Play The Changeling by advancing through Theatre objectives, completing their Schemes, and adapting his shapeshifting in battles—not by treating map-wide conquest as the main checklist. Minor Schemes lead to a Theatre’s Grand Scheme and its battle; complete enough Grand Schemes to unlock the Ultimate Scheme, the campaign’s victory objective. Creative Assembly’s Steam description frames the campaign around targeted objectives, cultists, stolen identities, and manipulated tensions.
How The Changeling’s campaign works
The campaign’s progression is a chain of objectives rather than a generic map-conquest plan:
- Open the Theatre objectives and use the listed Schemes as your immediate to-do list.
- Complete the smaller Schemes in a Theatre to advance toward its Grand Scheme.
- Complete the Grand Scheme, which culminates in a battle and rewards.
- Carry out enough Grand Schemes to unlock the Ultimate Scheme and pursue that victory objective.
The official description presents Scheme tasks as including building construction, stealing identities, and instigating tensions. Check the current objective text for the exact requirements; those are the actionable instructions for your campaign state.
How to use cultists
Cultists are part of the campaign’s deception theme and support its objective-driven play. Creative Assembly’s Patch 5.2 developer blog describes a broader Chaos Cult rework: Cultists establish cults through an agent action, Cult Magi create special cult locations, and cult buildings can exchange benefits for discoverability risk. Those are general Chaos Cult details, not a Changeling-specific list of building names or values, so use the live interface to confirm what a particular cult can do before committing resources.

How to approach battles and shapeshifting
The Changeling is described as a spellcasting shapeshifter who can adopt the form of lords he faces. Before a fight, inspect the opposing lord and the forms available to you, then choose with the battle’s needs in mind. The official description does not establish a universally best form, spell setup, or army composition, so treat form selection as situational rather than following an unsupported fixed ranking.
Choose a campaign mode
The Changeling DLC is playable in both Immortal Empires and Realms of Chaos, according to its Steam listing. Choose the campaign context you want; the cited listing does not establish that one mode is easier, shorter, or better for a particular build. On Steam, the Total War: WARHAMMER III base game is required, and the DLC is digital content.

Current-version issue to know about
Creative Assembly’s Update 9.0 notes, published September 22, 2026, say a bug preventing The Changeling from acquiring forms through diplomatic alliances and vassalisation after Kairos confederated him was fixed. The fix requires starting a new game or loading a save from before confederating The Changeling. If you are continuing a campaign affected by that sequence, the patch note’s save condition matters.
