That gives its roguelite loop more character than a dungeon crawl built only around upgrades, though resource farming may wear on players. TechRadar, reviewing the Nintendo Switch version, praised the pairing and village relationships but judged some farming a slog.
How does Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree play?
Developed by Brownies inc. and published by Bandai Namco, Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree is a 2D isometric roguelite action-adventure. You lead two guardians into each quest: one takes the active Tsurugi role and fights with a sword, while the other supports as a Kagura with a staff. Guardians have individual abilities, and the game lets you unlock or improve skills and forge or upgrade swords as you gather materials.
The loop connects those expeditions to Shinju Village. Between quests, you develop the village and interact with residents; the story unfolds across timelines as Towa and her companions defend the community from Magatsu and his forces. The intended rhythm is therefore not just “run, collect, repeat”: village activity and character relationships sit alongside combat progression, with new skills and equipment feeding into later quests.
What do the Tsurugi and Kagura roles add?
The central choice is which two guardians to bring and which will take each role. A Tsurugi is the main fighter, using a sword; a Kagura supports with a staff. Because guardians have distinct abilities and weapons can be crafted or upgraded, a pair is more than a cosmetic party selection: it shapes the combat roles available during an expedition and the skills you choose to develop.
#1 Best Overall
- Enter a vibrant world filled with beauty and perilous danger
- Fight as a duo in a thrilling roguelite combat
- Forge weapons and bonds that stand the test of time
Bandai Namco’s launch announcement summarizes the setup: “Players choose two Guardians to venture forth on each quest”. The available official descriptions establish the pair-based design and individual skillsets, but do not provide enough detail to rank specific guardians, weapons, or pairings as stronger than others. The appeal is in experimenting with complementary roles, rather than assuming a single best combination.
Does village progression make the runs feel varied?
The village is the game’s counterweight to repeated dungeon expeditions. Interactions with residents reveal their customs and stories, while training, skill development, and sword crafting connect hub time to what you can bring into the next quest. The narrative’s movement across timelines also gives the village layer a story function beyond being a menu between runs.

That structure could make repetition feel purposeful when a new relationship beat or improvement gives the next outing context. It also asks players to spend time gathering materials and tending progression systems. TechRadar’s September 2025 review of the Switch version praised the teamfighting mechanic and emotional relationships with Towa, but said resource farming can become a slog. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee that every player will find the routine repetitive; it is the clearest caution for anyone who dislikes grinding between action sequences.
What are the story, art, and soundtrack like?
Towa is the priestess of Shinju Village, and the guardians are her companions in the fight against Magatsu’s forces. The publisher describes the character art as hand-drawn-style, the scenery as painterly, and the soundtrack as composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto. Those are Bandai Namco’s descriptions; the meaningful distinction in the game’s premise is that character relationships and village stories are part of the progression loop, not merely a framing device for combat.

Verdict: who should play Towa?
Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree is most appealing if you want an action roguelite where the party choice and the lives of its village cast are both part of the reason to keep going. The Tsurugi/Kagura structure gives each run a clear two-character identity, while crafting, skill growth, and relationships give the return to Shinju Village a purpose. The main reservation is the possibility that collecting resources turns that connective tissue into busywork, a concern raised by TechRadar’s Switch review.
