Ultimate DOOM Walkthrough: Episode Routes, Secrets and Version Tips

This walkthrough covers the four-episode classic campaign commonly called Ultimate DOOM: Knee-Deep in the Dead, The Shores of Hell, Inferno and Thy Flesh Consumed. The campaign has 36 maps: eight regular maps and one secret map in each episode. The 100% route described by JimmyGGS91’s 2015 Steam community guide targets every kill, item and secret where the map allows it, on Ultra-Violence through the Doomsday Engine. That is the guide’s method, not an official Bethesda route or a guarantee that every port reports completion identically.

If you are looking for it in Steam, Bethesda renamed Ultimate DOOM to DOOM + DOOM II. The current package contains much more than this campaign, so select the original DOOM episode set rather than assuming every included expansion belongs to the walkthrough below.

What this walkthrough covers

The route is limited to the classic DOOM campaign. It does not cover DOOM II’s main campaign, Master Levels for DOOM II, TNT: Evilution, The Plutonia Experiment, No Rest for the Living, SIGIL, Legacy of Rust or the newer deathmatch maps. Bethesda lists all of those in the combined release, but they are separate content from the four episodes here.

The source for route-level advice is JimmyGGS91’s community guide, titled “The Ultimate Doom (100%) walkthrough.” Because that guide is community-authored and dated 2015, treat its door order, secret triggers and combat suggestions as a reference rather than official documentation. The map index is reliable for identifying the campaign’s episode and secret-map structure; exact directions should be checked against the guide’s page for the map you are playing.

Choose the edition before you start

Bethesda says the Steam and GOG versions of the current combined release include the original DOS versions of DOOM (1993) and DOOM II. The enhanced release adds modern conveniences and additional content, but it is not save-compatible with the former original release.

Need Most relevant option Important qualification
Play the current enhanced package DOOM + DOOM II Includes the classic games plus the listed expansions and new content.
Use the former Steam release Steam “previous-re-release” beta Bethesda’s FAQ says Steam users can opt in through Beta Participation; menu names can change.
Install the former GOG build Original version in your GOG library Availability depends on your account and the edition you own.
Continue an old save Remain on the original release Bethesda states that original-version saves do not carry over to the enhanced release.
Use Microsoft Store or PC Game Pass Check your ownership history Bethesda says original access depends on prior ownership; an already-installed original PC Game Pass copy remains in the library.

The enhanced version supports campaign selection and level select, which makes it practical to replay a missed map. If preserving an existing save matters, decide which executable you will use before changing versions.

Quick-save and 100% preparation

Bethesda Support documents a platform-mapped quick save: “Pause the game, and press R/R1/RB to immediately save where you are, and unpause the game.” To load it, pause and press L/L1/LB. Check your platform’s control mapping if those labels do not match your controller. Make a normal manual save as well; a quick-save slot is a convenience, not a replacement for a series of fallback saves.

  1. Start on Ultra-Violence if you want to follow the guide’s stated difficulty.
  2. Before opening a major door or stepping into a new arena, quick-save and create a separate manual save at the beginning of the map.
  3. Use the automap to identify unexplored corridors, disconnected rooms and suspicious dead ends.
  4. Track three independent totals: kills, items and secrets. A map can show 100% kills while still missing a secret or item.
  5. When a percentage is short, search the current map before exiting. The enhanced release’s level select lets you revisit a map, but it cannot retroactively change a completed save from another release.

Episode 1: Knee-Deep in the Dead

This episode contains E1M1 through E1M8 and the secret map E1M9. Use the map-specific pages in JimmyGGS91’s guide for the exact switch sequence and secret-sector locations; the checklist below keeps the four questions that matter on every map in one place without inventing coordinates that are not established here.

