- Fight as a duo in a thrilling roguelite combat
- Forge weapons and bonds that stand the test of time
Bandai Namco’s official guide calls Tsurugi the “Vanguard of the Guardian who wields the Sword of Ablution” and Kagura the “Name for the Guardian entrusted with the Staff of Divination to purify corruption.” In practical terms, one character is the sword-focused fighter while the other supports with staff abilities. What do critics like about the game?
Distinctive character pairings and combat experimentation
The central appeal is building a pair from the guardian roster and combining sword attacks with staff support and individual abilities. Video Chums praised combat variety, while TechRadar found the unusual pairings inventive. The system offers room to experiment, although critics did not agree that its execution was always smooth. Metacritic’s review listings and TechRadar’s review provide examples.

Art, atmosphere and soundtrack
Reviewers highlighted the hand-drawn look, colorful environments and soundtrack as defining parts of the experience. TechRadar praised the presentation, and Bandai Namco identifies Hitoshi Sakimoto as the composer. IGN France also singled out presentation alongside co-operation. These are critical impressions, rather than a guarantee that every player will respond to the style in the same way. Bandai Namco’s official page, Metacritic and TechRadar discuss these qualities.
A village story between runs
Shinju Village and its relationships give the roguelite loop a narrative layer instead of making each run the whole experience. TechRadar described a growing hub and a melancholy story rhythm; Metacritic’s displayed critic excerpts also include praise for the game’s personality and heart. Players looking for character and story between bouts of action may find this structure appealing, while those who prefer uninterrupted combat may feel its slower moments more keenly.

What are the main criticisms?
Repeated arenas and bosses
Repetition is a recurring concern in the review coverage: critics point to similar rooms, arenas or bosses across repeated attempts. Crafting, upgrades and changing guardian pairs provide progression and experimentation, but reviewers still questioned how varied the moment-to-moment encounters feel over time. Metacritic’s listed reviews and TechRadar’s review reflect that reservation.
Busy controls and interruptions to pace
TechRadar found managing Kagura’s controls and switching weapons demanding, and noted that dialogue can interrupt the action. That trade-off is tied to the game’s design: its paired roles and story-forward village add texture, but they also ask more of players than a simpler, continuously fast action loop. Whether that balance works depends on how much control complexity and narrative downtime you want.
Rank #4
Co-op is available, but reviewers questioned the second player’s role
The game advertises local and online co-op, and IGN France highlighted co-operation. However, TechRadar and a review listed by Metacritic raised concerns about how much control or activity the second player receives. Availability does not by itself mean the partnership feels equally engaging for both people; the critical response on that point was mixed. Nintendo’s listing, Metacritic and TechRadar cover the game and reviewer reactions.
Is Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree worth playing?
The critic consensus points to a game with a clear identity, but one whose appeal depends on whether its strengths outweigh its repetition and control demands for you. It is a stronger fit if you want to experiment with paired characters, enjoy colorful presentation and welcome a village-and-relationships story between runs. It is a less obvious fit if you prioritize consistently fresh arenas, simple controls, uninterrupted action or tightly balanced co-op roles.

When comparing it with another roguelite, focus on four questions: how much control complexity its combat asks of you, how varied its rooms and bosses remain across runs, whether you want story and hub progression alongside action, and whether both co-op players get a satisfying role. That is a practical way to apply the critic responses to your own preferences, not a measured ranking against other games.
Platforms and optional extras
The game launched on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. Nintendo’s Switch store page lists a separate Digital Artbook & Soundtrack DLC, an optional add-on rather than an indication that it is included with the base game. Its present availability and any bundle contents should be checked on the relevant store page. See Nintendo’s Switch listing.
