“UE4 Game Has Crashed: Fatal Error” is a generic crash symptom, not a root-cause code. It can come from damaged game files, a bad configuration or save, an overlay or mod, a graphics-driver issue, a GPU timeout, Windows, or unstable hardware. Start with low-risk repairs—restart, close background tools, verify the installation, and return overclocks to stock—then move to drivers, configuration, prerequisites, and logs. Do not jump straight to random DLL downloads, registry edits, a Windows reinstall, or a new graphics card.
What “UE4 Game Has Crashed: Fatal Error” actually means
UE4 is shorthand for Unreal Engine 4, although some games use a related Unreal runtime. The message only tells you that the game stopped unexpectedly. It does not prove that Unreal Engine itself is broken, that your graphics card has failed, or that one particular fix will work.

Possible causes include damaged or invalid game data, a corrupted save or configuration, running out of memory, a game bug, a GPU timeout, a defective or incompatible graphics driver, a Windows problem, an overlay or injector conflict, unstable overclocking, or failing hardware. The useful evidence is the text immediately before the crash, any exception or GPU error, and the final lines of the game log—not the words Fatal Error in the dialog title.

Quick fix order
- Record the circumstances. Note the game, launcher, Windows version, GPU model, driver version, and whether the crash started after a game patch, Windows update, driver change, mod, or hardware change.
- Restart the PC and close overlays, recording software, RGB utilities, tuning tools, injectors, and overclocking utilities.
- Verify the game files in Steam or the Epic Games Store.
- Remove overclocks and test a lower graphics preset, lower texture quality, disabled ray tracing, and a frame-rate cap.
- Update or roll back the GPU driver using the GPU or computer manufacturer’s official support page.
- Back up and reset the game’s configuration by renaming the relevant folder rather than blindly deleting it.
- Run DxDiag. Use DISM and SFC only when Windows or multiple applications show broader problems.
- Save the crash report and latest logs and send them to the game publisher with precise reproduction steps.
Match the fix to when the crash happens
| Symptom | Higher-priority possibilities | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Crash before the main menu | Damaged installation files, missing prerequisites, incompatible driver, overlay or injector conflict, or corrupted configuration | Disable background tools, verify files, then test the official driver and a fresh configuration |
| Crash while loading one level or save | Damaged asset or save, mod conflict, memory pressure, or a title-specific bug | Test an earlier save or a new game, remove mods, lower textures, and compare the log from a working scene |
| Crash began after a GPU-driver update | Driver regression or a changed graphics feature path | Roll back that driver first instead of changing several unrelated settings |
| Several games crash | Graphics driver, Windows, thermal or power instability, RAM, GPU, or another shared system component | Investigate the shared system layer and hardware stability |
| Only one game crashes | That game’s files, patches, mods, configuration, save data, or a game-specific bug | Prioritize the title’s launcher repair tools, patches, mod compatibility, and publisher support |
This table sets troubleshooting priorities, not confirmed diagnoses. A repeatable pattern and the final log lines should determine what you investigate next.
1. Record the scope before changing anything
Write down the following while the error is easy to reproduce:
- Game title and version, if visible
- Launcher used: Steam, Epic Games Store, or another launcher
- Windows version
- GPU model and current driver version
- Whether the crash occurs at launch, at the main menu, while loading a save, or in a particular area
- Whether every save crashes or only one save
- Whether mods, reshade tools, launch arguments, overlays, or custom graphics settings are active
- What changed immediately before the problem: a game update, Windows update, graphics-driver update, mod installation, overclock, new RAM, or other hardware change
Changing one category at a time makes the result useful. If you update the driver, delete configuration files, reinstall the game, and disable overlays simultaneously, you may get the game working but lose the information needed to identify the cause.
2. Restart and remove common software conflicts
Restart Windows, then launch the game with as little third-party software running as possible. Temporarily disable or exit:
- Steam, Discord, Xbox, GeForce, Radeon, or other overlays
- Screen recorders and performance-monitoring overlays
- RGB and motherboard-control utilities
- GPU, CPU, or RAM tuning software
- ReShade, DLL injectors, trainers, mod loaders, and anti-cheat modifications
- Nonessential security or monitoring software, where safe and permitted by the software’s provider
Do not permanently disable security protection as a general fix. If the game works only after a security product is disabled, restore protection and check that product’s documented game exception process instead.
Use a clean boot if closing programs is not enough
Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs so you can isolate a background conflict. A practical outline is:
- Press Windows+R, type
msconfig, and press Enter. - Open the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, and then use Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager.
- Disable nonessential startup items, close Task Manager, and restart Windows.
- Test the game. If the crash disappears, re-enable services and startup items in groups until the conflicting item is identified.
Record the original settings and restore normal startup afterward. A clean boot is a diagnostic test, not a preferred everyday configuration.
3. Verify the installation
Verification is low-risk and repairs differences between the installed files and the launcher’s expected files. It normally does not reset the game’s user configuration, so it is worth doing before deleting folders or reinstalling Windows.
Steam
- Restart Steam.
- Open Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
Steam may report that some files failed verification because certain files are local configuration files or otherwise expected to differ. Read the result in context; a verification message is not automatically proof that the entire installation is unusable. Steam’s process also does not guarantee that a damaged save or user configuration will be repaired.

