Undertale Before Deltarune: Is It Necessary?

No. You can play DELTARUNE without finishing UNDERTALE first. Toby Fox’s official DELTARUNE FAQ describes DELTARUNE as a game you can play after UNDERTALE “if you want to,” making the earlier game optional context rather than a prerequisite.

The useful distinction is between required order and preferred order. The games are set in different worlds, although Fox says connections may exist. Playing UNDERTALE first can give you extra familiarity with those connections and references, but the FAQ does not say that it is needed to understand DELTARUNE.

The official answer: Undertale is optional

The clearest answer comes from Toby Fox’s official DELTARUNE FAQ, updated June 24, 2026. It says: “It’s just a game you can play after you complete UNDERTALE, if you want to.” That wording presents UNDERTALE as an optional preceding experience, not a required tutorial, prologue or entry ticket.

The same FAQ also says, “To rephrase that, DELTARUNE’s world is a different one.” It immediately adds that this “doesn’t mean there will be no connections at all though.” In practical terms, you can begin DELTARUNE first and treat it as its own game, while players who know UNDERTALE may recognize more of the relationship between the two works.

There is no published statistic showing that people understand or enjoy DELTARUNE better after playing UNDERTALE. The official FAQ does not report a controlled comparison of new players and returning players. Any benefit from playing first is therefore best understood as optional context, not a measured requirement.

How the two games are connected—and how they are not

They do not share one straightforward story timeline

Fox’s description rules out treating DELTARUNE as a conventional sequel that assumes you completed UNDERTALE. Its world is different, so the basic premise is not “finish the first game to know what happens next.” You are entering a separate setting with its own story structure.

That does not make the games unrelated. The FAQ deliberately leaves room for connections. A player familiar with UNDERTALE may notice parallels, returning ideas or references that carry additional meaning. Those observations are part of the optional experience Fox is acknowledging, not evidence that the second game is inaccessible without the first.

Prior knowledge changes recognition, not access

Playing UNDERTALE first may let you recognize a connection immediately instead of encountering it as a new detail. It can also give you a sense of how Fox uses familiar concepts across different worlds. The available official information does not quantify how many references there are or how much extra context a first game supplies, so avoid treating this as a guaranteed increase in comprehension or enjoyment.

If you start with DELTARUNE, you can still follow its own characters, setting and events as they are presented. The FAQ does not warn that new players will be confused, blocked or unable to finish the game. “Optional context” is the accurate description; “mandatory background” is not.

What playing Undertale first can add

A richer perspective on possible connections

The main reason to choose UNDERTALE first is curiosity about the relationship Fox says may exist between the games. You will approach DELTARUNE with prior knowledge of the earlier game’s vocabulary and design, which can make an allusion feel more immediately recognizable.

This is a perspective choice, not a checklist. The FAQ confirms that connections are possible but does not provide a reference guide or promise a particular payoff for every player. If you enjoy spotting links between games, the first play is a sensible way to prepare. If you would rather encounter DELTARUNE on its own terms, skipping ahead is also consistent with Fox’s guidance.

A separate complete game before you begin

UNDERTALE is not described by the FAQ as a short prerequisite chapter. Choosing it first means committing to that game because you want to play it, not because DELTARUNE demands it. This matters if your immediate goal is to begin the newer game: waiting for an optional experience delays that goal without satisfying a stated requirement.

Potentially different spoiler priorities

Some players prefer to discover each game without any outside context, while others prefer to understand every available connection as early as possible. The official FAQ does not set a spoiler policy or say that one order protects a particular twist. Decide based on whether you want maximum separation between the games or the possibility of recognizing links from the start.

What happens if you play Deltarune first?

You can begin with the available Deltarune chapters

Starting with DELTARUNE does not require a completed UNDERTALE save, a transfer code or any other prerequisite identified by the official FAQ. Begin with the first available chapter and let the game establish its own world and story.

The FAQ says Chapters 1 and 2 make up the full demo, while Chapters 1–5 have been completed so far and Chapter 6 is in development as of the June 24, 2026 update. That status is time-sensitive, so a later update may change which chapters are available.

