To turn off parental controls on PS5, sign in as the family manager or an appointed parent/guardian, then go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management. Select the child’s account and change the specific restriction you want to remove. Sony documents separate controls rather than one universal switch that disables everything. Sony’s PS5 parental-controls guide also lists web and app options for managing family settings.
How to disable a specific parental control on PS5
- Sign in to the PS5 with the family manager account, or an account appointed as a parent or guardian for the child.
- Open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child’s account, then choose the control that is blocking what they want to do.
- Adjust that setting and save or apply the change if prompted.
- If the child was playing when you changed the setting, have them sign out and sign back in so the change takes effect.
Sony’s parental-controls instructions describe editing controls individually. The exact controls available can vary by platform and region.
Choose the control that matches the problem
- A game or app is blocked: Review the game and app age level or the allowed-games options.
- Playtime is blocked or limited: Open Playtime Settings for the child’s account and change the limit. Sony’s playtime guide says the family manager or appointed parent/guardian can manage a family member’s playtime.
- Spending is blocked: Change the child account’s Monthly Spending Limit.
- Communication, user-generated content, web browsing, Blu-ray/DVD playback, or online content is restricted: Find and edit the matching control in Family Management, if it is available for your platform and region.
Changing one setting does not necessarily remove another. For example, adjusting a game age level will not itself change the spending limit or communication restrictions.
Manage controls from a phone or browser
You can also manage child-account controls through the PlayStation Family app or on the web under Account Management > Family Management. These are alternative ways to manage account-tied controls, not separate control systems. Sony lists available settings by platform, so an option shown on the PS5 may not appear identically in the app or browser. See Sony’s platform-specific parental-controls list.

Why a setting may not be editable
Check the account’s family role
The signed-in adult must be the family manager or an appointed parent/guardian, and the child account must be a member of that family. If the child is not selectable, confirm both the account role and family membership. Sony describes these requirements in its playtime setup guidance and parent safety guide.
Refresh the child’s session
A change made while the child is playing may not take effect in that session. Have them sign out and sign back in after you update the control.

Distinguish account controls from console restrictions
Child-account parental controls are different from PS5 Console Restrictions, which include protections such as blocking new user creation or guest login. Sony documents console restrictions separately from family settings. A console restriction passcode is intended to stop a child changing controls; Sony’s Canada support page says a forgotten passcode requires resetting the PS5. Do not reset or change that passcode as a substitute for editing the child’s account controls.

Sony says parental controls are tied to accounts, so changing a child’s setting on one device affects that account on its other devices. Playtime limits can apply on both PS5 and PS4 when the child uses both, as explained in Sony’s playtime guidance.
