The message means the game cannot find an active graphics adapter that exposes the Direct3D 11 feature level it requires—usually Feature Level 11_0 with Shader Model 5.0. Having DirectX installed in Windows does not guarantee that every GPU in the computer supports that hardware capability. Check the adapter’s feature levels in dxdiag first, then update drivers, confirm the game’s requirements, repair software, and try the correct launch option. If no installed adapter reaches the required level, only a hardware upgrade can solve the compatibility problem.
What the DirectX 11 error actually means
Direct3D uses feature levels to describe the functions a video card can provide. Microsoft’s Direct3D documentation explains that each video card implements a defined level of DirectX functionality according to its GPU. A message such as “A D3D11-compatible GPU (Feature Level 11.0, Shader Model 5.0) is required” is therefore an application requirement, not simply a request to reinstall the DirectX files.

Feature Level 11_0 identifies the minimum set of Direct3D 11 hardware capabilities the application expects. Shader Model 5.0 is the shader-programming capability paired with that requirement. A PC may report a current DirectX runtime while its active adapter exposes only lower feature levels, or while the game is using an adapter other than the one you expected.

Read the wording as a precise compatibility check: the game needs a GPU with the stated feature level, a working driver, and an operating environment that meets the rest of its minimum requirements. The exact game or launcher may require more than Feature Level 11_0, so always compare the message with that application’s own minimum GPU, Shader Model, operating-system and memory specifications.

Check the GPU’s feature level in Windows
The DirectX Diagnostic Tool is the first and most useful check on a Windows PC. The System tab tells you about the installed DirectX runtime; the Display tab tells you what each graphics adapter actually exposes.
- Open Windows Search, type
dxdiag, and launch DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Approve the prompt if Windows asks whether it should check digitally signed drivers. - On the System tab, record the DirectX version. Windows 10 and Windows 11 already include the latest DirectX version available for those systems, and Microsoft Support recommends using Windows Update when updates are available.
- Open the first Display tab. If the computer has more than one adapter, additional Display tabs may appear.
- Record the Name of the adapter, the driver model and date, and the complete Feature Levels line. Look specifically for
11_0or a higher level when the game asks for Feature Level 11.0. - If several adapters are listed, identify which one the game is using. A notebook may show an integrated GPU and a discrete GPU; a desktop may show a dedicated card plus a basic display adapter. The game must use an adapter that meets its requirement.
- Choose Save All Information… to create a dxdiag report if you need to contact the game publisher, launcher support or the graphics-card manufacturer.
Do not treat the DirectX version on the System tab as proof that the GPU supports Direct3D 11. The Feature Levels entry on the relevant Display tab is the decisive hardware check.
Why the message appears
The adapter genuinely lacks Feature Level 11_0
Older or entry-level GPUs can expose lower feature levels even when Windows itself contains the current DirectX runtime. A runtime update cannot add circuitry that the video card does not have. If every adapter shown in dxdiag lacks the required level, the software fixes below cannot create support.
Windows is using the wrong adapter
Systems with integrated and discrete graphics can report a capable card while a game starts on the less capable adapter. Verify every Display tab and determine which adapter is active for the game before concluding that the hardware is incompatible.

The graphics driver is missing, outdated or corrupted
A damaged or incomplete driver can prevent a capable card from exposing its normal feature levels. The adapter name may be generic, the driver date may be unexpectedly old, or the game may fail after a driver change. Installing the current driver supplied by the GPU manufacturer and restarting Windows is the appropriate first repair.
The game requires more than the error’s shorthand suggests
Some applications have separate minimum and recommended requirements, a higher Shader Model, a specific amount of graphics memory, or an operating-system requirement. A card that reaches Feature Level 11_0 can still fall below the game’s complete minimum specification.
Game files or supporting components are damaged
A broken installation can produce a graphics initialization error even when the adapter qualifies. Depending on the application’s support instructions, repairing or installing the DirectX runtime and the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable may also be necessary.

1. Install the GPU manufacturer’s current driver
Identify the exact adapter name in dxdiag, obtain the latest driver supplied by its GPU manufacturer, install it, and restart the PC. Recheck the Display tab after reboot. If the adapter now reports the required feature level, start the game without launch switches first so you can establish whether the driver solved the problem.

