Toy Story 3 Complete Edition Xbox multiplayer: how to set up local co-op

Yes. Toy Story 3 Complete Edition supports two-player local co-op on Xbox. Connect two compatible controllers, start the Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S version, choose Story Mode or Toy Box Mode, enter a playable section, and have Player 2 accept the on-screen join prompt. The game uses a shared or split-screen display. The current Xbox listing does not publish a universal Xbox button for joining, so use the prompt shown by your build rather than relying on a button guide from another platform.

What multiplayer the Xbox edition actually supports

The Xbox product listing identifies Toy Story 3 Complete Edition as a local co-op game for two players. Both people play on the same Xbox with two controllers, and the display can use shared or split screen. The listed Xbox platforms are Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.

The two-player limit is the maximum described by the listing. There is no indication of a three- or four-player mode, so plan the session around one player and one Player 2 controller. Local co-op is available in both of the game’s named modes: Story Mode and Toy Box Mode.

This is a same-console feature. It does not require Xbox matchmaking, a second console, or an online co-op subscription to perform the local setup described here.

What you need before launching

  • An Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console running the Complete Edition listed for those systems.
  • Two compatible Xbox controllers. Plug in or pair both before entering the activity. A second controller must be recognized as a separate player, not merely powered on.
  • A display that can show the shared or split-screen session. The game handles the local two-player presentation once the second player joins.
  • A playable section of Story Mode or Toy Box Mode. The join prompt is expected after an activity loads, rather than on every title or menu screen.

The controller-per-player requirement is also stated in the 2026 Nintendo storefront listing for the same game. That listing is useful corroboration for the physical setup, but it does not establish Xbox button labels. Use the Xbox prompt that appears on your screen.

How to set up local co-op on Xbox

  1. Prepare both controllers. Pair or connect the first controller and confirm it operates the Xbox menus. Pair or connect the second compatible controller and check that the console identifies it as another player. If the second pad is still controlling the first player’s profile or menu cursor, correct that before launching the game.
  2. Start Toy Story 3 Complete Edition. Launch the Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S installation and wait for the main menu. Do not assume that turning on a second controller automatically joins the game; the player must accept the in-game join request.
  3. Choose a mode. Select Story Mode for the campaign’s mission progression, or Toy Box Mode for the sandbox-style experience. The official Xbox feature list says local two-player co-op is available in both.
  4. Enter a playable activity. Continue into a story scene or load the Toy Box area until the game is actively playable. Menus, loading screens, and other non-playable screens may not show the join control.
  5. Watch for the Player 2 prompt. With the second controller active, follow the on-screen instruction to join. The Xbox listing confirms the capability but does not specify one button that applies to every build, so the displayed instruction is authoritative for your installation.
  6. Confirm the second character appears. After acceptance, the session should present the local shared or split-screen view and allow both players to take part. If the game returns to a menu instead, repeat the join action after the activity has fully loaded.
  7. Play cooperatively. The official feature description allows players to swap among Woody, Buzz, and Jessie. Their differing abilities are intended to support cooperative objectives, so coordinate which character each person controls when an objective calls for a particular capability.

Story Mode versus Toy Box Mode

Both modes support the same local two-player feature, but they organize a co-op session differently. Choose according to whether you want directed missions or freer exploration.

Mode Primary purpose How co-op is used Session flexibility Display
Story Mode Linear campaign scenes and mission progression Two players work through the playable campaign section together Progress follows the current mission and its objectives Shared or split screen
Toy Box Mode Sandbox exploration and activities Two players explore and complete activities in the same local session Freer movement and experimentation than the campaign structure Shared or split screen

The listing does not state that either mode adds a separate online service, a larger player count, or a different controller requirement. The practical distinction is purpose: Story Mode gives the session a mission path, while Toy Box Mode gives players more freedom to explore.

