Steam may need room for a temporary copy of much of the installed game, the downloaded patch, and the rebuilt files. During that process, the free space required can be closer to the game’s full working footprint than to the patch’s displayed download size.
Do not delete the installation immediately. Verify the files, check for mods or manually changed program files, confirm which drive Steam is using, and add a secondary Steam Library on a larger drive if necessary. Reinstall only after those steps fail.

Why a small WARHAMMER update can need a large amount of space
Steam does not always patch a game by replacing a few files in place. SEGA explains that Steam can back up the existing installation, apply the newly downloaded data to that duplicate, and then delete the old installation. This protects the original files while the update is assembled, but it also creates a temporary storage peak.

The number shown beside an update is generally the amount Steam must download. It does not necessarily include the space needed for the old installation, a backup or duplicate, temporary patch data, and the rebuilt post-update files. Large archive files can also be expanded or rewritten during installation, so a patch that appears modest in the download queue may still require many gigabytes on the game’s drive.

Why the warning appears before the download finishes
Steam checks available capacity before or during the staging process. If the library drive cannot accommodate the temporary peak, the update can stop with a disk-space error even though the final installed game would fit. Free space elsewhere on the computer may not help if Steam’s working files are tied to the drive containing that library or to the location selected for the download.
How much free space does a WARHAMMER update need?
There is no single current requirement for every Total War: WARHAMMER edition, DLC combination, or patch. The clearest published example is SEGA’s WARHAMMER II FAQ for the Mortal Empires update. It describes approximately 85 GB of total disk space during installation, including 44.5 GB of temporary files, and an approximately 42.5 GB installation after the patch. Those figures describe that edition and update, not a universal rule for WARHAMMER I, WARHAMMER III, or every later patch.
| Published WARHAMMER II Mortal Empires example | Amount | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Total space during installation | About 85 GB | The temporary peak while Steam installs the update |
| Temporary files included in that peak | About 44.5 GB | Working data created during Steam’s patch process |
| Post-patch installation footprint | About 42.5 GB | The approximate space occupied after the old files and temporary data are removed |
Use the table as an illustration of the difference between installed size and update headroom. Your required capacity can be higher or lower depending on the game, language files, installed downloadable content, the patch’s file layout, and the Steam client’s staging behavior. A historical figure should not be treated as a guaranteed number for a current update.
Fix the error without deleting the game
Work through these checks in order. They separate a genuine capacity problem from a damaged or modified installation, and they minimize unnecessary downloads.
1. Verify the installed files
SEGA’s Steam troubleshooting instructions use this path:
Rank #2
- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
- Open Library in Steam.
- Right-click the Total War game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
Steam compares the local installation with its records and replaces files it identifies as missing or damaged. Verification can itself require some temporary write space, so leave as much room as possible before starting it. When the check completes, restart the update rather than assuming that a repaired file automatically resumes every failed patch.
2. Review Workshop mods and manually changed files
Disable or remove mods that alter the game, and consider whether files in the program directory were edited outside Steam. SEGA notes that mods and other program-file changes can prevent the game from functioning correctly after an update. Keep a record of the mod load order or copy configuration files before removing anything you may want to restore.
A mod conflict is not fixed by freeing more storage. If the update completes but the game then crashes, shows missing content, or refuses to start, test with mods disabled before attempting another reinstall.
3. Check the drive that actually holds the library
Look at the free space on the exact volume containing the WARHAMMER Steam Library. Also check the drive Steam uses for downloads or staging if it differs from the library drive. A computer can show plenty of total free space while the relevant volume is nearly full.
- Confirm the library’s drive letter or mount point in Steam’s storage management screen.
- Check free space in the operating system, not only the size displayed in the Steam download window.
- Account for other queued Steam updates, shader caches, screenshots, and unrelated files that may consume capacity while the patch runs.
Pause or cancel unrelated downloads, then retry after enough room is available on the required volume.

