ultrafunk fxmultiband r3.dll: Rebuild a Legacy Audio Plug-in

ultrafunk fxmultiband r3.dll may appear as “is missing,” “was not found,” or “Error loading ultrafunk fxmultiband r3.dll.” ultrafunk fxmultiband r3.dll is a legacy Ultrafunk fx:multiband audio plug-in, not a Windows system file.

The safest fix is to identify the application requesting it, then repair or reinstall that application’s original Ultrafunk, Sonitus:fx, or Cakewalk plug-in content. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random DLL website or copy it into System32.

What ultrafunk fxmultiband r3.dll is

The file belongs to fx:multiband, a multiband dynamics and compressor plug-in developed by Ultrafunk AS. It was part of the older Ultrafunk audio plug-in generation for Windows, supporting VST and DirectX formats.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ultrafunk’s Sonitus:fx technology was later acquired and distributed by Cakewalk. As a result, older Cakewalk and SONAR installations, projects, and plug-in folders may refer to the file even when the current application is no longer branded Ultrafunk.

This file is:

  • A third-party audio plug-in
  • Associated with the Ultrafunk fx:multiband product
  • Used by older VST or DirectX audio hosts
  • Likely part of a legacy 32-bit plug-in generation

It is not:

  • A Windows component
  • A Microsoft runtime
  • A device driver
  • A standard DirectX system file
  • A file that Windows normally restores through System File Checker

Public compatibility information identifies fxMultiband R3 as x32, but the architecture of a particular copy should be checked directly. Do not rely on a filename alone to determine whether a binary is safe or compatible.

What the error usually means

The wording provides useful clues.

“The program can’t start because ultrafunk fxmultiband r3.dll is missing”

The host is trying to load the plug-in from a path where the file is no longer present. The usual causes are an incomplete uninstall, migration to another computer, antivirus quarantine, or a project referencing a plug-in that has since been removed.

“ultrafunk fxmultiband r3.dll was not found”

The application or project has a reference to the plug-in, but the host cannot locate it in the expected plug-in directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Error loading ultrafunk fxmultiband r3.dll”

The file may exist but fail to load. Possible causes include a damaged file, an incompatible 32-bit or 64-bit host, a missing dependency, or an incorrect plug-in path.

“The procedure entry point could not be located”

This commonly indicates that the host found a DLL but it is the wrong build, damaged, or incompatible with the program loading it. Replacing only the named file is not a reliable repair.

“The file is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”

This generally points to a corrupt, incompatible, or wrong-architecture binary. It does not mean Windows requires the file as a system component.

The 60-second answer

  1. Note which application displays the error.
  2. Check whether Windows Security quarantined the plug-in.
  3. Repair or reinstall the original Cakewalk, SONAR, or Ultrafunk installation.
  4. Confirm that the host can load legacy 32-bit plug-ins.
  5. Rescan the intended VST directory.
  6. Replace the old effect in projects that no longer need it.

Do not place the file in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folders are not general-purpose storage for application plug-ins, and copying the DLL there does not convert a 32-bit plug-in into a 64-bit one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 1: Identify the application requesting the plug-in

Before changing files, determine what is actually loading it.

If the error appears during startup

Look at the title bar and the application icon. Record the exact program name and whether the error appears before the main window opens.

Also check the shortcut:

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Review the Target field.
  4. Note the installation folder.
  5. Select Cancel without changing anything.

If the error appears while opening a project

The project probably contains an effect reference to fx:multiband. The application may open normally but fail when it reconstructs the project’s plug-in chain.

Write down:

  • The host or DAW name
  • The project file name
  • Whether the error appears during project loading or plug-in scanning
  • Whether other projects open normally
  • Whether the project was created on another computer

If only one project fails, the missing plug-in reference may be the problem rather than the host installation itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error appears during a plug-in scan

Open the host’s plug-in manager or scan settings and note the directories being searched. Do not add every folder on the computer. Multiple copies of old plug-ins can create duplicate entries or cause an incompatible binary to be loaded.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine

Windows Security may have removed the original file after a scan. Check the quarantine history before reinstalling or restoring anything.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open Windows Security.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections.
  7. Open any detection that refers to the plug-in or its parent application.
  8. Check the detected file path and detection name.

Only restore the file if all of the following are true:

  • It came from trusted, authorized installation media or a known-good backup.
  • The file path belongs to the expected application or plug-in directory.
  • You recognize the parent application.
  • The detection is understood and the file has been validated.

