Ubisoft closed its Halifax, Nova Scotia, studio on January 7, 2026, affecting 71 positions. The closure came just 20 days after employees were certified as a union, prompting a labour dispute—but it did not, on the available evidence, mean that Assassin’s Creed Rebellion was permanently shut down.

Ubisoft closed its Halifax, Nova Scotia, studio on January 7, 2026, affecting 71 positions and ending the location’s work as part of Ubisoft’s mobile-development network. The closure came only 20 days after Halifax employees were certified as a union, making the timing the subject of a labour dispute.

The closure did not establish that Assassin’s Creed Rebellion was permanently shut down. Ubisoft later said that live operations for the mobile game would continue under a Paris team, although the available record does not confirm an ongoing schedule of new content.

Why the Halifax closure became controversial

Workers at Ubisoft Halifax voted to certify with CWA Canada Local 30111 on December 18, 2025. The union says 74% of eligible voters supported certification. Ubisoft then closed the studio effective January 7, 2026, affecting 71 positions, including 61 union members represented by CWA Canada.

The short gap between certification and closure immediately raised questions about whether the decision was connected to the organizing campaign. CWA Canada said the timing warranted investigation and initiated proceedings before the Nova Scotia Labour Board on January 13.

Ubisoft has denied that the closure was a response to unionization. The company said the decision had been made well before the December certification vote and that it respected employees’ right to unionize. The public record does not establish that a court or the Labour Board found the closure unlawful or retaliatory.

CWA Canada’s account says Ubisoft did not notify the union in advance and that employees learned of the immediate closure during a January 7 town hall. Those are claims made by the union, rather than findings that have been independently established in the available record.

Ubisoft’s explanation: restructuring and declining game revenue

Ubisoft presented the Halifax closure as part of a wider cost-cutting and restructuring programme. In January 2026, the company announced accelerated efforts to streamline its operations, improve efficiency, reduce costs and focus resources on what it described as core value-creating activities.

Ubisoft’s corporate materials placed the Halifax mobile-studio closure alongside the closure of its Stockholm studio and restructuring measures affecting Abu Dhabi, RedLynx and Massive. The company said it was targeting at least €100 million in fixed-cost savings against fiscal 2024–25 by March 2026. It also described an additional €200 million in reductions over the following two years, bringing planned cumulative fixed-cost reductions since fiscal 2022–23 to approximately €500 million.

Those company-wide figures provide context, but they do not prove that Halifax independently failed financially. Ubisoft also told VGC that Assassin’s Creed Rebellion had experienced steadily declining revenue, which contributed to the decision to end live operations and stop producing new content. No game-level revenue figures have been publicly provided in the researched material, so that explanation should be treated as Ubisoft’s account rather than independently verified financial data.

What Ubisoft Halifax worked on

The studio was founded in 2010 as Longtail Studios. Its earlier work included Rocksmith 2014 before Ubisoft acquired the company in 2015 and renamed it Ubisoft Halifax.

After the acquisition, Halifax became associated primarily with mobile development. Public reporting linked the studio to Assassin’s Creed Rebellion and Rainbow Six Mobile, among other work. Its most visible connection was Rebellion, a free-to-play mobile strategy RPG developed through a collaboration involving Behaviour Interactive, Ubisoft Mobile and the Assassin’s Creed brand team.

What Assassin’s Creed Rebellion is

Assassin’s Creed Rebellion launched for iOS and Android on November 20–21, 2018, depending on the market and launch reporting. It is set primarily in 15th-century Spain during the Spanish Inquisition and combines management systems with tactical infiltration missions.

Players build and manage a Brotherhood, recruit and develop Assassins, craft equipment and send teams of three characters into missions. Ubisoft’s description of the game also highlights a roster of more than 100 characters and recurring activities such as Helix Rift events.

That design makes the distinction between a studio closure and a game shutdown especially important. A publisher can close or reorganize the team responsible for a live-service game while moving server operations, support or future planning to another location.

Was Assassin’s Creed Rebellion shut down?

There is no verified evidence in the available record that Assassin’s Creed Rebellion was permanently discontinued when Ubisoft Halifax closed.

Ubisoft’s contemporaneous explanation, as reported by VGC, said declining revenue led it to end live operations and stop producing new content. However, CWA Canada’s later union timeline records a March 12, 2026 announcement that Rebellion live operations would continue under a Paris team.

The safest description is therefore that Halifax closed and responsibility for Rebellion was transferred. The available evidence does not establish a continuing new-content roadmap, nor does it show that Ubisoft has committed to supporting the game indefinitely.

Ubisoft’s current public game page continues to present Assassin’s Creed Rebellion as an iOS and Android title, including its Brotherhood-management systems, character roster, equipment crafting and Helix Rift events. A continuing product page indicates that Ubisoft still maintains a public presence for the game; by itself, it does not prove a particular update schedule, revenue level or long-term server commitment.

What is known about the settlement?

On April 14, 2026, CWA Canada announced that the affected union members had overwhelmingly approved a settlement with Ubisoft. The financial terms were confidential.

The announcement does not disclose whether Ubisoft admitted wrongdoing, what legal claims were resolved, or the precise relationship between the settlement and the Labour Board proceedings. It therefore cannot be described as a ruling that the closure violated labour law.

The bottom line

Ubisoft Halifax was closed on January 7, 2026, affecting 71 positions. Ubisoft attributes the decision to a broader restructuring and cost-reduction programme, while also citing declining revenue from Assassin’s Creed Rebellion. CWA Canada disputes neither the closure’s existence nor the importance of the timing, but it raised questions about the decision’s proximity to union certification and pursued legal remedies.

The most important clarification is that the Halifax closure and the fate of Assassin’s Creed Rebellion are not the same event. The game’s live operations were later reported as continuing under a Paris team. The public record supports a studio closure and an operational transfer, not a definitive claim that the game itself was permanently shut down.