Epic Games Store
- Open the Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
- Find the game and select the three dots beside it.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
Epic says its verification checks for damaged files and repairs differences without affecting saved data. It still may not repair a corrupted user-created configuration, a mod, or a damaged save stored separately from the installation.
After verification finishes, restart the launcher and test the game before making another change.
4. Return the graphics and hardware settings to conservative values
If the game reaches its menu, temporarily choose a lower preset. Reduce texture quality, disable ray tracing if available, cap the frame rate, and turn off custom launch options that alter rendering. Remove GPU, CPU, and memory overclocks, including automatic motherboard or graphics-card profiles.
These settings are diagnostic rather than proof of a specific cause. If lowering textures or the frame rate prevents the crash, memory pressure or a GPU timeout becomes more plausible, but the game may still contain a rendering defect or the driver may still be unstable. If the crash occurs only in one demanding scene, note that exact scene and include it in the support report.
Do not treat an improvement after lowering settings as evidence that the GPU is failing. It may simply indicate that the game was reaching a particular memory, timing, or rendering path.
5. Update or roll back the graphics driver carefully
Unreal’s GPU-crash guidance lists running out of memory, Windows Timeout Detection and Recovery events, engine defects, driver defects, operating-system defects, and hardware as possible causes. The correct driver action depends on timing:
- The crash started immediately after a driver update: test a rollback to the previous known-good driver.
- The driver is old, missing, or the problem began without a recent driver change: install the current driver from the GPU manufacturer or, for many laptops and prebuilt PCs, the computer manufacturer.
- The game uses a special OEM graphics configuration: check the laptop or system maker’s exact-model support page before using a generic package.
Identify the GPU and driver version with dxdiag or Windows’ device information before downloading anything. Avoid automatic driver-updater sites and random driver-download pages as the default remedy. They can select the wrong package and make it harder to know what changed. Use an official source and restart Windows after the driver change.
6. Reset the game configuration without destroying saves
File verification repairs installation files, but it usually does not reset settings stored in your Windows user profile. A corrupted graphics setting, input configuration, shader cache, or mod setting can therefore survive verification.

- Close the game and its launcher.
- Back up the game’s configuration folder and save folder to another location.
- Look up the title-specific locations in the publisher’s support documentation or the game’s community support channel.
- Rename the suspected configuration or cache folder, for example by adding
.old, rather than deleting it. - Start the game and allow it to create fresh defaults.
- If the crash stops, restore settings gradually and identify the problematic option. Keep the backup until the game is stable.
Many Unreal-based games store user data below a path similar to %LOCALAPPDATA%[Game or Project Name]Saved, with configuration sometimes under a folder such as ConfigWindowsNoEditor or ConfigWindows. The exact name and location vary by title, and some games use a publisher-specific folder or cloud-save system. Do not delete a generic Config folder blindly. Save files may be in a separate SaveGames folder, and a configuration reset should not be mistaken for a save repair.
For modded games, remove or disable mods using the game’s supported method and test an unmodified installation. A mod can cause a crash even when every official game file passes verification.
7. Check DirectX and Visual C++ prerequisites
Microsoft describes DirectX as a Windows component that games use to communicate with graphics and audio hardware. Run dxdiag to collect DirectX information and review the Display and System tabs for driver and system details. Use Save All Information to create a report that can be attached to a support request.
Games built with Microsoft Visual C++ may also require a matching runtime architecture. Let the game’s installer or publisher documentation determine which Visual C++ runtime is required. Do not download an isolated DLL from an untrusted website or copy a DLL into the game directory; that can introduce malware, create version conflicts, and obscure the original problem.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Use DISM and SFC only for wider Windows symptoms
DISM and System File Checker are not universal UE4 fixes. Use them when several applications malfunction, Windows reports system-file integrity problems, updates are failing, or other system symptoms accompany the game crash.
Open Command Prompt as administrator, run the following command, and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the game again. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, save the result and investigate the Windows repair guidance rather than repeatedly running commands without a diagnosis.

