Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter is a full remake of the first Trails game, rebuilding the Liberl Kingdom in 3D and pairing its character-driven journey with two combat modes. That combination makes it an inviting entry point for newcomers and a substantial return to familiar ground for series fans. Its main caveat is the commitment: this is a story-rich RPG with extensive side content, not a quick diversion.
What kind of remake is Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter?
Nihon Falcom describes Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter as a full remake of The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky FC, the first chapter in the Trails series. Estelle and Joshua travel across the Liberl Kingdom, now presented in 3D with refined character designs. Falcom says the remake retains Liberl’s picturesque character while including quests and extensive side content. Nihon Falcom’s official game page and Nintendo’s US listing establish the scope and setting; they do not, by themselves, prove how every visual or story change compares in play.

That distinction matters to the review. The remake’s clearest promise is not that it replaces the original’s identity, but that it gives the opening journey a modern 3D presentation and a redesigned combat structure. Whether that will suit a returning player who values the original’s exact feel is a matter of preference; newcomers can approach it as the current version of the series’ first chapter.
How does combat work?
The game offers field-action combat and command battles, with players able to move between the modes. Characters use Crafts and elemental Arts, which the official description says receive dynamic presentation. This gives encounters two different rhythms: direct action in the field and a more deliberate, command-based approach. The modes are an appealing design proposition, though official feature descriptions alone cannot establish the balance of individual fights or how satisfying the transitions feel over a full playthrough.

#1 Best Overall
- Experience the expansive combat system, richly-realized world, and stirring story of the 2nd chapter of the Trails series! By carrying over your clear data from 1st Chapter, you can obtain exciting bonus items that will help you on your journey.
- Overpower your enemies with new Crafts and S-Crafts! Link your characters' attacks during Quick Battles with the new Brave Rush, and make full use of the orbment system for access to Arts.
- Dive into an intricately woven narrative to uncover the conspiracies threatening the Kingdom of Liberl.
- Enjoy a variety of new content in the sequel, including minigames like fishing and poker, cooking with your companions, and fan-favorite characters joining as playable party members.
- Like Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, this remake will have updated English and Japanese voice, and English, German, French, and Spanish text language support.
It is not accurate to describe the remake as only a traditional turn-based RPG: its combat includes both field action and command battles. Players who prefer a more tactical pace have a command-based mode, while field encounters offer a more immediate option.
Is it a good place to start the Trails series?
Yes. As a full remake of the first Trails in the Sky chapter, it gives new players a natural starting point rather than requiring familiarity with later games. Estelle and Joshua’s journey through Liberl is the central path, while quests and side content give the setting room to breathe. The same strengths make it an easy recommendation for returning fans who want to revisit the beginning with a rebuilt presentation.
Potential newcomers should be comfortable with a story-led RPG that asks for sustained attention. TechRadar’s PS5 review, published October 12, 2025, describes the main story plus a good portion of the side content as a substantial time commitment. That is a qualitative warning from one outlet, not a verified completion-time estimate; no precise playtime figure is established here.

- Join Estelle Bright and her adoptive brother, Joshua, as they embark on their journey as junior bracers, determined to climb the ranks of their renowned peacekeeping guild. What begins as a straightforward mission to prove their worth quickly evolves into a gripping adventure of intrigue and peril, as they unravel a conspiracy that threatens the very heart of their homeland.
Should you play the original first?
No prior playthrough is necessary to follow the remake: it covers the first chapter and is designed to stand on its own as that starting point. If you have already played the original, the main reason to choose the remake is its new 3D presentation and combat approach. If you are deciding between versions based on faithfulness, interface changes, or how specific scenes and world details compare, those are points best judged from direct play; the official descriptions establish that this is a full remake, but do not document every difference.

Can you transfer saves between platforms or to Switch 2?
No. Falcom says save data is not shared among the Switch, PS5, and Steam versions. A purchase on one of those platforms should not be treated as a way to continue the same save on another.
Switch owners have a separate paid upgrade path for the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Falcom states that the upgrade pass alone is not playable: you need a Switch 2, the Switch version, and an internet-connected console and eShop for the upgrade process. Nintendo lists both Switch and Switch 2 versions. Check the current regional store pages for the applicable upgrade price and edition details.
What is the review and player response?
TechRadar’s October 12, 2025 PS5 review offers a useful outside perspective on the game’s scale, especially the time commitment involved in combining the story with side content. Steam’s storefront showed 95% positive from 3,007 English-language user reviews and 91% positive from 400 recent reviews when retrieved on October 8, 2026. Those are Steam user-review proportions, not critic scores, and can change over time.

Falcom’s FY2025 supplementary financial presentation, dated November 12, 2025, includes the game among the company’s FY2025 titles. Its reported ¥2,612 million in consolidated sales, up 3.5% year over year, is a company-wide figure—not sales attributed to this game. No game-specific unit-sales total or verified completion-time statistic is established here.
Verdict: who should play it?
Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter is a compelling way to begin the series if you want a story-first RPG set in a richly developed kingdom, with the added flexibility of field-action and command-battle combat. Returning players have a clear reason to look again: Liberl has been rebuilt in 3D, and the combat structure has been reworked. The principal trade-off is not a documented flaw but the scale of the experience: its story and optional content ask for time and attention.
The western release is available on Steam, Switch, and PS5, but language details differ by regional listing and saves do not carry across those platforms. Decide on the edition and language package before committing to a long playthrough.