Microsoft warns that allowing an unsafe file can expose the device. Do not create a blanket antivirus exclusion merely to make an unknown DLL load. If the original installer is available, reinstalling the complete package is safer than restoring an isolated file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Protection History shows no matching event, the file may have been removed by another security product, an uninstall process, disk cleanup, or storage damage.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the original Cakewalk, SONAR, or Ultrafunk content

This is the most likely definitive fix.

The DLL is not normally distributed as a standalone Windows component. A complete application or plug-in installation supplies the files, paths, registry information, and supporting content expected by the host.

For a supported Cakewalk installation

  1. Save your projects and close the DAW.
  2. Open Cakewalk.
  3. Select Help.
  4. Select Check for Updates.
  5. Review available application and optional plug-in content.
  6. Install the relevant legacy plug-in component if it is offered.
  7. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
  8. Open the DAW and run its plug-in scan.
  9. Test a blank project before opening the affected project.

The exact available content depends on the Cakewalk product generation and the account or installer media associated with it.

For an older Cakewalk or SONAR installation

  1. Locate the original installer, account download, backup, or installation disc.
  2. Confirm that it belongs to the correct product generation.
  3. Close the DAW and any audio applications.
  4. Run the installer.
  5. Choose Repair if that option is offered.
  6. If repair is unavailable, reinstall the application or its plug-in package.
  7. Keep the installer’s original VST and DirectX options selected when available.
  8. Note the plug-in directory shown by the installer.
  9. Start the host and rescan that directory.

Older products may require original media or an older account download. If no authorized installer is available, do not substitute a DLL copied from an unrelated machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you have an older Ultrafunk installer

Use the original installer only if you are authorized to use it and can verify its source. Install it into the location intended by the host rather than manually placing the DLL in a Windows system folder.

After installation:

  1. Open the DAW.
  2. Open its plug-in manager.
  3. Add or confirm the installer’s VST path.
  4. Run a full or reset plug-in scan if the host provides that option.
  5. Check whether fx:multiband appears in the multiband, dynamics, or audio-effects category.
  6. Load it in a blank project.

If the plug-in loads in a blank project but the old project still reports an error, the project may contain a stale reference or incompatible saved state.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

The R3 plug-in is associated with an older 32-bit plug-in generation. A modern 64-bit DAW may not load it directly.

First determine the host architecture:

  1. Open the DAW.
  2. Open Help and select About, if available.
  3. Look for 32-bit, 64-bit, x86, or x64.
  4. Check the product documentation or installation folder if the About box does not identify it.

A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit applications, but a 64-bit host cannot necessarily load an old 32-bit plug-in without a compatible bridge or migration path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Possible solutions are:

  • Open the project in a compatible 32-bit host.
  • Use the host’s supported plug-in bridge, if one exists.
  • Render or bounce the affected track to audio on a compatible system.
  • Replace fx:multiband with a supported modern effect.
  • Open the project on the original computer and remove or replace the effect.

Installing the DLL into System32 or SysWOW64 does not solve an architecture mismatch. Do not copy both versions of the file into both folders.

Fix 5: Rescan the correct plug-in directory

A valid installation can still appear missing if the host is scanning the wrong directory.

  1. Open the DAW.
  2. Open Preferences, Settings, or Options.
  3. Find the VST, Plug-ins, or Plug-in Manager section.
  4. Review the listed scan paths.
  5. Remove paths that point to deleted drives or untrusted folders.
  6. Add the directory used by the authorized installer.
  7. Save the settings.
  8. Run Scan, Rescan, or Reset and Scan, depending on the host.
  9. Search the plug-in list for fx:multiband or Ultrafunk.

Do not scan every folder containing a file named similarly. A random copy may have the same filename but be damaged, altered, or built for a different host.

Fix 6: Determine whether a dependency is missing

Sometimes the named plug-in is present, but Windows reports another missing file when the host tries to load it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the complete error carefully. A Microsoft runtime problem usually names files such as:

  • MSVCP*.dll
  • VCRUNTIME*.dll
  • MSVCR*.dll

If the error names one of these files, install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package that matches the application architecture. A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 package even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable guidance rather than a DLL download page.

The Visual C++ Redistributable does not provide ultrafunk fxmultiband r3.dll. Installing it only makes sense when the error also identifies a missing Microsoft runtime.

Do not assume that DirectX, .NET, Windows Update, or Visual C++ supplied the Ultrafunk plug-in. There is no evidence that this filename is a Windows or Microsoft runtime file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged

System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management repair protected Windows files and the Windows component store. They do not normally recreate a third-party audio plug-in.

Use them when you also have broader Windows symptoms, such as damaged system components, failed Windows features, or repeated errors involving built-in files.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to complete.
  2. Restart Windows if requested.

Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows, then test the affected application.

