Ultra Street Fighter IV has two prominent community rollback-netcode projects, but they are no longer equally active: SF4Enhanced says development stopped on 4 October 2026 and points players to SF4 Ember Netplay. Ember’s latest release in the supplied information is v0.9.9, published on 27 September 2026. Both target the Steam version of the game; neither is an official Capcom update, and rollback cannot guarantee a stable match on every connection.

What happened to Ultra Street Fighter IV’s rollback mods?

SF4Enhanced and SF4 Ember Netplay are separate community projects aimed at improving online play in the Steam edition of Ultra Street Fighter IV. SF4Enhanced’s repository now says it is no longer maintained, identifies version 1.2.1 as its final build, and calls Ember the community standard. It says its public lobby servers remain online for existing users but does not promise how long they will remain available. SF4Enhanced project repository

Ember is therefore the current project to look at, based on SF4Enhanced’s own notice and the v0.9.9 release information available as of 7 October 2026. Release and server status can change, so check the project pages before installing or arranging a match. SF4 Ember Netplay v0.9.9 release notes

How do the two projects differ?

Area SF4Enhanced SF4 Ember Netplay v0.9.9
Current status Development stopped on 4 October 2026; version 1.2.1 is identified as the final build. The project says its public lobbies remain online for existing users, without a duration guarantee. Project repository Release v0.9.9 was published on 27 September 2026. Its notes describe it as experimental, unofficial netplay. Release notes
Game and platform requirements Steam edition of Ultra Street Fighter IV; both players need the same build. Project repository Steam edition, Windows 10 or later, x64, and Microsoft Visual C++ x86 runtime. The release notes describe limitations and manual update steps for Linux under Proton or Wine. Release notes
Rooms and play features Release documentation describes rollback, adjustable input delay, lobby codes, spectators, peer-to-peer connections with automatic server-relay fallback, and server selection. Project repository Release notes describe private room invitations, spectators, and leaving and rejoining a room. Everyone in a room, spectators included, must use the same build. Release notes
Connection and recovery details Relays are listed in Spain and Germany, which may mean higher ping for players farther away. Direct peer-to-peer play can avoid that relay routing when available. Project repository The v0.9.9 notes describe handling for a short connection interruption: a fight can pause for up to eight seconds before resuming or ending. The notes also list rollback fixes for Yang’s Seiei Enbu, Yun’s Genei Jin, and Rose’s Soul Illusion. Release notes
Setup detail documented Current online-play instructions specify Fixed frame pacing on both PCs. Instructions have changed between releases, so use the guidance for the build being played. Project repository Follow the release instructions for the installed build; the v0.9.9 requirements include the Visual C++ x86 runtime. Release notes

What rollback changes—and what it cannot fix

Rollback netcode attempts to keep play responsive by predicting game states and correcting them when the delayed inputs arrive. It can make online fighting feel better than waiting for every input, but it does not remove the effects of distance, latency, packet loss, or an unstable connection. Relay routing can also affect ping; SF4Enhanced’s documentation specifically lists relay locations in Spain and Germany.

#1 Best Overall
Ultra Street Fighter IV - PlayStation 3
  • Five new characters including Poison and Hugo and Elena and Rolento and an all-new unannounced character join the fight complete with their own unique play styles
  • Six new battle environments - Pit stop 109 and Mad Gear Hideout and Cosmic Elevator and Blast Furnace and Half Pipe and Jurassic Era Research Facility have been added for even more visual variety
  • Rebalanced gameplay - direct fan feedback was gathered on all of SSFIV original characters and core system mechanics in order to achieve the most balanced Street Fighter ever
  • Consumers who purchase the retail will also receive all previously released costume DLC for the Street Fighter IV series (a $40 value) for free making it the most complete offering of the game ever

Player accounts reported by Time Extension were mixed: some praised the mods, while others said their matches lagged more than the native game. Those are anecdotes, not controlled comparisons, so there is no basis here to promise that either project will improve every pairing. Time Extension coverage

How strong is the published performance evidence?

SF4Enhanced’s developers reported a round-transition test with 19,356 frames checked before a fix and 17,106 after it. They reported 112 divergences before the fix and zero afterward, saying all 112 earlier divergences happened at round resets and that they confirmed the fix across two machines on a real connection. This is project-reported testing, not an independent benchmark or evidence that all desyncs are eliminated. SF4Enhanced project repository

Street Fighter IV - Playstation 3 (Renewed)
  • 3D environments and characters. Traditional 2D Street Fighter six-button gameplay. Amazing locations never seen before in a Street Fighter game.
  • Classic Street Fighter characters re-imagined for a new generation of gamers, including the original cast of Street Fighter II.
  • New brawlers: female super-spy Crimson Viper, lucha libre wrestler El Fuerte, mixed martial artist Abel and more!
  • New special moves that go beyond any Street Fighter fan¿s wildest imagination, including Focus Attacks, Super Combos, and the revenge-fueled Ultra Combo system.
  • New gameplay elements provide challenges for both newcomers as well as the most seasoned Street Fighter pro.

Were the mods made using Claude?

Time Extension reported that GitHub listed Anthropic’s Claude among the contributors to both projects. That supports saying Claude appears in contributor credits; it does not establish that Claude independently created either mod or that the developers used no other tools or expertise. The projects also have shared technical roots: SF4Enhanced credits Anthony Danducci’s earlier sf4e work for foundations including reverse-engineered engine APIs, save-state support, GGPO integration, the session protocol, launcher, and overlay. SF4Enhanced also credits Ember with working out much of the online-play analysis and fixes later ported into SF4Enhanced. Time Extension coverage SF4Enhanced project repository

What to check before joining a match

  1. Use the Steam edition. The documented project requirements apply to Ultra Street Fighter IV on Steam, not console editions.
  2. Choose a project and matching build. SF4Enhanced is discontinued; for Ember, check its current release page. Match participants must use compatible builds, and Ember room spectators must match the room’s build too.
  3. Meet the platform prerequisites. Ember v0.9.9 lists Windows 10 or later, x64, and the Microsoft Visual C++ x86 runtime. Its notes flag limitations for Proton or Wine users.
  4. Follow the instructions for that exact build. For SF4Enhanced, the current online-play instructions specify Fixed frame pacing on both PCs; older release guidance may differ.
  5. Account for the connection path. SF4Enhanced can use direct peer-to-peer connections or fall back to relays, whose documented locations are Spain and Germany. Neither route removes latency or guarantees a match free from interruptions.

These are unofficial modifications to the PC game, not an official Capcom update. Ember describes itself as experimental and unofficial; SF4Enhanced likewise identifies as unofficial. Ember release notes SF4Enhanced project repository
