Undertale is worth considering if you want an RPG built around humor, memorable character dialogue, and choices—not simply defeating everything in your way. Its defining hook is that you do not have to destroy anyone. That makes it a better fit for players curious about how an RPG’s choices can shape its encounters and story than for readers seeking a conventional combat-first adventure.

What is Undertale?

Undertale is a role-playing game developed and published by tobyfox, released on Steam on September 15, 2015. The game’s official website emphasizes “humor, character dialogue, and player choice.” Steam sums up its unusual premise as “The RPG game where you don’t have to destroy anyone.”

That premise is the clearest way to set expectations: this is an RPG that asks you to consider how you approach encounters, rather than treating violence as the only available response. Steam also tags the game for choices and multiple endings, signaling that decisions are part of its appeal. Those details do not mean every choice has equal weight, but they do make player agency central to its identity.

What makes Undertale different from other RPGs?

Humor and character dialogue are central

Undertale puts its characters and their conversations near the center of the experience. If you enjoy games whose tone and personality come through in dialogue and humor, that is a strong reason to try it. If you prefer a story delivered mainly through serious exposition or a large-scale, realistic presentation, its appeal may be less immediate.

  • Explore the world of RPG with fun characters in Henteko Whether you defeat or miss your opponents, it's all up to you

Choices connect to the way you approach encounters

The non-destruction premise changes the usual expectation that an RPG encounter must end with an opponent defeated. It invites you to think about your approach and how it relates to the wider story. The game is also identified on Steam with multiple endings, so players drawn to choice-driven narratives have a clear reason to pay attention to decisions as they play.

Combat is part of the identity, not just a default solution

Rather than describing the game as a standard combat-first RPG, Steam foregrounds the possibility of not destroying anyone. That framing makes encounters part of the game’s central question: how will you respond? Whether that approach works for you depends on whether you find the relationship between encounters, choices, and story engaging—or would rather have combat operate as a straightforward obstacle to overcome.

Pixel-art presentation sets a particular tone

The game’s role-playing and pixel-art presentation will suit players who welcome a deliberately stylized look. It is not presented as a realistic, high-fidelity showcase. If you are open to a game whose personality comes through in dialogue, humor, and choices rather than visual realism, the presentation is part of that overall appeal.

Is Undertale worth playing for you?

It is a promising fit if you are interested in:

  • RPGs that let you consider alternatives to destroying opponents.
  • Humor and character dialogue as major parts of the experience.
  • Choices, multiple endings, and a story that invites you to think about your approach.
  • A stylized pixel-art presentation rather than realism.

You may want to look elsewhere if you mainly want a conventional combat-focused RPG, or if the game’s stylized presentation and dialogue-centered appeal do not match what you enjoy. These are fit considerations, not claims that the game works the same way for every player.

How well reviewed is Undertale?

In a Steam English-language review snapshot returned on October 8, 2026, Undertale had 155,959 reviews, 96% of them positive, and Steam labeled the sentiment “Overwhelmingly Positive.” These are live platform figures that can change; they are user-review sentiment, not a professional critics’ score. Steam’s store listing is the place to check the current display.

Metacritic’s listing showed 43 critic reviews in the available snapshot. That is an aggregator’s count, not a score or a substitute for reading individual reviews.