If DISM and SFC report repaired Windows files but the plug-in error remains, that result is expected. Reinstall the original audio application instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When manually repeating DISM and SFC becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what it identifies before any repair is applied; its full version performs the repair, while reinstalling the original audio application remains the definitive fix for this plug-in.

Fix 8: Check drivers only when the host also has audio-device problems

A missing Ultrafunk plug-in is not normally a device-driver problem. Do not use Device Manager to repair the DLL itself.

Check drivers only if the DAW also reports that an audio interface, playback device, or recording device is unavailable.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Locate the audio interface or sound device.
  5. Right-click it and select Properties.
  6. Review the Device status message under General.
  7. Open the Driver tab.
  8. Use Update Driver only with a driver from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Reopen the DAW and check its audio-device settings.

Do not uninstall a working audio driver merely because the plug-in is missing. The audio device and the Ultrafunk plug-in are separate components.

If you are manually checking several audio interfaces and driver packages, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its full version performs the driver installation, but updating a driver will not replace ultrafunk fxmultiband r3.dll when the plug-in installation itself is missing.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM and OLE DLLs. Ordinary VST plug-ins are discovered through the host’s plug-in paths and formats, not repaired by registering them as Windows components.

Do not run:

regsvr32 ultrafunk fxmultiband r3.dll

This command also contains a space in the filename and would need quoting even in cases where registration were appropriate. More importantly, an audio plug-in may not provide the DllRegisterServer entry point required by regsvr32.

If you run regsvr32 against a non-registerable plug-in, Windows may report that the entry point was not found. That does not prove the file is missing or that Windows needs a different copy. Use the original installer and the DAW’s plug-in scan instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When System Restore is appropriate

Use System Restore only when the error began after a recent uninstall, cleanup operation, update, or software change and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Create a restore point.
  3. Open the matching Control Panel result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point created before the plug-in disappeared.
  6. Review the affected programs.
  7. Select Next.
  8. Select Finish.
  9. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore reverts system files, registry settings, and installed programs. It does not normally remove personal documents. You may still need to reinstall the parent DAW or plug-in after the rollback.

Is ultrafunk fxmultiband r3.dll a virus

The filename alone cannot answer that.

Evaluate the file using its full context:

  • Is it in the expected application or VST directory
  • Did it come from authorized installation media
  • Does its digital signature, if present, identify a trusted publisher
  • Does Windows Security identify a threat
  • Was it copied from an unknown location
  • Does the host load it only after another untrusted program was installed

If the file is in a temporary, downloads, or unfamiliar directory and you cannot establish its source, do not restore or copy it. Scan the computer with Windows Security and investigate the application that placed it there.

A legitimate filename can be copied onto a malicious file. Conversely, an old plug-in may trigger a security warning because of its age or behavior. The source and scan result must be evaluated together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What not to do

Avoid these common mistakes:

  • Downloading the DLL from a random DLL directory
  • Copying it into System32
  • Copying it into SysWOW64
  • Renaming another DLL to match this filename
  • Registering it with regsvr32 without evidence that it is a COM server
  • Installing x64 Visual C++ when the application needs x86
  • Adding every possible folder to the DAW’s plug-in scan list
  • Creating a permanent antivirus exclusion for an unknown file
  • Assuming SFC can restore a third-party audio effect

Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or an incomplete set of dependencies. They also leave the underlying application installation damaged.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download ultrafunk fxmultiband r3.dll separately?

No trustworthy current standalone download for this exact DLL was identified. Restore it through the original authorized Ultrafunk, Cakewalk, or SONAR installation, original media, or a known-good backup.

Is it part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?

No. It is a legacy third-party audio plug-in and should not be installed as a Windows system file.

Which programs can request it?

Older Cakewalk and SONAR installations, projects using Sonitus:fx or related legacy technology, and other VST or DirectX hosts that loaded the Ultrafunk plug-in may request it. No single modern application accounts for every occurrence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

Public historical evidence points to the R3 plug-in being 32-bit. Verify the actual binary and the host architecture before choosing a bridge or migration method.

Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix the error?

Only when the complete error also names a missing Microsoft runtime, such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll. It does not install the Ultrafunk plug-in.

Should I run DISM and SFC?

Run them when Windows has broader corruption symptoms. They normally will not recreate a missing third-party audio plug-in.

Why does the error appear only when opening one project?

That project likely references fx:multiband. Open it on a compatible system, replace or remove the effect, or use the host’s project migration features.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What information should I collect if the repair fails?

Record the complete error text, requesting application, Windows version, host bitness, plug-in scan path, file location, antivirus result, and any additional DLL named in the message. This distinguishes a missing plug-in from an incompatible host or missing dependency.
