TUNIC Review: A Clever Manual, Curious World, and Demanding Combat

TUNIC makes a found, incomplete instruction manual the key to exploring its world. Here’s how its clues and technical combat shape the experience, plus the platforms covered by official listings.

TUNIC is an isometric action-adventure whose most distinctive idea is also its organizing principle: you explore a mysterious world to recover pieces of its instruction manual, then use what those pages show to understand where to go and what the game can do. That makes discovery feel unusually hands-on, though the same indirect clues and technical combat can test players who would rather have clearer directions.

Why the instruction manual is the heart of TUNIC

In TUNIC, the manual is not simply a tutorial delivered before the adventure begins. Its pages are found throughout the world, out of order, and combine maps, illustrations, tips, techniques, and clues. As the collection grows, you build a more complete picture of the place you are exploring and the rules that govern it.

This turns learning into part of exploration. A page can help you recognize a route, suggest a useful technique, or prompt you to revisit something you saw earlier. Rather than pausing the adventure for a conventional explanation, the game makes information itself something to seek out and interpret. The official TUNIC site and Nintendo’s game description both foreground the recovered manual as a defining feature.

How demanding is the combat?

The combat is more involved than a simple button-mashing interlude between puzzles. Official descriptions call it technical and specifically list dodging, blocking, parrying, and striking. Those options make encounters about choosing a response and finding an opening, not just attacking continuously. The game also puts those fights inside an adventure built around exploration and discovery, so combat is one strand of the experience rather than its whole identity.

#1 Best Overall
Tunic - Switch
  • Explore a hostile and intricately-connected world of shady forests, sprawling ruins, and labyrinthine catacombs.
  • Fight mighty bosses deep beneath the earth, high above the clouds, and in places stranger still.
  • Collect the missing manual pages, bursting with hints and original full-color illustrations.
  • Discover hidden treasures to help you on your way.
  • Unearth secret relics, secret techniques, secret puzzles, and… listen, there’s a lot of secrets!

That balance will suit players who enjoy learning an enemy encounter through practice and using defensive moves deliberately. It may interrupt the exploratory mood for players who want a gentler journey or dislike action challenges. Calling TUNIC “soulslike” alone would not tell you enough: the useful expectation is that its fights ask for attention and technique, while the manual, routes, and environmental clues remain central. The Nintendo listing and PlayStation listing name the combat actions.

Does its indirect clueing reward curiosity?

Yes, if you like noticing details, comparing a new page with an old one, and forming your own theories. The manual’s illustrations and maps invite interpretation, and information recovered later can change how you read places you have already visited. That gives exploration a satisfying second layer: progress can come from understanding something you already saw, not only from finding a new path.

The trade-off is that the game does not promise explicit instructions for every question. Players who prefer a direct objective marker or a clearly spelled-out solution may find the gaps frustrating rather than intriguing. The appeal depends on whether you enjoy sitting with a clue and testing an interpretation. If you do, the incomplete manual gives that curiosity a concrete focus; if you do not, its central conceit may feel like friction.
