“fhcat.dll is missing from your computer” means Windows cannot find a protected File History component. fhcat.dll is the Microsoft File History Catalog Library, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, game dependency, or ordinary third-party application DLL.

Which fix applies to you

Use this order:

  • The file is missing from Windows folders: install Windows updates, then run DISM and SFC.
  • The error appeared after an update or upgrade: restart, check Windows Update, and repair the component store.
  • Defender quarantined the file: inspect Protection History before restoring anything.
  • The message says “specified module could not be found”: the missing item may be a dependency, such as ESENT.dll, rather than fhcat.dll itself.
  • The file exists but will not load: verify its location, architecture, signature, and Windows servicing state.
  • Only File History fails: repair Windows first, then check the backup destination, permissions, filter drivers, and File History configuration.
  • You copied a DLL from another computer or download site: remove that replacement and restore the Windows-managed copy through servicing.

Do not begin by downloading fhcat.dll or running regsvr32.

What fhcat.dll does and where it belongs

File History is a Windows backup feature that saves copies of personal files to an external drive or network location. fhcat.dll supports the catalog used by that feature.

On 64-bit Windows, the native copy normally belongs in:

%windir%System32

The 32-bit copy used by 32-bit processes on 64-bit Windows belongs in:

%windir%SysWOW64

These names are easy to misunderstand. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files.

Historical Windows releases contain different builds and file sizes. Do not choose a replacement by version number, filename, or size alone. The correct file must match the Windows build, architecture, servicing level, and Microsoft signature.

To check your architecture:

  1. Press Windows key + I.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Look at System type.

You can also check the file location in File Explorer by entering %windir%System32 in the address bar, then searching for fhcat.dll. On 64-bit Windows, also check %windir%SysWOW64.

What the error messages mean

These messages are common variants reported by Windows or applications:

The exact wording is not an official exhaustive Microsoft error list. Treat the wording as a clue, then verify the file and repair Windows.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

An incomplete update or upgrade can leave Windows components at mismatched servicing levels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Check for updates again after restarting.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install available updates and restart.

Windows 10 reached the end of Microsoft support on October 14, 2025. If this is a Windows 10 machine, plan a supported upgrade or replacement rather than relying on an unserviced installation.

Try the operation that produced the error again. If fhcat.dll is still missing, continue with DISM and SFC.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source for protected files.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to finish. It may appear to pause at a percentage for some time. Do not close the window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward and test File History or the application that displayed the error.

Possible SFC results include:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: no protected-file corruption was detected.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again after checking Windows Update, restart, and run SFC again. If it still cannot repair files, use System Restore or a supported Windows repair option.

If you want help automating the repetitive work of checking system health, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention, while repair actions are handled by its full version. It is optional, and DISM plus SFC remain the Microsoft-supported repair path.

Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender Protection History

Antivirus quarantine is a possible cause, particularly after a security scan or malware cleanup.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections involving fhcat.dll or files in the Windows directory.

Do not restore a file merely because its name is fhcat.dll. A copy found in an untrusted download folder or an application directory is not automatically genuine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore a quarantined file only when you have verified that it is the genuine Microsoft Windows component and the detection is a false positive. If you cannot verify it, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead. Run an offline security scan if malware damage is possible.

Fix 4: Check the file, path, architecture, and signature

If a copy exists, confirm that it has not been placed in the wrong directory.

Check these locations:

%windir%System32fhcat.dll
%windir%SysWOW64fhcat.dll

On a 32-bit Windows installation, SysWOW64 is not present, and the native system files are generally under System32.

Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab if it is available. A genuine system copy should have a valid Microsoft signature. A valid signature supports authenticity, but a signed file in an unexpected application folder does not prove that it is the correct copy for your Windows build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not overwrite a file with one selected by size or version alone. Windows servicing is safer because it obtains a component appropriate to the installed system.

Fix 5: Investigate a missing dependency

The phrase “specified module could not be found” can indicate that a dependency required by fhcat.dll is absent. Historical metadata associates the component with Windows libraries including ESENT.dll.

Do not download ESENT.dll separately. Run DISM and SFC first, because they can repair both the main file and protected dependencies.