Map Objective Navigation and keys Hazards and secrets
E1M1 Complete the opening map and leave through its exit. Learn the automap; record each colored key and door you encounter. Use it to verify your control setup and establish a save routine; check every side room before exiting.
E1M2 Clear the map while preserving the kill, item and secret targets. Mark locked doors on the automap and return after finding their keys. Recheck closets and optional branches after major switches; compare totals before exit.
E1M3 Reach the exit without abandoning unexplored areas. Use landmarks on the automap rather than relying on a single corridor route. Damaging floors and ambush openings deserve a quick-save; search dead ends for secret triggers.
E1M4 Finish the standard map and confirm all counters. Separate “visited” from “fully searched” rooms; colored doors may lead back to earlier areas. After each switch, revisit newly opened spaces before committing to the exit.
E1M5 Complete the map at your selected difficulty. Keep a mental key order, but follow the guide’s page for the verified sequence. Do not assume a cleared room is safe: closets can open after a pickup or switch.
E1M6 Collect remaining items and reach the exit. Use the automap to spot symmetrical or isolated sectors that you have not entered. Save before unfamiliar lifts or drops; secret sectors often require returning to an earlier landmark.
E1M7 Clear combat spaces and finish the required progression. When a route seems blocked, search for a switch rather than forcing a jump or movement trick. Check side rooms after combat and verify the secret count before leaving.
E1M8 Finish the episode’s final regular map. Follow the guide’s route for the end-map progression and avoid skipping optional branches. Make a separate save before the final arena or boss sequence; clean up exploration before triggering the exit.
E1M9 (secret) Enter and complete the episode’s secret map when its access condition has been met. Use the guide’s E1M9 instructions rather than assuming every port uses the same trigger behavior. Secret-map completion is separate from finding the entrance; verify kills, items and secrets inside the map.

Episode 2: The Shores of Hell

E2M1–E2M8 are the episode’s regular maps, with E2M9 as its secret map. Carry forward the discipline from Episode 1, but do not assume that a key, switch or secret behaves the same way in another map. The guide’s index identifies the maps; its individual pages are the authority for any route detail attributed to it.

Map Objective Navigation and pickups Hazards and secret check
E2M1 Clear the map and locate the exit. Map every locked door and return when the matching key is found. Save before opening an unfamiliar area; inspect alternate branches for missed items.
E2M2 Reach 100% targets where possible. Use automap gaps to identify unopened rooms rather than retracing only the main path. After a switch changes the layout, rescan previous rooms for new openings.
E2M3 Finish progression without rushing the exit. Record key colors and the doors they serve; use the guide for exact order. Ambush closets and damaging terrain make a pre-fight save worthwhile; verify secrets last.
E2M4 Collect reachable items, defeat enemies and exit. Revisit central junctions after each major pickup or switch. Do not count a visible item until you can confirm it increased the item tally.
E2M5 Complete the regular map. Follow verified guide directions for lifts, doors and one-way progress points. Keep a fallback save before irreversible drops or large encounters.
E2M6 Finish the map with all attainable counters. Search isolated automap sectors and check every colored-door branch. Clear combat before exploring risky side paths, then compare the secret percentage.
E2M7 Reach the exit after completing optional exploration. Use landmarks to avoid bypassing a switch-controlled return route. Save before the final progression trigger and perform a last item sweep.
E2M8 Complete the episode’s final regular map. Use the guide’s map page for the final sequence; do not infer it from another episode. Separate the final battle from cleanup: search for secrets before activating the end sequence when possible.
E2M9 (secret) Complete the secret map after unlocking access. Confirm how your edition exposes the secret exit and follow the guide’s instructions. Finding the entrance is not completion; check all three counters within E2M9.

Episode 3: Inferno

The third episode runs from E3M1 to E3M8, followed by E3M9. Treat damaging surfaces, isolated platforms and one-way drops as reasons to save before experimenting. Those are general play safeguards; the guide’s map pages supply any specific route or trick.

Map Goal Route discipline Completion check
E3M1 Clear the map and exit. Mark every inaccessible door and return after collecting its key. Search side chambers before the final exit and record the secret tally.
E3M2 Complete all attainable counters. Use the automap after each switch to detect newly opened sectors. Quick-save before hazardous crossings and verify items manually.
E3M3 Progress through the map without skipping optional areas. Follow the guide for any non-obvious switch or lift order. Recheck the route behind you after major combat.
E3M4 Reach the exit with the map explored. Distinguish a dead end from a secret sector by testing suspicious walls only where the guide indicates. Do not leave while a counter is short unless you have documented an edition-specific exception.
E3M5 Finish the regular map. Keep separate saves before risky traversal and before the final encounter. Confirm kills, items and secrets from the status display.
E3M6 Complete progression and optional exploration. Use landmarks and colored-key notes to prevent circular wandering. Search newly accessible rooms after every major switch.
E3M7 Clear enemies and find the exit. Consult the guide for route-specific timing or positioning rather than improvising. Perform the item and secret sweep before the exit is triggered.
E3M8 Complete the episode’s final regular map. Reserve a separate save for the final battle and follow the guide’s progression order. Finish exploration before the concluding sequence whenever the map permits.
E3M9 (secret) Complete the secret map. Use the edition-appropriate secret-exit instructions in the guide. Track E3M9 independently; its percentages do not replace missed work in another map.

