Unity vs Unreal Engine for Making Your First Indie Game

Choose Unity for a first project that is 2D, mobile-first, deliberately small, or aimed at several platforms with a beginner-oriented workflow. Choose Unreal Engine when the game is primarily 3D, its identity depends on lighting or cinematic presentation, or you want to build gameplay logic with Blueprint visual scripting and can support a heavier editor. Neither engine is universally easier: the right first choice follows your game’s scope, target devices, preferred way to learn, and computer.

Unity and Unreal answer different first-project needs

Both engines can create complete commercial games, but they encourage different starting points. Unity presents a component-based architecture built around GameObjects and components. Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) puts strong emphasis on a 3D editor, Blueprint visual scripting, and a rendering-oriented workflow. For a beginner, that difference matters more than a generic claim that one engine is “easy.”

The recommendation in this guide is an editorial fit assessment based on each vendor’s documented workflows and platform scope. It is not a performance benchmark or a controlled study of beginner usability. Your own prototype can reveal a better answer than a popularity poll.

Question Unity is usually the better fit when… Unreal is usually the better fit when…
What are you making? A 2D game, mobile game, or modest 2D/3D project. A 3D game in which lighting, materials, scale, or cinematic presentation are central.
How do you want to build logic? You are comfortable learning components and writing code as your main path. You want to prototype with node-based Blueprint graphs, with C++ available later.
Where will it run? You need a broad beginner workflow for web, desktop, AR/VR, and mobile publishing. You need the platforms and features covered by Epic’s UE5 licensing and target-platform documentation.
What computer do you have? You want to match a published, version-specific requirement for Windows, macOS, or Linux. Your system can handle a demanding 3D editor and is configured around DirectX 12 for most games.
What is the first learning resource? Unity Hub, a template, and the Unity Essentials pathway. “Your First Hour in Unreal Engine,” Blueprint material, and Epic’s new-user guides.

When Unity is the smarter first engine

2D, mobile, and intentionally small projects

Unity’s documented scope covers both 2D and 3D applications, and its Personal plan supports publishing to web, desktop, AR/VR, and mobile. That combination makes it a practical starting point for a small 2D platformer, a mobile puzzle game, or a project whose visual ambition is intentionally limited while you learn production fundamentals.

Unity is also a sensible choice when you want to keep the first game’s technical surface area small. A compact scene, a handful of GameObjects, components for behavior, and a short script can produce a playable loop without requiring you to learn every rendering feature in the editor. This is a scope recommendation, not a claim that Unity projects are automatically faster or more performant.

A documented beginner route

Unity’s first-project guidance directs new users to install Unity Hub, check system requirements, select a template, and create a project. The current guide references Unity 6.1 or later. Unity Learn provides the Unity Essentials pathway, which gives a staged introduction to the editor and core concepts rather than asking a beginner to assemble a curriculum from random videos.

The architecture is worth understanding before you open a tutorial. A GameObject is an entity in a scene; components provide its transform, visuals, physics, input response, or other behavior. Scripts become components too. When you can explain which GameObject owns a behavior, which component stores its state, and which event changes that state, you have a useful mental model for debugging.

Broad platform ambitions

If the first release must cover mobile and desktop, or include a web build, Unity’s published Personal-plan platform list is a direct match. You still need to test input, memory, resolution, performance, and store requirements on each target; a platform being supported does not make every project portable without adjustment.

When Unreal Engine is the smarter first engine

3D-first games and visual presentation

Unreal is a strong first choice when the game is fundamentally 3D and the visual presentation is part of the design rather than a later polish pass. Epic’s onboarding material centers on building a simple 3D platformer in its “Your First Hour in Unreal Engine” course, and its documentation covers rendering features, quick starts, scripting, release notes, and target-platform configuration.

That emphasis can be valuable for a solo developer making a third-person exploration game, a first-person prototype, or a small experience where lighting and materials communicate mood. It can also be more setup than a tiny 2D project needs. A larger editor and more rendering options create more decisions, so set a narrow first milestone instead of trying to learn the entire engine.

Blueprint as the first scripting language

UE5 includes the Blueprint visual scripting system. You can express gameplay logic as connected nodes, inspect values in the editor, and iterate without beginning with C++ syntax. C++ remains available for systems that benefit from native code or for teams that prefer a code-first architecture, but a beginner can make a playable prototype through Blueprint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Blueprint does not remove programming concepts. You still need variables, events, conditions, loops, references, state, and a plan for how actors communicate. Treat a graph as a program, keep functions small, name variables clearly, and resist building one enormous event graph. The visual format changes the entry point; it does not eliminate the need for logic and debugging.

Heavier setup is a trade-off, not a verdict

Unreal’s rendering-oriented workflow can demand more from your hardware and your attention. That is acceptable when the game’s identity depends on 3D fidelity, but unnecessary complexity can slow a first 2D project. Start with the smallest template that demonstrates your intended camera, movement, and interaction rather than enabling every feature immediately.

Engine Entry condition Commercial threshold or royalty Important qualification
Unity Personal Free for hobbyists and small indie teams; no credit card is required. Unity says Pro is required for businesses with more than $200,000 in funding or annual revenue. The threshold concerns business funding or annual revenue, and plan eligibility should be rechecked before launch.
Unreal Engine Free for game developers under $1 million in gross product revenue, with source-code access and all platforms and features. For qualifying commercial games, 5% royalty on qualifying lifetime gross revenue above $1 million. Epic says revenue from sales in the Epic Games Store is royalty-free; confirm the definition of qualifying revenue for your product.

