Start with this quick diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, note:
- Which program or Windows feature shows the error
- Whether it appears at startup, when connecting through Remote Desktop, or when redirecting a printer, drive, USB device, or port
- Whether the message says
umrdp.dllis missing, was not found, cannot be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows - Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the problem began after Windows Update, antivirus activity, cleanup software, a driver installation, malware removal, or a disk problem
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteumrdp.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows file. It belongs to the Remote Desktop Services stack, and its description is Remote Desktop Services Device Redirector Service. If Windows cannot find or load it, repair the Windows installation rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
What umrdp.dll does
The file supports device redirection during Remote Desktop sessions. That can include redirected drives, printers, ports, and other supported devices. It is associated with the Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector service, whose service name is UmRdpService.
The file is normally hosted by svchost.exe. It is not normally supplied by Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, a game, or a separate redistributable package.
Common Windows loader messages include:
- “The program can’t start because umrdp.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “umrdp.dll was not found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because umrdp.dll was not found.”
- “umrdp.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “There was a problem starting umrdp.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
These messages describe related loading failures. They do not, by themselves, prove that a particular game or third-party application caused the problem.

Where the file should be
On 64-bit Windows, the native system copy is normally here:
C:WindowsSystem32umrdp.dll
The 32-bit Windows copy used through WOW64 is normally here:
C:WindowsSysWOW64umrdp.dll
The names can be confusing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL. Windows manages this redirection for supported applications.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
A copy found in an unrelated application folder, a temporary directory, or a random download location deserves extra scrutiny. Location alone does not prove that a file is legitimate.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A pending or incomplete update can leave a Windows component missing or inconsistent. Start with the least invasive repair.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if no update explicitly requests it.
- Reproduce the original error.
If the error disappears, the component was likely restored or the servicing problem was completed. If it remains, continue with the component repair commands below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. System File Checker then checks protected system files and restores damaged or missing copies.

- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to stop temporarily.
- After DISM reports that the operation completed successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupted files. It may also report that no integrity violations were found. Either result is useful. Test the affected program or Remote Desktop connection after restarting.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If DISM reports that repair files could not be found, do not copy umrdp.dll from another computer. Microsoft documents repairing the image with a matching Windows installation source using /Source and /LimitAccess. The source must match the installed Windows version and architecture.
Repeating DISM and SFC without recording what each command reports can make troubleshooting unnecessarily difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying system problems and show what needs attention, while repair actions require the full version. It is optional, and when the specific Windows component is damaged, DISM and SFC or a Windows repair installation remain the definitive fixes.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine a system file after a detection. Do not immediately restore it. First confirm its path and investigate the detection.
- Open the Start menu.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
umrdp.dll. - Open the detection details and note the file path.
- Run a current Windows Security scan.
A file in %WINDIR%System32 or %WINDIR%SysWOW64 still needs verification. Check its properties:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the reported path.
- Right-click
umrdp.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
- Review the signer and signature status.
An unexpected unsigned copy, an unfamiliar path, or a detection that returns after restoration should be treated as a possible security problem. Do not add exclusions simply to silence the error. If Windows Security identifies malware, follow its cleanup instructions first, then repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
If you confirm that a genuine Windows file was quarantined as a false positive, use the restore action documented for your Windows Security version. If the file is restored but Windows still reports corruption, run the repair commands rather than relying on the restored copy alone.
Fix 4: Check the Remote Desktop service
The associated service is Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector. Its service name is UmRdpService.
Rank #3
- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector.
- Double-click it.
- Check its Service status.
- If the service is stopped and the DLL is present, select Start.
- Set Startup type only according to your organization’s Windows configuration. Do not change service settings randomly.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Starting the service can help when the file is present but the service is stopped. It will not repair a missing or corrupted DLL. If starting it produces another umrdp.dll error, return to DISM and SFC.