2. Install pending Windows updates
Open Windows Settings and run Windows Update. Windows 10 and Windows 11 include the latest DirectX version available for each system, so updating Windows is the supported way to receive applicable DirectX components rather than downloading random replacement DLL files. Restart after updates finish, then run dxdiag again.
3. Compare every requirement with your PC
- GPU model and required Direct3D feature level
- Shader Model requirement
- Video-memory requirement
- Windows edition and version
- Processor, system-memory and storage requirements where listed by the game
Use the game publisher’s current minimum specification, not a generic “DirectX 11 compatible” label. Separate capability from performance: meeting Feature Level 11_0 means the API path is available; it does not promise a particular frame rate or image quality.
4. Confirm the intended adapter is selected
On a multi-GPU system, compare the adapter named in dxdiag with the GPU connected to the monitor and the one selected by the game or Windows graphics settings. If the game offers an adapter-selection menu, choose the discrete GPU that reports the required feature level. If it does not, consult the game’s support instructions for its supported method of choosing an adapter. A command-line switch cannot compensate for launching on an incompatible GPU.

If the game’s official support instructions list a DirectX runtime repair or installation, follow those instructions. Do the same for the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. These components can repair missing software dependencies, but they cannot raise a GPU’s hardware feature level.

6. Verify or repair the game files
Use the verification or repair function in the game launcher when it provides one. This replaces damaged or missing files without requiring a complete reinstall. After verification completes, restart the launcher and test the game again.
7. Try the game’s DirectX 11 launch switch
Launch switches select an API path; they do not create support that the adapter lacks. Use the switch appropriate to your launcher:

Enter only the switch supported by that game, close the properties window, and launch normally. If the game still reports an unsupported card, remove the switch and continue with the hardware, driver and requirements checks; forcing DirectX 11 cannot bypass a missing Feature Level 11_0.
8. Use the launcher’s support path when the error persists
Epic Games advises users who continue to receive the message to update drivers, check the minimum requirements and contact the graphics-card manufacturer. Include the saved dxdiag report, the adapter name, Feature Levels line, driver date and the exact game version in your support request.

When software cannot fix the problem
If every installed adapter in dxdiag lacks the required feature level, no DirectX reinstall, Visual C++ package or launch option can add that capability. You need a replacement GPU whose official specifications meet the application’s minimum feature level and all of its other requirements.
Check the whole PC before buying
- Feature level and Shader Model: confirm the candidate card meets the game’s stated minimum, not merely a generic DirectX label.
- Game performance target: distinguish “supports the API” from the resolution, quality preset and frame-rate target you want.
- VRAM: compare the game’s memory requirement with the card’s specification.
- Motherboard slot: verify that the board has the required expansion slot and physical clearance.
- Power supply: check wattage capacity and the required power connectors.
- Case dimensions: measure card length, height and thickness against the case.
- Display outputs: make sure the card provides connectors compatible with your monitor or adapters.
- Operating-system and driver support: confirm support for your Windows version and the game’s software stack.
- Total cost: include any power-supply, cable, adapter or cooling changes required by the upgrade.
NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 460 guide is a historical example of a product explicitly documented as a DirectX 11 GPU with Shader Model 5.0 support. It is not a current buying recommendation: use the present manufacturer documentation for any card you consider because model support and availability change.

- Feature Level 11_0 (or higher) appears and the driver is current: compare the game’s complete requirements, select the correct adapter, repair files and test the launcher’s supported switch.
- The capable GPU appears but the game chooses another adapter: correct the adapter selection before reinstalling DirectX.
- The adapter should qualify but feature levels are absent or unusually low: reinstall the manufacturer driver, restart, apply Windows updates and check dxdiag again.
- No adapter reaches the required level: software cannot solve the incompatibility; choose hardware that meets the game’s documented minimum and your PC’s physical and electrical constraints.
The central distinction is simple: the DirectX version is installed software, while the feature level reported for the active GPU is a hardware capability exposed through its driver. Check that capability first, then work through drivers, Windows, adapter selection, requirements, runtimes, files and launch options in that order.
