uir.dll Missing: Trace the Old Girder Plugin on Windows

By VGSources Team 10 min read

uir.dll is usually an old Girder infrared-control plugin, not a standard Windows file. If Windows reports that uir.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the application that requested it rather than copying a random DLL into a system folder.

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before changing Windows files, record these details:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Which program shows the error? Look for Girder, an infrared-remote utility, home-automation software, or an older media-center application.
  • When does it appear? Does it happen when launching an application, during Windows startup, after an antivirus detection, or after migrating to a new PC?
  • What is the complete wording? Common reports include “The program can’t start because uir.dll is missing from your computer,” “Error loading uir.dll,” “Failed to load uir.dll,” and “The specified module could not be found.”
  • Is the application 32-bit or 64-bit? Older Girder-based software is often 32-bit, even on 64-bit Windows.
  • Does the error identify a file path? The requesting executable and the location Windows expects can distinguish an old Girder plugin from a different file with the same name.
  • Was the file quarantined? Check Windows Security or your installed antivirus before downloading anything.

The description associated with this file is Girder UIR/IRA/IRman/CTInfra/Hollywood+ Plugin, and public file indexes associate it with Bessems-IT uir. That association points to an application plugin, not a Windows component.

The safest fix: repair or reinstall the parent application

The most likely cause is an incomplete Girder or plugin installation. The application may have been removed, partially upgraded, cleaned up, or copied without its plugin directory.

1. Find the application that requests uir.dll

  1. Open the error window and note the program name.
  2. Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
  3. Check the Target field for the executable path.
  4. Open File Explorer and inspect the program’s installation folder.
  5. Look for a plugins, plugin, or similarly named directory.
  6. Search the application folder for uir.dll.

Do not assume that a copy in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is correct. Girder plugins normally belong in the relevant application or plugin directory.

If the error appears during startup:

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for Girder, an infrared utility, or the old application named in the error.
  4. Right-click the entry and select Disable.
  5. Restart Windows.

If disabling the entry stops the message, uninstall the obsolete parent application or restore it properly from its original installer.

2. Use the application’s repair option

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Search for Girder, the infrared utility, or the application named in the error.
  4. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  5. Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what is available.
  6. Complete the repair and restart the application.

On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the program, and choose Modify or Repair if provided.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For older installers:

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the relevant application.
  5. Choose Repair or Change if available.

If there is no repair option, uninstall the application and reinstall it from the original installer, trusted installation media, or the software vendor’s archive. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator when the software is old or writes to protected folders.

3. Check the application’s own file-repair feature

Some older programs include a launcher or maintenance utility with options such as:

  • Verify files
  • Repair installation
  • Restore plugins
  • Reset configuration
  • Install infrared support

Run that feature before manually copying files. Afterward, launch the application again. A successful repair should remove the uir.dll message and allow the program to reach its normal startup screen.

If the same message remains, note the executable path and the plugin directory. The installer may have restored the file to a different directory than the one used by the application.

Do not download a random uir.dll

Avoid DLL download sites and manually downloaded copies. A file with the same name can belong to a different product, use a different architecture, contain a different build, or be modified. It may also leave the original application incomplete, so the error can return with another missing dependency.

Do not place an arbitrary file in:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native system directory and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components. Neither is a universal DLL drop folder.

The safe source is the original Girder-based application installer or a trusted archive supplied by the application’s vendor. If you no longer use the old application, removing its startup entry and uninstalling it is safer than forcing the DLL back into Windows.

Fix 2: check antivirus quarantine

Security software may remove an old plugin because legacy DLLs can be unsigned, uncommon, or bundled with obsolete software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows Security steps

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security.
  3. Choose Windows Security.
  4. Open Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Look for an entry involving uir.dll or the parent application.
  7. Review the detected file path and action.

Restore the file only when all of these are true:

  • The file came from a legitimate installation.
  • The path is inside the expected application directory.
  • You recognize the parent program.
  • The antivirus entry is consistent with a false positive or unwanted quarantine.
  • You can reinstall the application from trusted media if needed.

Do not disable antivirus merely to obtain a DLL. If the file was found in a temporary folder, download directory, email attachment, or unrelated system directory, leave it quarantined and scan the computer.

After restoring a known-good file, launch the original application. If the antivirus immediately quarantines it again, stop and reinstall the application from trusted media instead of creating an exclusion.

Fix 3: match the application and plugin architecture

A 32-bit application cannot use an arbitrary 64-bit plugin, and a 64-bit application cannot use an arbitrary 32-bit plugin. A public listing claiming that a DLL is “x64” does not prove that it matches your Girder build.

To identify the application architecture:

  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  2. Select Details.
  3. Right-click a column heading.
  4. Choose Select columns.
  5. Enable Platform if your Windows version provides that column.
  6. Check the application’s process.

You can also inspect the installer documentation or the executable’s properties. Do not infer compatibility from the version of Windows alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the old application is 32-bit, install its original 32-bit plugin package. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application may still need x86 runtime components. Do not replace the plugin with a similarly named file from another program.

If the application has no compatible build for your current Windows version, use a supported replacement or remove the obsolete software. Repeatedly forcing an old plugin into a modern application can cause more startup errors.

Fix 4: determine whether a dependency is missing

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that uir.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named file but failed to load a dependency required by it.

