play immediately with the fewest unknowns: prefer the original if you already own it and it runs acceptably on your PC.
- You can tolerate launch bugs while updates arrive: Complete Edition offers the broader feature set, but buy with the understanding that early coverage found technical problems.
- You are making a purchase decision based on benchmarks: look for a current, version-specific test after the launch period; the early review reports are not a substitute for one.
Is Complete Edition worth it if you already own the original?
There is no universal upgrade answer because no published upgrade price, loyalty discount or exact performance of a patched build is available. Existing owners should treat the decision as a feature trade rather than a mandatory replacement.
Reasons to stay with the original
- Your Steam Workshop mod collection is central to how you play.
- Your current installation is stable and you do not want launch-period bugs or performance uncertainty.
- You already own the DLC you care about and do not need a repackaged bundle.
- You prefer the original presentation and audio behavior.
Reasons to add Complete Edition
- You want refreshed visuals and full Japanese voice acting.
- You want to play the additional minor factions.
- You want a single package that includes the base game and all DLC.
- You mostly play without legacy mods and are willing to evaluate the launch build on your hardware.
Buying Complete Edition should be an addition for those goals, not an assumption that your original mods will migrate or that the new release is automatically more stable.
Original versus Complete Edition: decision guide
Pick the original when any of these statements is true
- “My campaigns depend on Steam Workshop mods.” Original mods are not compatible with Complete Edition.
- “I already own it and it works.” Existing owners can continue playing after the 28 September 2026 sales cutoff.
- “I value established behavior over visual updates.” Complete Edition had launch reports of bugs, graphics issues and performance complaints.
- “I need a specific mod or load order.” Unless the author releases a Mod.io-compatible version, the original is the dependable choice for that setup.
Pick Complete Edition when these priorities matter more
- “I am buying SHOGUN 2 for the first time.” The package includes the game and all DLC.
- “I want the updated presentation.” Refreshed visuals and full Japanese voice acting are documented additions.
- “I want more faction options.” The newer edition adds playable minor factions.
- “I do not rely on legacy Workshop mods.” Mod.io is the supported integrated system for the new edition.
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming “Complete Edition” is only a cosmetic remaster
It changes more than graphics. The package includes all DLC, adds full Japanese voice acting and introduces additional playable minor factions. Conversely, it is still the same core SHOGUN 2 experience, so do not expect a new sequel-scale campaign.
Best Value
- The American, British and French nations played an important part in the story of the Boshin war and your relations with these foreign powers will be integral to unit recruitment and to advancing your technology trees.
- Thirty nine new land units, including modern ranged units - such as the Gatling gun and Armstrong gun - controllable in a new third-person mode.
- New port siege battle type, this new battle type triggers when attempting a naval assault on an occupied enemy port. The attacking fleet must sail into the harbour and capture the port, running the gauntlet of coastal gun defences.
- New land and sea unit interactions, during a land battle, armies can call in offshore artillery support barrages.
- Campaign map bombardments: offshore naval units can bombard armies and cities in adjacent coastal areas on the campaign map itself.
Assuming every original mod will be converted automatically
SEGA explicitly says the original mods are incompatible. Check for a separate Mod.io release from the author instead of copying Workshop files and expecting them to load.
Treating launch reviews as a permanent benchmark
Windows Central and GamesRadar+ reported early technical complaints, but those reports came shortly after launch. Use them as a warning about launch risk, not as proof of an unchanging long-term frame-rate result.
Assuming the sales cutoff disables the original
The 28 September 2026 date concerns standalone purchasing. SEGA says existing owners can keep playing, so an owned copy remains usable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBottom line for different players
New to SHOGUN 2: start with Complete Edition if you want one purchase containing the game and all DLC, plus the presentation, voice and faction additions. Factor in the launch-period bug and performance reports before committing.
Long-time player with mods: keep the original. Its Workshop ecosystem is not portable to Complete Edition, and the original remains playable for current owners.
Original owner without important mods: consider Complete Edition for refreshed visuals, full Japanese voice acting and additional minor factions, but wait for current stability evidence if technical reliability is your first priority.
Buyer seeking the original today: the standalone Steam sale ended on 28 September 2026. Complete Edition is the current PC package; verify the storefront listing and included entitlements in your region.
