It ranks mates in S, A, B, and C tiers, but it is an editorial snapshot—not an official game ranking or a complete October 2026 roster. LINE Games announced Grade S mates James Lancaster and Melati on September 10, after the list was updated, so neither has an evidence-backed placement in it.
Use the list below to shortlist candidates, then choose for the job your fleet needs: Adventure, Trade, or Combat. Cabin compatibility, expertise, skills, acquisition route, and the investment required to grow a mate can matter more to your lineup than a tier label.
Which mates should I recruit?
Start with the activity you want to improve, then check the mate’s relevant abilities and whether you can place them in a compatible cabin. Pocket Gamer’s tiers are one editorial opinion about relative value; they do not establish that every S-tier mate is the right choice for every fleet.
- Adventure: Look for expertise tied to your plans, such as Nature, Aesthetics, Scouting, or Supply.
- Trade: Consider Purchasing, Sales, Negotiation, or Trade expertise. LINE Games’ Chronicle page describes Helen Raspberry as a Grade S Trade mate specializing in Negotiation.
- Combat: Compare the combat skills and expertise your ship needs, including Artillery, Ramming, Support, or Melee. The Chronicle page identifies Antonio Malatesta as a Grade A Combat mate.
LINE Games’ official guide says mates contribute Skills, Effects, Expertise, and Languages. Skills are active in naval or city combat, Effects are passive, and Expertise is a job-specialized ability. Duplicate skills assigned to one ship can increase their strength. A compatible cabin lets a mate’s abilities contribute to a ship or fleet; assigning a mate to an incompatible cabin reduces Expertise by 50%, and an unassigned mate’s skills and expertise do not affect play. The guide also distinguishes ship expertise from fleet expertise. See the LINE Games Mate guide for its descriptions of these systems.

These mechanics are described on a guide last updated in 2023, so check the current game interface and economy before relying on granular hiring or growth instructions. The guide says mates are hired at city inns, grades run from C to S based on abilities, and hiring and growth costs vary by grade. It describes immediate hiring with Blue Gems or negotiation using Friendship and Ducats, and notes that some mates join through Admiral Chronicles. Availability and interface details may change.

Who are the best mates in Uncharted Waters Origin?
There is no single best mate established for every fleet by these sources. A tier list compresses many possible uses into one ranking, while the official guide describes distinct jobs and abilities. Compare a candidate against the task you need done and the ship or fleet where that mate can actually contribute.

The difference between grade and tier is also important. The official Chronicle page identifies Helen Raspberry as Grade S / Trade, Antonio Malatesta as Grade A / Combat, and Louise de Beaujoyeulx as a special Grade S / Adventure mate. Pocket Gamer puts Helen and Antonio in S tier but Louise in A tier. Grade is the game’s classification; a publication’s tier is its own assessment. Louise is described as recruitable at specific Port Inns after viewing the Chronicle ending. Check the LINE Games Chronicle mate page for the listed Chronicle and inn conditions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are James Lancaster and Melati included?
No. LINE Games announced Grade S James Lancaster and Grade S paid mate Melati on September 10, 2026—six days after Pocket Gamer’s list update. The announcement describes James as gameplay-hireable, but the available sources do not compare either new mate’s performance with the listed roster. Neither should be inserted into a tier by inference. For an October placement, look for a later ranking or current in-game evidence that supports a direct comparison. The announcement is available on LINE Games’ official news page.
How to use the list when building a crew
- Choose the activity. Decide whether the ship or fleet needs Adventure, Trade, or Combat support.
- Match expertise and effects to the task. Check the relevant job expertise and whether the mate offers active skills or passive effects that help your intended use.
- Check cabin fit. Plan a compatible assignment; the official guide says an incompatible cabin reduces Expertise by 50%, while unassigned mates’ skills and expertise do not affect play.
- Confirm access and investment. Check current inn, Chronicle, language, hiring, and growth requirements in-game. The general guide says costs vary by grade, but it does not make grade a guarantee of universal value.
- Use the tier as a shortlist, not a command. A lower-listed mate who fills a missing role may suit your fleet better than an S-tier option that cannot contribute effectively in its assigned cabin.
LINE Games describes mates as “the Admiral’s companions who provide aid while Sailing.” That broad role is why a practical recruitment decision should weigh the activity, fit, and cost together rather than treating a tier as a substitute for fleet planning.
