How the numbered games connect
Ultima I–III: the Stranger and the early threats
The opening trilogy links its central conflicts directly. In Ultima I, the Stranger defeats Mondain. Ultima II makes Minax’s revenge the next danger, and Ultima III follows with Exodus, their offspring. These games are connected by the consequences of one victory leading into the next crisis. If you want the early saga as a complete arc, play all three in order: the later threats depend on the history established by the earlier conflict.

Ultima IV–VI: the Avatar and Britannia
Ultima IV changes the series’ emphasis: the central task is not simply defeating a succession of villains, but mastering the Eight Virtues and becoming the Avatar. This shift is why it is useful to think of IV as the start of a new story block rather than as a direct continuation of the Stranger’s three-game sequence. It establishes the Avatar and the Virtues that shape the later Britannian games.
Ultima V brings the Avatar back to a Britannia under oppressive rule, with Lord Blackthorn and the Shadowlords central to the corruption. Ultima VI presents conflict with the Gargoyles, tied to the Codex, and makes peaceful resolution a possibility. The protagonists and setting remain linked through the Avatar’s continuing role, but each game changes the immediate problem. Taken together, IV–VI form a deliberate continuation of the Avatar’s Britannian story: first the Virtue quest, then a corrupted realm, then a confrontation in which understanding the opposing side matters.
Ultima VII–IX: the Guardian arc
The final numbered stretch follows the Avatar into conflicts shaped by the Guardian. The Black Gate centers on the Fellowship and the Guardian’s plans. Serpent Isle continues from the preceding game as the Avatar pursues Batlin; it belongs immediately after The Black Gate in the story sequence. In Pagan, the Guardian strands the Avatar on another world, so the setting changes even as the larger conflict continues. Ascension returns the Avatar to Britannia for a confrontation with the Guardian and corrupted Virtues.

That means VII–IX are connected by an ongoing antagonist and the Avatar’s journey, rather than by staying in one place. If your main interest is the Guardian storyline, do not skip from The Black Gate straight to Pagan without recognizing Serpent Isle as the intervening continuation. The numbered release years place these games in 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1999 respectively, with Serpent Isle as the second part of VII’s sequence.

Do you have to play every game?
Release order is the safest choice if you want the whole main story, because the numbered games preserve both character continuity and changes in the world. But the franchise is not one uninterrupted plot in which every release is an essential chapter. A useful way to think about it is as three linked story blocks: the Stranger’s early trilogy, the Avatar’s Virtue-era story, and the Avatar–Guardian arc. The continuity is broad rather than perfectly uniform; the series changes focus as it moves from one block to another.
- For the early saga: play I, II, and III in sequence to follow Mondain, Minax, and Exodus.
- For the Avatar’s Britannian story: begin with IV, then continue through V and VI.
- For the Guardian arc: play VII, then Serpent Isle, VIII, and IX. Serpent Isle is the second part of VII’s story sequence, not a separate numbered chapter to skip over.
If choosing a starting point, decide what you want from the series. Starting with I gives you the original linked trilogy and its chain of threats. Starting with IV begins the Avatar and Eight Virtues era. Starting with VII enters the Guardian arc later in the numbered continuity. These are story-based entry points, not promises that a later game explains every earlier event. For the clearest complete reading, begin at I and proceed through the table.
Story dependence is only one practical consideration. Readers may also care whether they want the original trilogy or the Avatar/Virtue era, how much they tolerate older interfaces, or whether they would rather explore a side genre or an alternate continuity. The continuity references establish the narrative order, but they do not establish modern compatibility, remake status, current storefront availability, or comparative quality. Check those practical details separately for the particular edition you are considering; they should not be confused with the story chronology.
Where the side games fit
Akalabeth: World of Doom
Akalabeth is a precursor sometimes called Ultima 0 and grouped with the Age of Darkness titles by the Codex. It is useful background for the series’ beginnings, but it is not one of the ten numbered mainline entries. Its presence in a broader franchise history does not change the numbered release order above.

Worlds of Ultima and Ultima Underworld
The Codex’s broad single-player chronology includes The Savage Empire, Martian Dreams, and both Ultima Underworld games. They are connected franchise stories, but they are side branches rather than numbered chapters in the main sequence. The available continuity classification does not make them prerequisites for understanding the ten-game order above. In other words, they can matter to readers exploring the wider single-player setting, but they do not need to be inserted between the numbered Avatar chapters to follow the main story.
Ultima Online and other separate branches
Ultima Online is the notable alternate-continuity case: the Codex timeline places its branch after Ultima I, after which it follows a different continuity. It should not be inserted between the numbered single-player entries as though it were the next chapter of the Avatar’s story. This is the clearest answer for anyone asking whether the online game belongs to the same sequence: it is part of the franchise, but the reference timeline treats it as a branch rather than the next step in the numbered plot.
The Codex places Escape from Mt. Drash, Runes of Virtue I and II, Lord of Ultima, Ultima Forever, and Shroud of the Avatar outside its normal single-player context. They are franchise releases, but the continuity reference does not treat them as installments in the numbered story sequence. Treat these as separate entries unless you are looking specifically into the product or its own continuity.

Compilations are not new story entries
Ultima Trilogy I–III, Ultima Trilogy IV–VI, The Complete Ultima VII, Underworld Series, and Ultima Collection are bundles of games already listed or discussed here. A compilation’s release does not add another point to the story chronology. When comparing lists, distinguish a bundle’s publication or release from the original games it collects; otherwise the same story installments can appear to be new entries in the sequence.

Why Britannia’s chronology can feel unusual
The games’ release years should not be read as a direct calendar for events inside the fiction. The Codex timeline notes that many centuries may pass in Britannia for each Earth year. This helps explain why the numbered sequence can move through large changes in the world even though its games were released over a comparatively short stretch. Its timeline also classifies Ultima Online as an alternate branch, rather than an event that simply occurs after the later Avatar games.
The Codex is a specialist fan reference, not a newly issued publisher canon policy. Its page describes its scope as including “all the canon single-player Ultima games”; that wording belongs to the Codex’s own timeline reference and should be attributed to it, not presented as a new EA statement. EA’s official catalog groups Ultima releases, including numbered games, Ultima Online, and Underworld, but does not establish story chronology or original release dates. For continuity and release-year context, the numbered order above follows the Codex’s classification; exact day-by-day dates across platforms and regions are not established here.
