Buy the edition for the console you intend to use. Nintendo lists a Switch 2-only product and a separate Nintendo Switch product that is supported on Switch 2. Both contain the same New Classic presentation, but their save data and additional content are not compatible. Official pages do not publish enough technical data to prove that either version is faster or sharper.
The answer in one comparison
Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic is not one universal download that changes behavior depending on the console. Nintendo lists two products: a Switch 2 edition that is playable only on Nintendo Switch 2, and a Nintendo Switch edition that is compatible with Switch 2. The listings also state that save data and additional content cannot be shared between the editions.

That makes the buying decision primarily about ownership and compatibility, not a confirmed performance gap. If your library is centered on the original Switch, the Switch listing is the less restrictive purchase. If you want the product Nintendo identifies as made for Switch 2, choose the Switch 2 listing and start a separate save.

Switch 2 edition
Nintendo’s wording is unambiguous: “This product is only playable on the Nintendo Switch 2.” A Switch 2 owner can use this edition on that console, but it is not a purchase intended for an original Nintendo Switch. The listing identifies the New Classic presentation and its included modes, and it also lists Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud support.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The important practical consequence is that buying the Switch 2 product is a commitment to that product’s save and content ecosystem. Nintendo says those saves and additional content are not compatible with the Nintendo Switch version. Moving to the newer console does not turn the two listings into one shared progression file.
Nintendo Switch edition
Nintendo marks the Nintendo Switch product as “Supported” on Switch 2 and explains that “Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch.” This is a compatibility statement, not a promise of a Switch 2-specific graphics upgrade. It tells you that the Switch edition remains the appropriate cross-generation choice when you need to play on an original Switch and also want to use the same product on Switch 2.
The Switch listing contains the same headline New Classic features as the Switch 2 listing. Its compatibility with Switch 2 should not be confused with entitlement to the Switch 2 product: the listings are separate, and their saves and additional content do not interoperate.

What Nintendo publishes
The official descriptions call the presentation “upgraded high-resolution visuals.” They do not provide a frame-rate target, a resolution table, a loading-time measurement, or a side-by-side technical comparison. No named performance statistics are published in the official material covered here.
That leaves one firm conclusion: there is no verified official benchmark showing that the Switch 2 edition runs at a higher frame rate, outputs at a higher resolution, loads faster, or delivers a steadier image than the Switch edition. Any article or video claiming a measured winner needs to identify its own reproducible testing; the Nintendo listings alone do not establish one.
What the absence of numbers means for play
Do not treat the phrase “high-resolution” as a hidden specification. It describes the visual direction of New Classic, but it does not identify a pixel count, refresh target, reconstruction method, or mode-specific output. Likewise, “supported” on Switch 2 does not disclose whether the Switch edition receives additional hardware headroom, a different display mode, or only the same behavior expected on original Switch hardware.

For a bullet-hell shooter, frame pacing and input response matter, but the available official information does not let you assign a numerical advantage to either edition. A responsible comparison therefore separates documented features from open technical questions rather than converting the console generation into an assumed performance score.

How to evaluate independent tests when they appear
If you are comparing future capture footage or measurements, check whether the test identifies the edition, console, display mode, patch level, and measurement method. Useful evidence would include:
- Captured output at a stated resolution and refresh rate.
- A frame-time or frame-rate measurement rather than a visual impression alone.
- Loading tests using the same stage, menu path, and storage conditions.
- Input-latency measurements made with the same controller and display setup.
- Results from the same software update on both products.
Without those details, a sharper-looking recording may simply reflect capture settings, scaling, or a different television mode. The official pages currently support feature comparison, not a definitive performance ranking.
Visual presentation: New Classic and Classic mode
New Classic presentation
Both editions include the New Classic presentation with upgraded high-resolution visuals. This is the modernized way to experience the game: the artwork is presented in the enhanced visual treatment advertised for the release, while the music and quality-of-life options are part of the same package.
Because both listings carry this feature, choosing the Switch 2 product does not automatically grant a different set of New Classic visuals than the Switch product. The documented difference is the platform product itself, not a published list of exclusive visual assets.
Recommended Free Tools
Classic mode
Classic mode preserves the original 2002 gameplay. It is the option for players who want the older game behavior rather than the New Classic presentation’s updated approach. Both products include it, so you do not need to select one console edition to access the historical ruleset.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The coexistence of New Classic and Classic modes is more meaningful than a simple “old versus new graphics” toggle. It gives experienced Touhou players a way to revisit the original gameplay while still offering a presentation designed for current hardware. The listings do not describe separate console-specific rules for Classic mode.
Music and accessibility to practice
ZUN-arranged BGM
Every BGM track is arranged by ZUN in both editions. The music arrangement is therefore shared content, not a Switch 2-exclusive upgrade. If your decision is based on the soundtrack, the platform listings do not show a difference in the in-game BGM selection.
Unlimited-lives mode
Both products include an unlimited-lives mode. That option changes the barrier to learning patterns and stages: you can practice without the standard life limit imposing the same restart pressure. The official descriptions confirm its inclusion but do not specify additional parameters such as scoring rules, stage access, or whether every challenge behaves identically to the standard mode.