If only device redirection fails while Remote Desktop otherwise connects, check whether redirection has been disabled by Group Policy. A missing DLL is not the only explanation for unavailable printers, drives, USB devices, or ports.
Fix 5: Check the application and Windows architecture
A 32-bit program and a 64-bit program do not use identical DLL loading paths. A manually copied file can therefore appear to exist while still being unusable.
Check the file locations without moving or replacing anything:
- Press Windows + E.
- Enter
%WINDIR%System32in the address bar. - Search for
umrdp.dll. - Repeat with
%WINDIR%SysWOW64if that folder exists. - Compare the location with the error details and the application architecture.
Do not use a historical version or size list as proof that a particular file is correct for your current installation. Windows servicing selects the appropriate build for the installed version and architecture.
If the file exists in both locations but Windows still reports an error, it may be corrupted, mismatched, unsigned, or dependent on another damaged Windows component. DISM and SFC are safer than choosing a replacement manually.
Fix 6: Do not register umrdp.dll with regsvr32
Do not run:
regsvr32 umrdp.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. umrdp.dll is a service DLL, and its known service-related exports do not make it a normal COM-registerable library. A registration attempt may produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found, and it will not restore Remote Desktop functionality.

The correct response to a missing or damaged service DLL is Windows component repair, not registration.
Fix 7: Update a related device driver only when the symptoms point there
If Windows starts normally and only a redirected printer, USB device, or other peripheral stopped working after a driver change, inspect Device Manager.
Recommended Free Tools
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the affected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update driver to search automatically, or install a driver obtained from the device manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test Remote Desktop redirection again.
Do not replace umrdp.dll as a substitute for a device driver. If the issue began immediately after a driver update, the Roll Back Driver option may be appropriate when available.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show which devices need attention, while installing drivers requires the full version. It is optional, and a driver update is relevant only when the symptoms identify a peripheral or driver problem rather than a missing Windows component.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore can help if the failure began after cleanup software, a driver installation, system tuning, or malware removal and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs without removing personal files. It does not replace a backup, and it may not help if no suitable restore point exists.

Fix 9: Use Windows repair reinstall as the escalation path
If Windows Update, DISM, SFC, quarantine review, and System Restore do not resolve the issue, use a repair reinstall rather than a random DLL.
On Windows 11, when available:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available.

For a broader failure, use official Windows installation media and choose Keep personal files and apps. Back up important data first and confirm the edition and architecture match the installed system. If the installation program does not offer the option to keep personal files and apps, stop and correct the installation-media or setup path before proceeding.
Should you download umrdp.dll?
No. Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, an altered signature, or a file with incompatible dependencies. Even a genuine file may not match the servicing state of your Windows installation.
There is no official Microsoft umrdp.dll redistributable download. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or an in-place Windows repair. If antivirus quarantined the file, verify the path and digital signature before considering restoration.
Do not reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because umrdp.dll is missing. Those packages do not normally supply this Windows Remote Desktop component.
FAQ
Is umrdp.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows system DLL. A copy outside the normal Windows directories, an unexpected unsigned copy, or a file flagged by security software requires investigation. The filename alone does not prove that every copy is safe.
Does umrdp.dll control all of Remote Desktop?
No. It is associated with the device and port redirection portion of Remote Desktop Services. A failure may affect redirected devices while the main Remote Desktop connection still works. Other RDP services, policies, firewall settings, and drivers can cause separate connection problems.
Should I copy the file from another Windows computer?
No. The other computer may use a different Windows build, architecture, servicing state, signature, or dependency set. Let Windows restore the correct copy.
What if the file exists but the error continues?
Check the path, digital signature, architecture, and exact application or service named in the error. Then run DISM followed by SFC. If both report no corruption, review Event Viewer and the application’s full error details rather than assuming umrdp.dll is the only damaged component.
Can restarting UmRdpService fix the error?
It can help when the file is present and the service is simply stopped. It cannot repair a missing, corrupted, or mismatched DLL.