4. Add a secondary Steam Library on a larger drive
When the primary drive cannot provide the temporary headroom, SEGA specifically recommends creating or registering a secondary Steam Library folder on another storage drive. This gives Steam a larger location in which to install or move the game instead of forcing the update through the constrained volume.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Retry only after Steam can use the larger location
After adding storage, make sure the WARHAMMER installation or its Steam Library is associated with that location. Then resume the update and watch the free-space value while Steam downloads and installs. The space used can rise substantially during staging and fall again when temporary files are removed; that pattern is normal for this type of patch.
6. Reinstall only as a last resort
If verification, mod cleanup, and relocation do not resolve the error, reinstalling may be appropriate. Before uninstalling, preserve save games, preferences, screenshots, and any configuration files you intend to keep. Cloud synchronization is not a substitute for checking the local folders, particularly if a save or setting has not finished syncing.
How to use another drive for the Steam Library
The wording can vary slightly between Steam client versions, but the process is the same: register a folder on a drive with sufficient capacity, then place the game in that library.
- Connect the internal or external drive and confirm that the operating system can read and write to it reliably.
- In Steam, open the storage management area from the client’s settings and choose the option to add a library or storage location.
- Select the larger drive, create or choose a folder for Steam games, and confirm it as a Steam Library folder.
- Use the game’s Steam management or move option to place Total War: WARHAMMER in the newly registered library, or install it there if the existing copy must be removed.
- Start the update again after Steam shows the game under the new library location.
Keep the drive connected whenever you want to launch or update the game. If it is an external device, avoid disconnecting it during a move or patch, and use the operating system’s safe-removal procedure when taking it offline. A library that disappears while Steam is working can create a different set of file errors.

What to look for when choosing additional storage
The official guidance establishes the need for additional registered storage, not a particular drive model. Compare the practical characteristics below against the way you play and update the game.
| Factor | Why it matters for WARHAMMER updates | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Usable capacity and update headroom | The drive must hold the installed game and the temporary peak at the same time. | Use the operating system’s usable-space figure, leaving room for future DLC and other Steam updates. |
| Sustained write performance | Steam may write and rewrite large files during staging; sustained speed affects how long that phase lasts. | Look for sustained, not only burst, write specifications. |
| Interface speed | An external drive can be limited by its connection even when the storage device itself is fast. | Match the drive and computer ports, cable, and enclosure standard. |
| Portability | Portable storage is convenient for moving a library between systems but can be unplugged accidentally. | Prefer a secure connection and a location where the cable will not be disturbed. |
| Reliability | A failed or intermittently disconnected drive can corrupt a move or interrupt an update. | Use a reputable device, maintain backups of saves, and monitor the drive for errors. |
| Price per terabyte | More capacity may be cheaper per terabyte, while a faster device can cost more. | Compare the total usable capacity and warranty, not just the headline size. |
Do not buy a drive based solely on the patch download number. Plan for the game’s installed footprint, the temporary working peak, operating-system overhead, and future content.

“The update is only a few gigabytes, but Steam refuses it.”
This is the classic staging-space case. Check the library drive’s free capacity and add a larger library location rather than judging the requirement by the download figure.
“I freed space, but Steam still reports the same error.”
Confirm that you freed space on the correct volume. Steam may be downloading or staging on a different drive, and another queued task may consume the capacity again. Restart Steam after clearing the space, then verify the game files if the warning persists.

“I have enough room for the installed game, but not for the update.”
Installed size and update headroom are different requirements. The old files may remain in place until Steam has built the replacement, so move the library to a drive with substantially more free capacity.
“Can I simply delete temporary files?”
Do not remove files from an active Steam library or an in-progress update by hand. Cancel or pause the operation through Steam first, then use normal operating-system cleanup for unrelated files. Manual deletion inside the game directory can turn a recoverable space problem into a damaged installation.
Protect saves and settings before moving or reinstalling
A Steam Library move normally targets game files, but reinstalling can affect local settings or files that are not restored automatically. Before uninstalling:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Close the game and Steam cleanly.
- Back up local save-game folders and configuration files to another drive.
- Note your graphics, control, and mod settings if you want to reproduce them.
- Keep screenshots or custom files that do not belong to the standard installation.
- After reinstalling, restore only the files you recognize and test the unmodded game first.
Why the requirement differs between WARHAMMER releases
Total War: WARHAMMER is a series rather than one identical installation. WARHAMMER I, WARHAMMER II, WARHAMMER III, expansions, language packs, and different patch formats can all produce different temporary requirements. A patch that changes a small set of compressed archives may still require a large rewrite, while another update may need less staging room. The amount also changes as the installed content changes.
For that reason, use the current Steam estimate and the free-space check for your own library as the operational guide. The SEGA Mortal Empires example is useful for understanding the mechanism, but it is not a promise about a later edition or patch.