Nintendo’s Switch 2 metadata lists TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, along with single-system play. Those labels describe how the Switch 2 product can be used: docked on a television, supported on a tabletop setup, or played as a handheld, with play occurring on one console rather than through a required local network or second system.
The same metadata lists Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud support for the Switch 2 listing. Cloud support can help protect that edition’s save within its own product ecosystem, but it does not override Nintendo’s separate statement that saves and additional content are incompatible between the Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch versions.
The supplied official metadata does not separately state the equivalent mode and cloud details for the Nintendo Switch listing. That is not evidence that a mode is absent; it means the specific listing information available here does not establish it. Treat the Switch 2 labels as confirmed for that product and avoid assuming unlisted specifications for the other one.

Save data and additional content: the migration limitation
Nintendo explicitly says, “Save data and additional content are not compatible between the two versions.” In practical terms, progress made in one product should not be expected to appear in the other, and content associated with one listing should not be assumed to unlock or carry over in the other listing.
This matters most when replacing an original Switch purchase with the Switch 2 edition. The console upgrade does not create a seamless handoff between products. Plan to treat the edition change as a new software purchase with separate progression unless Nintendo later publishes a compatibility change.
The same warning applies in the opposite direction. If you begin with the Switch 2 edition and later install the Nintendo Switch edition for use on another console, the two products are not a shared-save pair. Keep the edition identity in mind before deleting local data, changing consoles, or buying downloadable extras.
What the Deluxe Edition adds
The Deluxe Edition adds the “Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic Soundtrack Player.” It is an application containing more than 30 tracks from the New Classic and Classic versions.
This is an audio-library addition, not a documented graphics or performance upgrade. The official description does not state that Deluxe changes frame rate, resolution, game rules, or save compatibility. Choose Deluxe if the separate soundtrack-player application and its 30-plus-track collection are valuable to you; do not buy it expecting a Switch 2-specific rendering mode.
Update 1.0.6 and platform coverage
Alliance Arts’ version 1.0.6 notice says the update applies across Steam, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PlayStation 5 editions. That establishes broad platform coverage for the update, but the notice information supplied here does not enumerate a feature list or identify a Switch-versus-Switch 2 performance change.

When checking your copy, use the software’s displayed version number and the platform’s normal update process. Version 1.0.6 being available across platforms should not be read as proof that every platform has identical technical output; it only confirms that the notice covers those editions.
Which version should you buy?
Choose the Switch 2 edition when
- You own Nintendo Switch 2 and want the product explicitly sold for that console.
- You are starting fresh and do not need progression from a Nintendo Switch edition.
- You want the Switch 2 listing’s documented TV, tabletop, handheld, single-system, and cloud-save metadata.
- You accept that its saves and additional content will remain separate from the Nintendo Switch product.
Choose the Nintendo Switch edition when
- You need one product that is playable on an original Nintendo Switch and supported on Switch 2.
- You value continuity with an existing Nintendo Switch purchase or save plan, while understanding that this is not the same product as the Switch 2 edition.
- You do not want to pay for a separate Switch 2 listing when the shared New Classic features already meet your needs.
Choose Deluxe when
- You specifically want the separate Soundtrack Player application.
- A collection of over 30 New Classic and Classic tracks is more important to you than a base-edition purchase.
- You understand that Deluxe is described as an audio-content addition, not a stated performance patch.
A practical purchase checklist
- Identify your console. If you have only an original Switch, the Switch 2-only product is not the correct listing. If you have Switch 2, both listings may be relevant, but they remain separate products.
- Check the product name before buying. Confirm whether the store page says Nintendo Switch 2 edition or Nintendo Switch edition; do not rely only on a thumbnail or a console icon.
- Decide whether existing progress matters. Nintendo’s compatibility warning means you should not plan on transferring saves or additional content between the two editions.
- Pick the presentation you want. Both products include New Classic, Classic mode, ZUN-arranged BGM, and unlimited-lives mode, so those features do not decide the platform choice.
- Consider Deluxe separately. Add it for the Soundtrack Player and its 30-plus tracks, not for an unadvertised frame-rate or resolution benefit.
- Update the software. Alliance Arts’ 1.0.6 notice covers Steam, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PlayStation 5; verify the installed version on your chosen platform.
Common misconceptions
“The Switch version automatically becomes the Switch 2 version.”
The listings do not support that assumption. Nintendo presents two products and says their saves and additional content are incompatible. Compatibility of the Switch edition on Switch 2 is not the same as conversion into the Switch 2 edition.
“High-resolution visuals prove the Switch 2 edition is sharper.”
Both editions are described with the New Classic high-resolution presentation. Nintendo does not publish a resolution comparison or benchmark that awards the Switch 2 edition a measurable sharpness advantage.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“Switch 2 must run the game faster.”
No official frame-rate target, frame-time result, or loading measurement is listed. A faster console may suggest possibilities, but it is not a verified result for these products.
“Deluxe is a technical upgrade.”
The documented Deluxe addition is the Soundtrack Player application with over 30 tracks from the New Classic and Classic versions. The supplied official information does not describe a separate rendering or performance mode.
What remains unknown
The official material leaves several technical questions open: the output resolution for each display mode, the frame-rate target, frame pacing, loading times, input latency, and any visual differences produced by running the Switch edition on Switch 2. Those are legitimate subjects for reproducible independent testing, but they should not be filled with guesses.
Until Nintendo or a transparent test publishes those measurements, the defensible comparison is straightforward. The editions share the defining New Classic package, while ownership rules, compatibility, save separation, and the Switch 2-only status of one listing determine which purchase fits your console and progression plans.
