The 2023 Tour de France is most compelling as a race that changed character in a single afternoon. Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar traded attacks and seconds through the first two weeks; then Vingegaard’s dominant stage-16 time trial transformed a close contest into a commanding lead. The yellow-jersey suspense faded, but the edition still delivered memorable mountain stages, a breakaway victory and a dramatic final sprint in Paris.
What happened in the 2023 Tour de France?
The 110th edition ended with Jonas Vingegaard winning overall, Tadej Pogačar second and Jordi Meeus taking the final stage in Paris, according to the official Tour de France recap. The race’s defining story was the duel between its two leading contenders—and how sharply that duel shifted after stage 16.

How close was the Vingegaard–Pogačar contest?
For much of the race, the margin between the two was small enough to make each attack matter. BBC Sport reported that Pogačar’s stage-13 move cut Vingegaard’s advantage to nine seconds. Vingegaard began stage 16 just ten seconds ahead.
Stage 16 changed the general classification
The Passy–Combloux individual time trial covered 22.4 km. BBC Sport reported Vingegaard’s winning time as 32 minutes 36 seconds and described his performance as a decisive blow in the contest. The following mountain stage extended his lead further. From that point, the question was less whether Pogačar could take the yellow jersey than how the rest of the race would play out around Vingegaard’s advantage.

Le Monde’s English-language retrospective reported Vingegaard’s final margin over Pogačar as 7 minutes 29 seconds, describing it as the largest gap between the first and second riders since 2014. The contrast between the narrow pre-time-trial gap and the eventual margin is the edition’s most striking structural feature: a close tactical contest became a much less suspenseful fight for the overall win.
Did the stages offer more than the GC duel?
Yes. The race had distinct stage-level stories beyond the battle for yellow. Michael Woods won on the Puy de Dôme, a climb returning to the Tour route. Carlos Rodríguez secured a stage after a late descent, while Kasper Asgreen won from a four-man breakaway. Meeus’s victory in Paris supplied a final sprint finish rather than another chapter in the overall contest.

That variety helps the edition hold interest after the time trial. The general-classification suspense was diminished, but individual stage outcomes still turned on different kinds of racing: climbing, descending, breakaway tactics and a bunch sprint.
Is the Tour de France 2023 worth watching?
If the appeal is a close contest between elite riders, the first two weeks and especially the lead-up to stage 16 provide the strongest arc. The time trial is essential viewing for understanding why the race changed so dramatically. If the priority is sustained suspense for the yellow jersey through the final week, the large post-time-trial gap is a real drawback. The edition works best as a story of a close duel reaching a decisive turning point, rather than as an evenly contested race all the way to Paris.

What is the Tour de France 2023 video game?
The official Tour de France 2023 game is a cycling simulation for PS4 and PS5, not a broadcast, documentary or replay of the actual race. PlayStation’s listing describes all 21 official stages and features including revised ratings, grupettos and updated rider behavior. It is a way to play through a version of the event, not a substitute for watching the riders’ real performances.

François Thomazeau’s French-language hardcover annual, Livre officiel du Tour de France 2023, was published on October 26, 2023. Fnac lists 136 pages. Its listing showed three five-star customer reviews and online stock exhausted when checked; three reviews are too few to establish broad reader consensus, and stock status can change.
