Touhou Koumakyou: The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is Touhou Project’s sixth official game and the first made specifically for Windows. Originally released at Comiket 62 on August 11, 2002, it is a six-stage, single-player vertical danmaku shooter in which Reimu Hakurei or Marisa Kirisame investigates a scarlet mist covering Gensokyo. The 2026 release pairs a remastered New Classic version with a preservation-focused Classic version of the 2002 game.

What is Touhou Koumakyou?
Touhou Koumakyou is commonly called The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil in English and Touhou 6 by fans. It is the sixth official Touhou Project title, but it is not the sixth game overall on the same platform: five earlier Touhou games appeared for the PC-98 computer series. Koumakyou is the first official Touhou game released specifically for Microsoft Windows, making it the opening chapter of the main Windows chronology.

The original full release was sold at Comiket 62 on August 11, 2002. Its format is deliberately focused: one player, six vertical stages, two playable protagonists, and patterned enemy fire that must be read and dodged rather than defeated through reflexes alone. The game’s combination of character-driven scenes and demanding shooting became the template that later Windows entries refined.

The Scarlet Mist Incident: story and setting
A summer covered in red mist
During an otherwise peaceful summer in Gensokyo, an unnatural scarlet mist suddenly spreads across the land. It blocks the sunlight, leaving affected areas dark and cold. The phenomenon is not a normal weather event, so the residents who can investigate it turn to the familiar incident-solvers.
Reimu and Marisa investigate
Reimu Hakurei, the Hakurei Shrine maiden, sets out to find the source. Marisa Kirisame, a magician who lives near the Forest of Magic, pursues the same mystery. Their routes lead to the Scarlet Devil Mansion, a conspicuously Western-style estate that stands out in a setting otherwise strongly associated with eastern folklore.
The mansion is home to an eccentric supernatural household, including vampires and a maid. Treating the Western architecture as a tonal contrast is an interpretation, not a separate plot fact: the concrete story role is that the mansion and its residents are connected to the scarlet mist. The investigation becomes a sequence of confrontations with the people and creatures inside, ending with the incident’s source.
How the gameplay works
Six stages of vertical danmaku
Koumakyou is a vertical danmaku, or bullet-hell, shooter. Enemies enter from the upper part of the screen and fire arrangements of bullets that can form arcs, waves, rings, aimed streams, or other patterns. Survival depends on recognizing trajectories, moving into safe gaps, and preserving enough control to respond to the next pattern. The goal is not simply to eliminate enemies quickly; it is to remain alive while damage opportunities appear.

Two characters, two shot types each
Reimu and Marisa each have two equipment or shot-type choices. Their overall identities are distinct:

The two choices within each character change how attacks behave. Some shots home toward enemies, while others reward lining up a direct, high-power attack. Because movement speed, coverage, and damage affect how much room you have to dodge, selecting a shot type is also a choice about risk and positioning, not merely appearance.
Movement, shot, bomb, and Focus Mode
The current release keeps the essential control set: movement, a standard shot, a limited-use bomb, and Focus Mode. Focus slows the character’s movement so you can make fine adjustments while threading through dense patterns. The slower speed is useful for precision, but it also means you should release Focus when a pattern requires a rapid reposition.

Spell Cards and Item Get
Koumakyou introduced Spell Cards, the named attack patterns that turn boss encounters into recognizable challenges. A Spell Card asks you to survive a specific pattern, often without relying on ordinary damage as the only measure of progress. Learning the shape and timing of a card is therefore part of learning the boss.
The game also retained the full-power “Item Get” behavior. When your character reaches maximum power, moving to the top of the playfield lets you collect all on-screen items at once. This creates a deliberate trade-off: climbing to the top can improve collection and scoring, but doing so during an unsafe pattern can put you in danger. Use the behavior when the screen is controlled, not automatically whenever items appear.
Why Koumakyou became a foundation for later Touhou games
The game’s design is unusually explicit about returning to fundamentals. In the afterword to Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, ZUN wrote that “Touhou Koumakyou brings things back to the starting point, by curbing the game systems that change the difficulty in obscure ways, while focusing on the natural fun of dodging bullets at the same time.” That statement explains the game’s enduring reputation: its challenge is meant to come from reading and surviving bullet patterns rather than from opaque progression systems.