If the error continues:

  1. Record the complete error text.
  2. Note whether fhcat.dll exists in System32 or SysWOW64.
  3. Check whether other Windows features are failing.
  4. Review the System and Application logs in Event Viewer.
  5. Look for events at the exact time the error occurred.

A dependency problem is more likely when fhcat.dll is present, signed, and in the expected directory but the process still reports that a module cannot be found.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine repair

regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide the appropriate COM registration exports. It is not a general-purpose “install DLL” command.

fhcat.dll is a Windows system component, and Microsoft does not confirm that manually registering it repairs File History. Running the wrong regsvr32 command can produce another error or register a mismatched file without fixing the underlying corruption.

Use DISM and SFC instead. Only use regsvr32 when documentation for the specific component explicitly requires registration and identifies the correct architecture.

Fix 7: Check drivers and filter software only if File History still fails

File History can be affected by storage drivers, filesystem filter drivers, backup software, encryption products, or security software even after Windows repairs the DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To inspect drivers:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Disk drives, Storage controllers, and relevant device categories.
  4. Right-click a device and select Properties.
  5. Review the Driver tab and the driver provider.
  6. Use Update Driver only when you have a known compatible source.
  7. Do not uninstall a storage controller or disk device unless you have a recovery plan.

If the problem began after a driver update, open the device’s Properties > Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver when available. Also temporarily test whether recently installed backup or security software is interfering. Do not disable protection permanently.

When several machines need driver checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while driver installation is handled by its full version. It is optional, and a driver change is relevant only when the evidence points to a storage or filesystem conflict.

Fix 8: Repair File History itself

If DISM and SFC complete successfully but File History will not turn on:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Search for File History.
  3. Confirm that the backup drive is connected and recognized.
  4. Try a different USB port or reconnect the network destination.
  5. Check that the destination has free space and is accessible.
  6. Review permissions on the destination.
  7. Disconnect other backup software temporarily for testing.
  8. Check Event Viewer for File History, storage, or filesystem errors.

A File History catalog or destination problem is different from a missing DLL. Do not keep replacing fhcat.dll when the component is present and Windows integrity checks are clean.

If the failure began immediately after a system change, run System Restore:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select a restore point from before the problem.
  3. Review affected programs and drivers.
  4. Start the restore and let Windows restart.

If no restore point works and system corruption is broad, use Microsoft’s supported recovery or in-place repair options. Back up important files first.

Why DLL download sites are unsafe

Do not download fhcat.dll from a random DLL website or copy it from another computer. That approach can provide:

  • Malware or tampered code
  • The wrong Windows architecture
  • A file from an incompatible Windows build
  • A mismatched servicing level
  • A copy with no valid Microsoft signature
  • A replacement that hides the real dependency or component-store problem

There is no Microsoft fhcat.dll redistributable download. The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, and supported Windows repair media or recovery options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Installing Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET is generally unrelated to this file. fhcat.dll belongs to Windows File History.

FAQ

Is fhcat.dll malware?

No. fhcat.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component named File History Catalog Library. A file with that name outside the Windows directories still needs verification, because filenames can be copied or spoofed.

Should I copy it into System32?

No. Restore it through Windows servicing instead. Manual copying can create an architecture or build mismatch.

Is fhcat.dll part of a game or third-party program?

It is part of Windows File History, not a normal game or application runtime. Reinstalling an unrelated program is unlikely to restore the correct Windows component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Windows say a module is missing when fhcat.dll exists?

The process may be missing a dependency, or the existing DLL may be damaged or incompatible. Run DISM and SFC, then inspect the full error and event logs.

Should I enable Windows Features or reinstall a runtime?

Not as a first step. File History is a Windows feature, but enabling unrelated Windows Features or reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET does not normally repair fhcat.dll.

What should I report when escalating?

Provide the Windows version and build, 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, exact error text, full path of any fhcat.dll copy, digital-signature result, whether Defender quarantined it, the preceding update or software change, and the final DISM and SFC results. Include relevant CBS or Event Viewer findings rather than only saying that the DLL is missing.
