uac.dll is not a normal Windows system DLL. It is a third-party application or installer file, so the safest fix is to identify the program requesting it and repair or reinstall that program from its official installer.
The filename is also easy to confuse with Windows User Account Control, but uac.dll is not the Windows feature itself. Do not download a replacement DLL and copy it into System32 or SysWOW64.

1. Identify the program requesting uac.dll
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
The correct repair depends on the executable that raised the error. Start by recording the complete message, including its capitalization:
Recommended Free Tools
- “The program can’t start because uac.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because uac.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting uac.dll.”
- “Failed to load UAC.dll.”
- “uac.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
Then identify the affected program.
Check the error window
Look at the title bar and the text around the error. It may identify a game, installer, launcher, security product, or executable name.

If the message appears while opening a shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the executable path, such as a path under
C:Program Files,C:Program Files (x86), or the game’s installation folder.
Do not assume that a path mentioning UAC.dll means the file belongs to Windows. An installer may have extracted it temporarily.
Check Event Viewer
If the dialog disappears too quickly:
- Press Windows key, type
Event Viewer, and open it. - Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- On the right, select Find.
- Search for
uac.dll. - Open matching events and record the Faulting application name and Faulting module path.
Also inspect Windows Security if the problem began after an update, cleanup, or security scan.
Check the file path
A file beside the affected program is usually handled by that program’s installer or repair process. A path resembling %TEMP%ns*.tmpUAC.dll may belong to a temporary NSIS installer extraction.
Treat these locations cautiously:
%TEMP%%AppData%%LocalAppData%- An unexpected
System32orSysWOW64subdirectory - A folder with a randomly named executable or DLL
The filename alone does not prove that a copy is legitimate.
2. Repair or reinstall the parent application
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
This is the most likely solution.
- Close the affected application, launcher, and installer.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the program named in the error.
- Select its menu button or entry.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or the application’s repair option if available.
- Follow the repair wizard.
- Restart Windows and open the application again.
If there is no repair option:
- Uninstall the affected program from the same screen.
- Restart Windows.
- Download a fresh installer from the product’s official website or launcher.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation.
- Start the program from its new shortcut.
For a game, open its official launcher and look for Verify files, Repair, or a similar command. This is preferable to manually replacing a DLL because the launcher can restore the matching files and dependencies.
If the problem concerns Spybot–Search & Destroy, use its official installer and installation guidance. A third-party file inventory has reported an association between a PE32 UAC.dll and Spybot–Search & Destroy 2.6.46, but that does not make every uac.dll a Spybot file.
If the message appears only while installing another program, download that program’s installer again. A failed or incomplete installer may have lost a temporary plug-in during extraction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
An antivirus product may have removed UAC.dll, especially if the file was extracted temporarily by an installer.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Privacy & security on Windows 11, or Update & Security on Windows 10.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event matching the application, installer, or
UAC.dll.
Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error. Restore it only if you independently confirm all of the following:
- The installer came from the vendor’s official source.
- The file is in the expected application or installer location.
- Its publisher and digital signature are appropriate.
- Your security vendor has not identified it as a genuine threat.
If those checks fail, leave the item quarantined. Remove the failed installation, download a newly signed installer from the vendor, and install it again. Do not disable antivirus globally.
If a trusted installer is repeatedly quarantined, submit it to the security vendor for false-positive review rather than copying the quarantined DLL into a Windows folder.
4. Handle an NSIS installer or temporary UAC plug-in
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
The strongest known match for UAC.dll is the deprecated NSIS UAC plug-in. It helps an installer work across standard-user and administrator contexts. The plug-in includes runtime files named UAC.dll; its ANSI and Unicode variants describe text encoding, not 32-bit and 64-bit Windows.
If a third-party installer fails with UAC.dll:
- Close the installer.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- End the failed installer process if it remains listed.
- Restart Windows.
- Delete only the failed installer’s temporary files if Windows allows it.
- Download a fresh installer from the software publisher.
- Run the new installer as administrator.
Do not copy a temporary UAC.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or another application folder. If the publisher packaged the wrong NSIS plug-in variant, only the publisher can correct the installer by rebuilding or repackaging it.
TeamViewer-related installers and GameMaker-generated installers have been observed extracting a temporary UAC.dll, but that does not establish that either product permanently distributes the same DLL. Repair the specific installer or application that produced the message.
5. Check Windows components only when the symptoms are broader
Time needed: 20–40 minutes
uac.dll has not been established as a protected Windows component. Therefore, System File Checker is unlikely to restore it when it belongs beside an application or in an installer’s temporary directory.
Use Windows repair commands when you also see Windows Update failures, damaged built-in applications, system file errors, or broader operating-system instability.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the affected application.
Success means DISM completes without an error and SFC reports that it repaired files or found no integrity violations. If SFC reports that it could not fix some files, save the result and continue with the application’s own repair or reinstall.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make this step difficult to troubleshoot. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing what may be wrong, while repairs require the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix for an app-owned uac.dll.
Also install pending Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
Do not expect Windows Update or SFC to supply a third-party installer plug-in.

Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit applications. Select the installer and application version for the program, not simply the architecture of Windows.
The NSIS plug-in’s ANSI and Unicode variants are also separate from x86 and x64 application builds. A publisher may need to package the correct encoding variant for its installer.

An “either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” message can indicate:
- A damaged or truncated DLL
- A mismatched architecture
- The wrong ANSI or Unicode plug-in
- A non-DLL file renamed with a
.dllextension - A missing dependency required by the DLL
Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages provide Microsoft C and C++ runtime libraries. They do not provide a generic uac.dll. Install the required x86 or x64 package only when the application’s documentation or a separate error specifically identifies a Visual C++ runtime dependency.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Update drivers only if the application has wider graphics or device failures
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A missing uac.dll is normally not a driver problem. Check drivers only if the same application also crashes with graphics, audio, input, or device errors.
To update a driver manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if requested.
For a graphics driver, download the current driver only from the graphics hardware manufacturer’s official support page. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers may be stale, while installation requires the full version; it is optional, and a driver update will not replace an app-owned uac.dll.
Windows Features are not a general DLL repair. Open Settings > Optional features to inspect installed components, but enable a feature only when the application specifically requires it.
8. Scan suspicious copies for malware
Time needed: 20–60 minutes
If UAC.dll appears in an unexpected directory, arrives with a suspicious installer, or is accompanied by unknown startup programs, do not run or restore it.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Run a Full scan.
- If concern remains, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
- Remove or quarantine detected items.
- Reinstall the affected application from its official source.
A randomly named UAC*.dll in a system directory is not automatically the legitimate NSIS plug-in. The path, signature, origin, and surrounding files matter.
Why regsvr32 usually does not fix uac.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal repair command.
Running this is usually unhelpful:
regsvr32 UAC.dll
It may produce an error because the NSIS UAC plug-in is not established as a self-registering COM component. Do not register the file unless the application’s official instructions explicitly require it and identify the correct full path.

Causes of uac.dll errors
| Likely cause | Appropriate response |
|---|---|
| Incomplete application installation or update | Repair or reinstall that application |
| Antivirus quarantine | Verify the source, then restore only if safe, or reinstall |
| Failed temporary installer extraction | Close it, download a fresh installer, and retry |
| Wrong NSIS plug-in variant | Ask the publisher to rebuild the installer |
| Missing dependency of the DLL | Follow the application’s dependency or runtime error |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Malware or tampering | Scan offline and reinstall from a trusted source |
| Recent system change | Use System Restore if reinstalling does not resolve broader instability |
What not to do
- Do not download
uac.dllfrom random DLL repositories. - Do not copy it into
System32orSysWOW64. - Do not choose a file because Windows is 64-bit.
- Do not assume every
uac.dllbelongs to Spybot, TeamViewer, or NSIS. - Do not run
regsvr32as a routine fix. - Do not disable antivirus to force an installer through.
A downloaded DLL can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, be incompatible with the requesting program, or hide the real problem in the installer.
If reinstalling still fails
Collect these details before contacting the software publisher:
- Complete error text
- Requesting executable and full path
- Windows version and build
- Application version
- Whether the failure began after an update or uninstall
- Antivirus detection name and quarantine action
- Installer or launcher log
- Whether the file was in the program directory or a temporary folder
Repeated failure may indicate permissions, Controlled Folder Access, disk corruption, or a broken installer rather than a missing file. If the problem began after a broader software or driver change, use System Restore only when a suitable restore point predates the failure.
FAQ
Is uac.dll part of Windows User Account Control?
No. The name resembles User Account Control, but uac.dll is not established as a normal protected Windows DLL.
Is every uac.dll the same file?
No. The basename is reused by different third-party software and installers. Identify the requesting executable and path before choosing a repair.
Does uac.dll belong to Spybot?
A third-party inventory reports an association with Spybot–Search & Destroy 2.6.46, but that is not proof that every copy belongs to Spybot. Use the official Spybot installer for a Spybot-related error.
Is uac.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Do not generalize. Some indexed samples are PE32, while other builds may differ. The NSIS variants named A and U refer to ANSI and Unicode, not x86 and x64.
Should I download a replacement DLL?
No. Repair or reinstall the program that requested it using the vendor’s official installer.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can SFC repair uac.dll?
Only if a matching copy were a protected Windows component. That has not been established here, so SFC is unlikely to restore an app-owned file.
When should I use System Restore?
Use it when a suitable restore point predates the problem, the application reinstall fails, and broader system instability followed a recent software or driver change.
