Start with this diagnostic checklist
tscrec3.dll is associated with older TechSmith screen-recording software. If tscrec3.dll is missing, Windows is usually failing to start the TechSmith application that originally installed it.
Before changing Windows files, note:
- Which program displays the error. Look at the error window title and the executable named in any details.
- Whether the problem started after an uninstall, update, disk cleanup, backup restore, or antivirus alert.
- Whether the affected application is Snagit, Jing, or another old TechSmith recorder.
- Whether you use Windows 10 or Windows 11 and whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether
tscrec3.dllis missing from the program’s own folder or is present but will not load.
Older records identify this as a 32-bit application DLL associated with TechSmith Screen Recorder Control. It belongs beside the program that uses it, not normally in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the TechSmith application
This is the safest and most likely solution. The installer restores the matching DLL and any other files that must work with it.
Identify the parent program
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps and look for Snagit, Jing, or another TechSmith entry.
- Press Windows + I, then select Apps.
- In Windows 11, select Installed apps. In Windows 10, select Apps & features.
- Search for Snagit, Jing, or TechSmith.
- If you find the program, note its exact name and version if Windows displays one.
If the error appears when opening a shortcut, right-click that shortcut and select Properties. The Target field can identify the executable and installation folder. Do not delete or replace files yet.

Try the built-in repair option
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the TechSmith application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and open the application again.
Not every older TechSmith product exposes a Windows repair button. If Repair is unavailable or does not resolve the error, use the original TechSmith installer or installation media.
Reinstall from an official TechSmith source
- Close the affected program.
- Back up projects, recordings, and custom settings if the application still opens on another computer or in a limited mode.
- Download the matching product and version from your TechSmith account, the TechSmith Download Center, or the original installation media.
- If the old product is not offered, confirm that your license supports an available installer before changing versions.
- Uninstall the damaged application from Settings > Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official installer.
- If the installer is a downloaded file, right-click it, select Properties, and use Unblock on the General tab if that option appears.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation, restart Windows, and test the same shortcut that produced the error.
A successful repair restores the application without a tscrec3.dll message. If the new error says that a different DLL is missing, the installation is still incomplete, the product has additional dependencies, or the old program is incompatible with this Windows release.
If installation fails
TechSmith installation problems can result from pending updates, security software, permissions, or remnants of an earlier installation.
Try these steps in order:
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and install pending updates.
- Restart again.
- Temporarily close other installers and screen-recording utilities.
- Run the TechSmith installer as administrator.
- Check the antivirus or endpoint-security history for blocked installer files.
- If the old program is still listed in Installed apps, uninstall it, restart, and run the official installer again.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. If the installer continues to fail, save the exact error, the product name, the Windows version, and the installer log for TechSmith support.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Security software can remove or quarantine an application DLL after an update or scan. A quarantined file should not be restored blindly.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
tscrec3.dllor the TechSmith application. - Expand the entry and inspect the reported path.
- Restore the file only if it is inside the legitimate TechSmith installation directory and you can verify that the installation came from TechSmith.
- Run a full security scan.
- Start the TechSmith application.
If the file was found in a temporary folder, a download directory, a system folder, or an unexpected application directory, do not restore it. Uninstall and reinstall the parent application from its official source instead.

A restored file that immediately produces a “bad image,” entry-point, or incompatible-application error is probably from the wrong release or was damaged. Reinstall the complete application rather than copying another DLL over it.

Fix 3: Confirm the file path and architecture
A genuine application DLL normally resides in the same directory as the executable that loads it, or in a subfolder used by that application.
To inspect the program:
- Find the TechSmith shortcut.
- Right-click it and choose Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, copy the path shown in Target.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Look for
tscrec3.dll. - Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- On the Details tab, compare the file information with the application installation.
Public file catalogs report a 32-bit Win32 DLL and identify an old file version, but those catalog values are not a universal specification from TechSmith. Different TechSmith releases can contain different matching files. Do not replace a 32-bit DLL with a 64-bit copy.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 can run many older 32-bit applications on 64-bit systems, but compatibility depends on the application. Current versions of some TechSmith products have different architecture requirements from old Snagit or Jing releases. If the program is very old, upgrading to a supported release may be the real fix.
Fix 4: Do not copy tscrec3.dll into a Windows system folder
Do not download tscrec3.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32 or SysWOW64. The file may contain malware, may belong to a different TechSmith release, may have the wrong architecture, or may leave the original installation damaged.

Manual copying is appropriate only in a narrow situation: an administrator has a verified matching copy from the same official installer and the application explicitly expects that file in its own directory. Repairing or reinstalling the parent application remains safer.
Fix 5: Check whether another dependency is missing
Sometimes tscrec3.dll is present, but Windows cannot load it because another library is missing or incompatible.
The wording can help:
- “The program can’t start because tscrec3.dll is missing” usually indicates an absent file or incomplete installation.
- “The code execution cannot proceed” can indicate a missing dependency or incompatible binary.
- “The application was unable to start correctly” or “bad image” can indicate corruption, a mixed-version installation, or a wrong architecture.
- An error naming another DLL may identify the actual missing dependency.
Repair the complete TechSmith installation first. Do not assume that installing the newest Visual C++ Redistributable will restore tscrec3.dll. Microsoft runtime generations can coexist, and the correct runtime depends on the application and installer.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other programs also fail
Windows repair commands are secondary for this problem. They repair protected Windows components and generally will not recreate a proprietary TechSmith DLL that was removed from an application folder.
Use them when several unrelated programs fail, Windows reports system corruption, or System File Checker identifies damaged files.

- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the TechSmith application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. The official procedure is documented in Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.

A display, audio, or capture driver is unlikely to recreate tscrec3.dll, but driver problems can cause a TechSmith recorder to crash after it starts.
Use Device Manager only when the application opens but recording, preview, audio capture, or display capture fails.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and Cameras.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test recording.
Do not remove a device unless its driver is clearly damaged and you have a replacement available. Fix 8: Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. An ordinary application runtime DLL does not become usable merely because it was registered.
Do not run:
regsvr32 tscrec3.dll
unless TechSmith’s instructions for that exact product explicitly require it. Microsoft describes the utility in its regsvr32 command documentation. For this file, repairing the parent application is the normal path.