Getting Player 2 into the session

The most reliable timing is to connect both controllers before entering the activity, then accept the join prompt once the playable section is visible. This sequence is also the procedure described by a community setup guide, although that guide is practical advice rather than an official Xbox button reference.

If you are waiting at the title screen and nothing happens, continue into Story Mode or Toy Box Mode first. Conversely, if the activity is already running and Player 2 has not joined, pause only long enough to verify that the second controller is still connected and assigned separately, then look for the prompt or its on-screen instruction.

Do not substitute a remembered button from another console. Button labels and prompts can differ across Xbox, Nintendo, and PC versions, and the official Xbox page intentionally does not name a fixed join button.

What the shared and split-screen wording means

Xbox describes the feature as shared/split screen. That means both local players are rendered in the same console session, with the game presenting either a common view or separate portions of the display as the situation requires. It is not a cloud or matchmaking designation, and it does not imply that each player needs a second copy of the game.

The available sources do not publish a resolution, aspect-ratio requirement, split-screen layout setting, or a way to force one presentation over the other. If you need a particular layout, use the options exposed by your current build rather than assuming a setting exists.

Does Toy Story 3 Complete Edition have online multiplayer on Xbox?

The current Xbox feature list advertises local/shared split-screen co-op and does not advertise native Xbox online multiplayer or matchmaking. On that evidence, the supported Xbox method is two people playing on one console with two controllers.

Steam’s 2026 listing separately includes Remote Play Together. That feature can relay a local split-screen session from a PC host to another participant, but it is a Steam capability, not proof of native online multiplayer on Xbox. A PC Remote Play Together session therefore should not be presented as an Xbox online mode.

Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S considerations

The Complete Edition’s current Xbox listing identifies both Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S play. Xbox’s backward-compatibility guidance says offline multiplayer scenarios, including co-op and multiple controllers on one console, are supported when the original game supports them, while also warning that individual functionality can vary by game.

For this edition, the safest approach is to use the current product page’s explicit Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S support and then perform the two-controller test in the game. Do not infer extra features from backward compatibility alone. The listed local co-op capability is the relevant evidence for this title.

Troubleshooting the common setup failures

The second controller works in the Xbox dashboard but cannot join

  • Leave the dashboard and return to the game with the second controller still connected.
  • Check that the pad is recognized as a distinct player rather than simply mirroring the first controller.
  • Enter a playable Story Mode or Toy Box Mode section; the join instruction may not appear in menus.
  • Read the prompt literally and use the button it names. There is no universally published Xbox join button for this edition.

No join prompt appears after the activity loads

  • Confirm that both controllers were connected before entering the activity, then wait for the section to finish loading.
  • Verify that you selected Story Mode or Toy Box Mode, the two modes identified by the Xbox listing as supporting local co-op.
  • Return to the mode selection and load the activity again if the first attempt left the second controller unassigned.

The screen does not look like a two-player session

  • Make sure Player 2 actually accepted the prompt; a powered-on controller alone does not demonstrate that the player joined.
  • Check for the shared/split-screen presentation after the join is accepted.
  • If the game remains single-player, disconnect and reconnect the second controller, then repeat the join sequence in a newly loaded playable section.

You expected online play

Recheck the platform. Xbox documentation and the current listing describe local co-op, while Remote Play Together appears on the Steam listing for PC. Neither source establishes native Xbox online matchmaking for this game.

A quick pre-session checklist

  • Two compatible Xbox controllers are paired or plugged in.
  • The second controller is recognized separately.
  • The Complete Edition is running on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
  • Story Mode or Toy Box Mode has been selected.
  • A playable section has loaded.
  • Player 2 has followed the on-screen join prompt.
  • You are using the button shown by the current Xbox build, not a platform-specific instruction from elsewhere.

Once those conditions are met, Toy Story 3 Complete Edition’s Xbox local co-op is a two-person, same-console session using shared or split screen in either Story Mode or Toy Box Mode.