Episode 4: Thy Flesh Consumed

E4M1–E4M8 form the fourth episode, with E4M9 as the secret map. This episode is still part of the classic campaign even though the current combined package presents many later add-ons alongside it. Start each map with a fresh save and use the same three-counter method.

Map Objective Navigation and pickups Hazards and secrets
E4M1 Complete the map and reach its exit. Log colored keys and revisit locked branches after each pickup. Save before major fights and inspect every optional room.
E4M2 Achieve the map’s attainable 100% totals. Use the automap to find unexplored sectors, then consult the guide for exact triggers. Check the status screen before leaving.
E4M3 Finish progression and exploration. Do not bypass switch-controlled returns; follow the guide’s sequence. Search behind newly opened routes and preserve a fallback save.
E4M4 Clear the regular map. Separate key collection from secret hunting so neither is forgotten. Recheck ambush areas after combat and confirm secret percentage.
E4M5 Reach the exit after collecting available items. Mark every branch on the automap and return after progression changes. Use quick-save before risky movement or an irreversible drop.
E4M6 Complete the map’s kill, item and secret targets where possible. Use the guide’s map-specific route for non-obvious doors and switches. Do a full perimeter sweep before the final exit.
E4M7 Clear the map and finish optional areas. Keep a written key-and-door note if the layout becomes difficult to retrace. Verify counters after the last combat encounter, not only at map start.
E4M8 Finish the episode’s final regular map. Follow the guide’s final-map directions and save before its concluding encounter. Complete exploration before ending the map whenever possible.
E4M9 (secret) Complete the fourth episode’s secret map. Use the guide’s instructions for reaching E4M9 in your chosen port. Check all three counters inside the secret map and keep its completion separate from E4M8.

How to recover when a percentage is missing

Kills are below target

Retrace every branch, closet and arena rather than restarting immediately. Some enemies are revealed only after a switch, pickup or door transition. If the map still reports fewer kills, compare your edition and difficulty with the guide’s assumptions; enemy counts can differ between ports or settings.

Items are below target

Use the automap to find isolated rooms and platforms, then revisit areas opened late in the map. A visible pickup may be easy to overlook during combat, so sweep the floor after the room is safe. Confirm the item counter before exiting.

Secrets are below target

Finding a suspicious wall is not the same as activating a secret sector. Follow the guide’s map-specific trigger instructions and check whether your port displays the same secret percentage. If you finish the map short, use level select or reload a pre-exit save rather than assuming the next episode will correct it.

What is included in the current DOOM + DOOM II release?

Bethesda’s release notes list DOOM, DOOM II, Master Levels for DOOM II, TNT: Evilution, The Plutonia Experiment, No Rest for the Living, SIGIL, Legacy of Rust and a new deathmatch map pack. Legacy of Rust contains two episodes with 16 maps total and was credited as a collaboration among id Software, Nightdive Studios and MachineGames. Those additions explain why the product menu is larger than the four-episode route in this article.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bethesda describes the originals this way: “Originally developed by id Software in 1993, DOOM and its 1994 follow-up, DOOM II, pioneered and popularized the first-person shooter.” That is the publisher’s description, not a completion statistic or an independent historical measurement.

Practical decision: original behavior or enhanced convenience?

  • Choose the enhanced release if you want campaign selection, level select and access to the expanded package.
  • Choose the original executable if you need to preserve an old save or specifically want the former DOS-era release behavior.
  • Use the same map IDs and episode structure either way, but verify controls, secret behavior and completion counters in your port.
  • For a strict 100% Ultra-Violence run, keep separate saves and record the edition, difficulty and map totals so a later version change does not create confusion.