Follow Deltarune’s chapter order

Fox’s advice about order applies inside DELTARUNE: for a first play, proceed through the chapters in sequence. The FAQ says you can start any chapter, while advising that remembering the story generally will be enough. That is permission for unusual replay situations, not a recommendation to skip ahead on your first run.

  1. Start with Chapter 1.
  2. Continue to Chapter 2 after completing or otherwise finishing your first chapter experience.
  3. Play the next available chapter in numerical order.
  4. Keep using the latest released chapter before moving to an unreleased one; Chapter 6 was reported in development in the June 24, 2026 FAQ update.

This chapter sequence is separate from the question of whether UNDERTALE comes first. You can follow the recommended internal order of DELTARUNE even when DELTARUNE is your first game in the pair.

Which order should you choose?

Choice What it gives you What it does not give you Best fit
Undertale first Prior familiarity that may make connections and references easier to recognize. No official guarantee of better comprehension, enjoyment or access to Deltarune. Players who want optional context and enjoy comparing related works.
Deltarune first Immediate access to Deltarune as a separate-world game, without waiting for another playthrough. The perspective of already knowing Undertale when a possible connection appears. Players whose priority is starting Deltarune now or preserving a separate first impression.
Play both later A chance to revisit connections after experiencing each game independently. A single definitive order endorsed as necessary by the FAQ; none is stated. Players who want to form their own interpretation over multiple playthroughs.

There is no losing choice here. The evidence supports two valid starting points: play UNDERTALE because you want that experience, or start DELTARUNE because it does not require the earlier game.

A practical recommendation for different readers

If you already own Undertale

Play it first if you are interested in seeing how Fox’s ideas connect across the two worlds and you do not mind postponing DELTARUNE. Treat the decision as an optional context preference, not homework.

If Deltarune is the game you want now

Start DELTARUNE. The official answer is explicitly permissive, and nothing in the FAQ says you must stop to complete UNDERTALE before proceeding. Begin with Chapter 1 and continue numerically through the chapters available on your platform.

If you dislike spoilers or outside expectations

Starting with DELTARUNE keeps your first encounter focused on its own presentation. You can play UNDERTALE later and then reconsider any connections with the benefit of hindsight. Conversely, playing UNDERTALE first is reasonable if recognizing possible links matters more to you than preserving separation.

If you want the creator’s recommended order

Use this two-part rule: UNDERTALE before DELTARUNE is optional, but DELTARUNE chapters should be played in order for a first run. That is the most precise way to follow the official FAQ without turning optional context into a requirement.

Where Deltarune is currently available

The June 24, 2026 official FAQ lists the full game for PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. It lists the current demo for PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4; the console demos can be played on their respective newer consoles.

The FAQ says Chapters 1–5 have been completed so far and Chapter 6 is in development. The official UNDERTALE homepage also promotes DELTARUNE Chapters 1–5 as available. Because chapter releases and platform availability can change, check the current official FAQ before making a purchase or planning a chapter-by-chapter playthrough.

Physical editions

There is no physical DELTARUNE edition listed as available in the FAQ. Its wording is “Someday, probably, but not yet.” That means choosing UNDERTALE first because you want a physical copy is a separate purchasing preference, not a gameplay requirement for DELTARUNE.

Common misunderstandings to avoid

“Different world” does not mean “no relationship”

Fox’s wording contains both parts: DELTARUNE has a different world, and connections may still exist. Saying the games are completely unrelated goes beyond the FAQ, while calling DELTARUNE a direct continuation also misstates it.

“Play in order” refers to Deltarune chapters

The chapter-order advice should not be inflated into a demand to complete UNDERTALE first. The FAQ discusses the two questions separately: prior UNDERTALE play is optional, and remembering the DELTARUNE story is generally enough when considering chapter access.

There is no evidence-based percentage or score to compare

No named statistic measures how much easier, clearer or more enjoyable DELTARUNE is for people who played UNDERTALE. Be wary of claims that attach a precise improvement to either order unless new, verifiable evidence is provided.

Bottom line for first-time players

You do not need to play UNDERTALE before DELTARUNE. Fox’s official FAQ makes that explicit while acknowledging that the games can have connections despite taking place in different worlds. Choose UNDERTALE first only if you want the optional context; otherwise start DELTARUNE with Chapter 1 and play its chapters in sequence.
