If uilangres.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the Avast or AVG installation that owns it instead of downloading a loose DLL. uilangres.dll is an Avast/AVG application resource, not a Windows system file, so the safest fix is to restore it through the matching antivirus installer.
What this file actually does
uilangres.dll contains user-interface language resources used by Avast Antivirus and, in some product generations, AVG Antivirus. It normally sits inside the antivirus installation folder and a numbered locale directory, such as:
C:Program FilesAVAST SoftwareAvast1033uiLangRes.dll
C:Program Files (x86)AVGAntivirus1033uiLangRes.dll
The number identifies a language or locale resource folder. Other installations may use folders such as 1031 or 2057. The exact path varies by product generation, language, Windows architecture, and installation method.
This file may be associated with:
- Avast Free Antivirus
- Avast Premium Security
- Older avast. Antivirus releases
- AVG AntiVirus FREE
- AVG Internet Security
It is an application file, not a shared Microsoft runtime. It should not normally be copied to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Older public file listings include 32-bit builds such as 5.0.545.0 and 5.0.589.0. Later Avast and AVG installations also have 64-bit variants. A file with the correct name can still be wrong for your product, language, architecture, or release.
Common causes and symptoms
| What changed or appears on screen | Likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Error appeared after an Avast or AVG update | Incomplete or damaged application update | Repair the antivirus |
| Error appeared after installation stopped or rolled back | Missing language component | Run Repair or reinstall |
| Avast or AVG quarantined the file | Deletion or false positive | Verify the path and inspect Quarantine |
| Error appeared after cleanup software ran | A product file was removed as unused | Repair or reinstall the antivirus |
| The file exists but still will not load | Wrong architecture, locale, dependency, or damaged installation | Use the matching installer |
| Several unrelated Windows programs also fail | Broader Windows, disk, or malware problem | Check Windows health and security |
regsvr32 reports an error |
The file is not designed for COM registration | Do not register this DLL |
The message may mention 1033UILangRes.dll, 2057/UILangRes.dll, AvastUI, or a path under the Avast or AVG folder. Examples include “failed to load language DLL,” “uiLangRes.dll could not be found,” and “the application has failed to start because uiLangRes.dll was not found.”
The locale number helps identify which language resource the program expected. It is not a replacement filename and does not tell you to download a DLL into a Windows folder.
Fix 1: Repair Avast
Repair is the most likely solution for a missing or damaged Avast language resource. Avast says that repair can restore broken components, although some customized settings may be reset.

- Select Installed apps. On some Windows 10 systems, select Apps and Features.
- Find Avast Free Antivirus or Avast Premium Security.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- If Avast Setup opens, choose Repair rather than removing the product.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows if Avast requests it.
- Open Avast and confirm that its main window loads without the DLL error.
If selecting Uninstall immediately removes the program without showing Avast Setup, skip to the clean reinstall section.
Older Control Panel interface
- Press Windows key, type
Control Panel, and open it. - Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click Avast.
- Select Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair in Avast Setup.
- Complete the wizard and restart Windows.
If Repair completes but the same message returns, do not copy a random replacement file into the reported folder. Continue with a clean reinstall.
Fix 2: Repair AVG
AVG uses a similar setup process.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Find AVG AntiVirus FREE or AVG Internet Security.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Select Repair in the AVG setup window.
- Finish the repair and restart Windows.
- Launch AVG and check whether the error has disappeared.
On older Windows versions, open Control Panel > Programs and Features, right-click AVG, choose Uninstall/Change, and select Repair.

If AVG is not listed, or its setup window will not open, use the official AVG installer to reinstall the product.
Fix 3: Reinstall Avast or AVG from the official installer
A clean reinstall replaces the complete application, including the correct language resource, dependencies, architecture, and product files. Use the official Avast or AVG installer, not a standalone DLL download.
Before removing the antivirus, save any settings or subscription information that you need. If another security product is installed, temporarily remove conflicts according to that product’s instructions.
Avast
- Try normal Repair first.
- If that fails, download the current Avast installer from Avast’s official site.
- If ordinary uninstall works, remove Avast from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- If uninstall fails, use Avast’s official removal utility,
avastclear.exe. - Restart when prompted.
- Avast’s removal utility may run in Safe Mode. Choose Remove & Reinstall if available, or Remove only if you intend to install manually afterward.
- Restart Windows again.
- Run the current Avast installer as an administrator.
- Allow setup to select the correct language and product components.
- Restart if requested, then open Avast.
AVG
- Download the current AVG installer from AVG’s official website.
- Remove AVG through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or through Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- If removal fails, use AVG’s official removal procedure.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the current AVG installer by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
- Complete setup and restart.
- Confirm that AVG opens and that the error no longer appears.
If both an old Avast installation and AVG are present, remove the unused or damaged product before reinstalling the one you intend to keep. Leftover registrations can cause the wrong executable to launch.
Fix 4: Check Avast Quarantine carefully
If Avast removed uilangres.dll, restoring it may resolve the problem, but restoration is not automatically safe. First confirm that the file came from the installed Avast or AVG directory and that the product installation is genuine.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Avast.
- Select Menu.
- Open Quarantine.
- Locate the relevant file.
- Check its original path. A path inside the installed Avast or AVG directory is more plausible than a copy from a temporary folder.
- Select the file’s More options menu.
- Choose Restore only when the file’s provenance is clear.
- Start Avast and test the application.
Use Restore and add exception only when you have verified that the file is genuine and belongs to the installed antivirus. If the file is repeatedly quarantined, do not repeatedly whitelist it. Reinstall from the official vendor installer or submit the uncertain file to the vendor’s threat-analysis service.
A fresh reinstall is generally preferable when the original file is missing, corrupt, unsigned, or repeatedly detected.