Its engine and core approach became a foundation for later Windows-era games, including Perfect Cherry Blossom and Imperishable Night. The familiar combination of selectable protagonists, shot variants, Spell Cards, boss-pattern learning, and dense but legible bullet choreography is already present here. Later games add their own mechanics, but players can recognize Koumakyou as the point where the modern series vocabulary becomes established.

Where it sits in the Touhou chronology
From PC-98 to Windows
Koumakyou follows Mystic Square, the fifth and final PC-98 Touhou game. That makes it a practical historical bridge rather than an isolated reboot: it carries forward the danmaku foundation while moving the series to Windows and introducing the visual and character language most players associate with Touhou.
What comes next
Perfect Cherry Blossom is the next numbered mainline game. Understanding Koumakyou is useful before playing it because the later title assumes familiarity with the same broad structure: choose a character and shot, progress through a sequence of stages, learn named boss patterns, and manage lives and bombs while the screen fills with bullets.
A cast with lasting visibility
The Scarlet Devil Mansion cast helped give the game an unusually durable place in the fandom. Sakuya Izayoi, Cirno, Remilia Scarlet, and Flandre Scarlet are repeatedly noted for continuing popularity. That observation does not establish a universal ranking or a percentage; it simply reflects how prominently these characters have remained visible in fan discussion and derivative works.
New Classic and Classic in the 2026 release
The current product family includes two distinct ways to experience the game. Classic is intended to preserve the original 2002 gameplay as closely as possible. New Classic keeps the scenario and core dodge-and-shoot loop while updating presentation and adding modern options.

Which version should you choose?
Choose Classic if historical fidelity is your priority, you want to see the 2002 presentation, or you specifically want the original gameplay structure and Japanese text. Choose New Classic if readable modern presentation, multilingual support, rearranged music, or an unlimited-lives mode matters more than preserving every original constraint.
The unlimited-lives option changes the pressure of the traditional format, but it does not remove the need to learn patterns. You still have to understand movement, Focus Mode, shot positioning, and bomb timing to make progress efficiently. Conversely, New Classic is not a different story: both versions depict the Scarlet Mist Incident and center on the same characters and mansion.
Release dates, platforms, and editions
The official product page lists September 10, 2026 as the release date. Steam records September 9, 2026, a one-day difference that reflects storefront date conventions rather than two separate launches.

How to start playing Touhou 6
- Pick a version. Select Classic for the original 2002 experience or New Classic for remastered presentation and its additional options.
- Choose Reimu or Marisa. Start with Reimu if broad coverage and easier evasion appeal to you; choose Marisa if you prefer speed and concentrated firepower.
- Select a shot type. Home-oriented shots reduce the need for perfect alignment, while direct high-power shots reward lining up with targets.
- Learn Focus Mode immediately. Use it for precise dodging through narrow gaps, then release it when a pattern demands faster movement.
- Practice each Spell Card as a pattern. Watch where bullets originate, identify the safe lane, and move early rather than reacting after the gap closes.
- Use bombs before control is lost. A limited bomb is valuable when a pattern is no longer readable; preserving it at the cost of a life is rarely a useful form of restraint.
- Use Item Get deliberately. At full power, move to the top to collect items only when the current pattern leaves that route safe.
What makes the game worth playing now?
For newcomers, Koumakyou offers a compact introduction to Touhou’s central loop without requiring knowledge of every later mechanic. Six stages are enough to show how the series escalates pattern density, character dialogue, and boss design. For returning players, Classic provides a way to experience the 2002 structure while New Classic supplies a clearer, higher-resolution presentation and a more forgiving challenge option.
Its historical importance does not replace its playability. The game remains a focused lesson in spatial awareness: bullets are dangerous, but their patterns are information. Once you stop treating the screen as random clutter and begin reading the trajectories, the design goal described in ZUN’s afterword becomes clear—the satisfaction comes from learning how to dodge.