9. Read the crash report and logs before reinstalling
Unreal crash reports can contain a crash identifier, error type, call stacks, system information, build context, log output, and user comments. The dialog title is much less useful than this material.

For Unreal Editor projects, crash reports are commonly placed in a SavedCrashes folder. Packaged games commonly use a path similar to:
C:Users[Windows Username]AppDataLocal[Project Name]SavedCrashes
Logs are commonly stored below a corresponding SavedLogs directory. The actual folder may use the game’s internal project name rather than its store name, and some publishers redirect or package reports differently. If you cannot find it, search the game’s installation and local application-data folders for Saved, Crashes, or Logs.
Before changing more settings, preserve:
- The newest crash report and its crash identifier
- The most recent log from the failed launch
- The final 50–100 lines of the log, if the complete file is too large to attach
- The exact exception, GPU error, or message immediately before the fatal-error line
- A DxDiag report
- The game version, Windows version, GPU model, driver version, and reproduction steps
A CPU call stack can be misleading when the underlying failure is on the GPU. It may show what the CPU was doing when the GPU stopped responding rather than the actual defective operation. Developer-facing Unreal diagnostics such as -gpucrashdebugging and -d3ddebug exist, but they are primarily for developers or advanced diagnosis. They are not ordinary consumer fixes and should be used only when the game developer specifically requests them.

10. Escalate to the right support channel
Contact the game publisher first when only one title is affected. Include the crash report, latest log, DxDiag report, exact reproduction steps, and whether each of these changed the result:
- File verification
- Overlay and mod removal
- Clean boot
- Driver update or rollback
- Stock hardware settings and lower graphics settings
- Configuration reset
Describe whether the game crashes at launch, while loading a particular save, or in a repeatable location. If one save fails but a new game works, say so; that distinction can change the publisher’s investigation.
If every Unreal-based game and other graphics applications also crash, shift attention to the shared layer: driver installation, Windows, temperatures, power delivery, RAM stability, GPU stability, and recent hardware changes. Hardware becomes more plausible when multiple games fail, temperatures or power behavior are abnormal, or a reputable stability test reproduces the problem. The generic UE4 fatal-error dialog alone is not sufficient evidence of hardware failure.
What not to do
- Do not assume the engine is broken because the dialog says UE4.
- Do not assume the GPU has failed because the crash happens during rendering.
- Do not delete the game’s entire configuration or save directory without a backup and title-specific instructions.
- Do not download random DLL files or change registry keys based on a generic internet fix.
- Do not use third-party driver sites as the first driver remedy when an official GPU or OEM package is available.
- Do not reinstall Windows or replace hardware before collecting logs and comparing another game or graphics application.
- Do not present developer-only GPU debugging flags as guaranteed consumer solutions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does “UE4 Game Has Crashed: Fatal Error” mean Unreal Engine is broken?
No. The message is generic and can result from damaged game data, a game bug, a GPU timeout, a driver problem, Windows, unstable settings, or hardware. The crash report and final log lines are needed to identify the likely cause.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDoes a UE4 fatal error mean my graphics card is failing?
Not necessarily. First verify the installation, disable mods and overlays, remove overclocks, and compare the game with other graphics applications. Hardware becomes more plausible when several games fail or a stability test reproduces the problem.
Should I reinstall the game when a UE4 fatal error appears?
Use the launcher’s verification tool first. Steam uses Library > right-click the game > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Epic Games Launcher uses Library > three dots > Manage > Verify.
Where are Unreal Engine 4 crash logs stored?
Crash reports are commonly under a game-specific path similar to C:Users[Windows Username]AppDataLocal[Project Name]SavedCrashes, while logs are commonly under SavedLogs. The exact location depends on the title and publisher.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: “UE4 Game Has Crashed: Fatal Error” is a symptom shared by many unrelated problems. Verify the installation, remove overlays and mods, return hardware to stock settings, test the correct official GPU driver action, and reset configuration only after backing it up. If the problem continues, the crash report and final log lines—not the generic dialog title—should guide the publisher or hardware investigation.