First, reinstall the parent application. This is safer than trying to guess which runtime is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the next error specifically names a Microsoft runtime, install the architecture required by the application from Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. A 32-bit application commonly requires the x86 package even when Windows is 64-bit.

For an older application that explicitly reports missing legacy DirectX components, use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer. DirectX is not normally required just because this Girder plugin is missing.

Do not install a long list of runtimes without an error identifying them. That adds unnecessary software and does not repair a missing application plugin.

Fix 5: update Windows, then repair Windows components

Windows Update will not normally recreate a third-party Girder plugin, but updating Windows can improve compatibility and repair servicing problems.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Test the affected application again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC when Windows component corruption is suspected. Open an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows after both commands complete.

DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. These commands are useful when Windows itself is damaged, but they are unlikely to recreate uir.dll because the Bessems-IT/Girder file is not identified as a protected Windows component.

If you prefer help identifying damaged components instead of repeatedly interpreting command output, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is handled by the full version. For this specific error, reinstalling the Girder-based application remains the definitive fix when its plugin is missing.

Fix 6: check drivers only when the application needs them

An infrared device or older automation utility may depend on a device driver. However, updating a driver will not normally recreate a missing Girder plugin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Device Manager only if the application also reports that its remote receiver or hardware is unavailable:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories such as Human Interface Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or the vendor-specific category.
  4. Look for a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device.
  6. Select Update driver.
  7. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  8. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

For a driver that was recently broken:

  1. Right-click the device in Device Manager.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Driver tab.
  4. Choose Roll Back Driver if the option is available.
  5. Restart Windows.

Use the hardware manufacturer’s driver package when Windows cannot find a suitable driver. Do not download a DLL to compensate for a missing device driver.

Manually hunting through driver versions can be slow, especially when several devices have stale packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show driver issues, with driver installation handled by the full version; it is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the Girder application that owns uir.dll.

Fix 7: treat the NVIDIA name collision separately

Some NVIDIA driver inventories also contain a different, much larger file named uir.dll. That does not prove that the Girder plugin belongs to NVIDIA.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare:

  • The executable that reports the error
  • The full path Windows names
  • The folder containing the DLL
  • Whether Girder or an infrared utility is installed
  • Whether the problem began after an NVIDIA driver installation

If the error points into an NVIDIA driver directory, repair or reinstall the NVIDIA driver through the normal vendor-supported process. If it points into an old Girder or application directory, repair that application instead.

Never choose a replacement based only on the filename.

regsvr32 is usually not the answer

Do not run this as a general repair:

regsvr32 uir.dll

regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a missing file, repair a damaged plugin, or make an incompatible DLL work.

If the DLL is present and the original application documentation explicitly instructs you to register it, use the command from that documentation and match the tool architecture to the DLL. Otherwise, a message such as “DllRegisterServer was not found” usually means registration is not applicable, not that the file is necessarily damaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if Windows Features are involved?

Windows Features are relevant only when the error names a Windows component or the application documentation specifically requires one.

To inspect them:

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter:
optionalfeatures
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Review the listed features.
  3. Enable only the feature required by the application.
  4. Select OK and restart if prompted.

Do not enable random legacy features to fix uir.dll. The file is associated with an application plugin, so reinstalling the parent program remains the correct path.

When to stop repairing the old application

Stop trying to restore the DLL when:

  • You no longer use the application.
  • The error appears only from a leftover startup entry.
  • Antivirus repeatedly detects the file from an untrusted location.
  • The installer cannot run on your Windows version.
  • The application requires obsolete hardware that you no longer own.
  • Reinstalling creates additional compatibility errors.
  • No trusted original installer is available.

Remove the old startup entry, uninstall the parent application, and restart Windows. If the software is needed, preserve its installer and configuration before testing it in a compatible environment.

FAQ

Is uir.dll part of Windows?

No reliable evidence identifies the Bessems-IT/Girder version as a Windows component. It should not be restored to a Windows system directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which program installed uir.dll?

Usually Girder or software that bundled an old Girder infrared plugin. The exact requesting program must be confirmed from the error, executable path, or startup entry.

Where should uir.dll be located?

It should be in the relevant Girder or application plugin directory, according to how that application loads plugins. Its correct location is not automatically System32 or SysWOW64.

Will SFC restore uir.dll?

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It is useful for Windows corruption, not for recreating a third-party application plugin.

Should I register uir.dll?

Usually no. Run regsvr32 only when the original application explicitly requires registration and documents the procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does reinstalling produce another missing DLL error?

The restored plugin may depend on an older runtime, another plugin, or a compatible application build. Record the new error and install only the specifically identified Microsoft runtime or application component.

Is a file named uir.dll from an NVIDIA folder the same file?

Not necessarily. The filename collision can refer to a separate NVIDIA driver file. Always compare the full path and requesting executable.

Final escalation checklist

If the error remains, capture these details before seeking further help:

  1. The complete error text.
  2. The application or executable name.
  3. The executable path.
  4. The path where Windows expects uir.dll.
  5. Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  6. Your Windows version.
  7. Antivirus quarantine history.
  8. Whether repair or reinstall restored the file.
  9. Any new dependency named after reinstalling.
  10. Whether the error appears at startup or only when launching the application.

That information identifies the process requesting uir.dll, which is the key to choosing the correct repair instead of guessing with unrelated DLL copies.