Fix 5: Update the antivirus application
A failed application update can leave the main executable present while a language resource is incomplete.
For Avast:
- Open Avast.
- Select Menu > Settings.
- Open General > Update.
- Check the application update section.
- Select Check for updates.
- Allow the update to finish.
- Restart Windows and test Avast.
If Avast will not open, run Repair or reinstall instead. Updating a damaged installation from inside the application may not be possible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor AVG, open the product and use its update control. If the interface cannot load, use the current AVG installer to replace the damaged installation.
Fix 6: Do not use a random DLL download
Avoid websites offering individual copies of uilangres.dll. A loose file may contain malware, have the wrong publisher signature, use the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, belong to a different Avast or AVG release, or contain the wrong language resources.
Do not:
- Copy the file into
System32 - Copy it into
SysWOW64 - Place it beside an unrelated executable
- Replace a German or UK locale resource with an English one
- Assume that an old 32-bit build works in a current 64-bit installation
- Rename another DLL to
uilangres.dll
The safe source is the official Avast or AVG installer for the product currently installed. The installer restores the complete component set rather than one filename.
Fix 7: Do not register this file with regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components. A language-resource DLL is not normally a COM server.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Therefore, this is not a valid general repair:
regsvr32 uilangres.dll
It may produce an error because the file has nothing to register. That error does not prove that Windows is missing a runtime. Repair or reinstall Avast or AVG instead.

Use regsvr32 only when the developer specifically documents registration for a different DLL and provides the correct path and architecture-specific command.
Fix 8: Check Windows health only for broader problems
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not reliably reconstruct a third-party Avast or AVG installation file, so they are not the primary fix for this error.
Use them when other Windows components are also failing, Windows behaves abnormally, or system corruption is suspected.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Try Avast or AVG again.
If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not clear an Avast-owned DLL. If either command reports repairs but the antivirus still fails, repair or reinstall Avast or AVG.
When manually hunting through Windows repair results and repeating DISM or SFC without knowing what changed becomes the problem, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing detected issues; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling Avast or AVG remains the definitive fix for this application file.
Fix 9: Investigate drivers only if other software is affected
A display, storage, or chipset driver is not a normal cause of an Avast/AVG language-resource error. Check drivers only when Windows has wider symptoms, such as crashes, device failures, or repeated filesystem errors.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the symptom.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a recently updated device:
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties > Driver.
- Choose Roll Back Driver if the option is available.
- Restart and test.
When checking dozens of devices manually is slowing down a broader repair, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the antivirus that owns uilangres.dll.
Fix 10: Check malware, disk, and restore options
Malware or another security product can interfere with an antivirus installation, although that is less common than a damaged update or incomplete install.
- Run a full scan with a reputable security product.
- Check whether other files are disappearing or failing.
- If multiple applications report corruption, check the disk for errors using the drive manufacturer’s diagnostic utility or Windows’ drive error-checking interface.
- If the problem began immediately after an installation or update, consider System Restore:
- Press Windows key, type
Recovery, and open **Recovery Control Panel`. - Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore can roll back applications and settings, but it is not a replacement for reinstalling an antivirus product.

If the error remains after reinstalling
Collect these details before attempting further changes:
- The exact product named in the error
- The complete path shown
- The locale number, such as
1033or2057 - Whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the message appears at startup or only when opening Avast or AVG
- What changed immediately beforehand
- Whether an old Avast or AVG entry remains installed
- Any Event Viewer or antivirus setup-log errors
To inspect the Windows architecture, open Settings > System > About and read System type. Do not use a historical 32-bit file simply because its version appears in a search result. The matching installer must supply the correct architecture and language component.

Is uilangres.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Avast and, in some versions, AVG. It is not a normal Windows component and should not be placed in System32.
Can I download only uilangres.dll?
That is unsafe and often ineffective. The correct file depends on the antivirus release, locale, architecture, and installation path. Repair or reinstall the product from its official installer.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually not. uilangres.dll is an Avast/AVG language resource, not one of those Microsoft redistributables. Install or repair a runtime only when the exact error identifies a different missing dependency.
Will SFC fix this error?
Usually no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while uilangres.dll belongs to an antivirus installation. Use SFC and DISM for broader Windows corruption, then repair or reinstall Avast or AVG.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why does regsvr32 fail?
Because this resource DLL is not normally a COM or ActiveX server. Registration is not the same as restoring a missing application component.
Is restoring the file from Quarantine safe?
Only after verifying its original Avast or AVG path and authenticity. If there is any doubt, reinstall the antivirus instead of creating a permanent exception.
What is the safest first step?
Use Repair from Avast or AVG’s own setup program. If Repair cannot restore the component, remove the damaged installation with the vendor’s official utility and install the current product again.