These models affect different moments. Unity’s stated trigger is a business funding or annual-revenue threshold, while Unreal’s stated trigger is product revenue and a royalty above the lifetime threshold. Keep records for the legal entity, the product, regional sales, refunds, and platform deductions so you can apply the current terms accurately. This article does not provide legal or tax advice.

Hardware and operating-system requirements

Unity’s published requirements

Unity publishes requirements by editor version. Unity 6.5 documentation lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support. For Linux, the documented baseline includes an x64 CPU with SSE2 support and graphics capable of OpenGL 3.2 or Vulkan. Check the exact requirements for the editor version you install, because a project can open on a supported operating system while still becoming uncomfortable to use with a weak GPU, little memory, or a slow drive.

Unreal’s graphics API guidance

Epic’s onboarding documentation says some features require DirectX 11 but recommends DirectX 12 for most Unreal games. It also asks developers to configure quality settings and ray-tracing options for the target platform. Those statements describe compatibility and configuration, not comparative frame rates. A machine that can launch the editor may still need lower scalability settings, simpler lighting, or disabled ray tracing for a practical solo workflow.

A sensible hardware check before committing

  • Install the intended editor version and create a blank project before buying assets or planning a large world.
  • Open the editor, move around a sample scene, run a play-in-editor session, and watch for sustained stutter or crashes.
  • Confirm that your target operating system and graphics API meet the vendor’s published requirements.
  • Keep project files on a fast drive with enough free space for imported assets, generated files, and backups.
  • Test the actual target device early if you are making a mobile or lower-powered release; desktop editor performance is not a substitute for device testing.

How to start your first Unity project

  1. Install Unity Hub and verify the editor requirement. Use the current Unity first-project guide and select an editor version it supports, such as Unity 6.1 or later where that guide applies.
  2. Check system requirements before creating content. Confirm your operating system, graphics support, and available storage. Resolve compatibility issues now rather than after importing a large asset library.
  3. Choose the smallest relevant template. Select a 2D template for a sprite-based game or a lightweight 3D template for a modest 3D prototype. Do not choose a high-fidelity setup merely because it looks impressive in a sample scene.
  4. Create one playable loop. Build a single scene with movement, one interaction, a win or loss condition, and a restart path. Keep the number of GameObjects small enough that you can explain each object’s purpose.
  5. Use the Unity Essentials pathway alongside the prototype. Study a concept when the project needs it—scenes, components, input, prefabs, or basic scripting—then apply it immediately.
  6. Test the intended platform early. Make a development build for your target device or browser as soon as the loop works. Record input differences, aspect-ratio issues, loading time, and memory problems.
  7. Expand only after the loop survives a fresh start. Close and reopen the project, reproduce the game from a clean launch, and keep a backup before adding systems such as inventory, save data, or multiple levels.

How to start your first Unreal Engine project

  1. Install UE5 and review Epic’s new-user documentation. Read the quick-start material for the editor version you intend to use, including target-platform notes and release changes.
  2. Take the “Your First Hour in Unreal Engine” course. Its simple 3D platformer provides a bounded route through the editor, actors, movement, and a playable result.
  3. Select a template that matches the camera and genre. A first-person or third-person starting point can remove setup work, but delete anything you do not understand before building on it.
  4. Prototype the core loop in Blueprint. Create the player action, an obstacle or opponent, a success condition, and a reset. Use named variables and small functions so the graph remains readable.
  5. Inspect the result in play mode. Set breakpoints or watch values where available, reproduce one bug at a time, and identify whether the problem is an input event, a reference, a collision, or a state transition.
  6. Configure quality for your actual target. Follow Epic’s guidance for target-platform quality and ray-tracing settings. Start with conservative scalability while you establish the game loop.
  7. Move to C++ only for a reason. If Blueprint expresses the prototype clearly, keep it there. Introduce C++ when a specific system, team convention, or performance requirement justifies the additional build and debugging workflow.

Learning curve: what beginners actually have to learn

Unity’s concepts

  • Scenes and GameObjects: what exists in a level and how objects are organized.
  • Components and scripts: where data and behavior live.
  • Prefabs: how reusable objects are authored and instantiated.
  • Input, collisions, and physics: how player actions become world events.
  • Build settings and platform differences: how the same project becomes a device or web build.

The main risk is tutorial dependency: copying components without understanding their lifecycle can produce a project that works only in the exact tutorial order. After each lesson, change one requirement and explain why the code still works.

Unreal’s concepts

  • Actors and components: the objects that populate a level and the capabilities attached to them.
  • Blueprint graphs: events, variables, functions, and references represented as nodes.
  • Levels, game modes, and player controllers: the framework that decides what runs and who the player is.
  • Collision, input, and possession: the path from a device action to an actor response.
  • Quality and platform configuration: the settings that make a 3D project usable on the target hardware.

The main risk is graph sprawl. A visual graph can become difficult to trace even when it looks approachable. Split reusable logic into functions, keep responsibilities separated, and name references according to what they represent.

Choosing by project type

Pick Unity for a 2D platformer or puzzle game

Use Unity’s 2D template, make one level, and focus on movement, collision, camera behavior, and a clear restart loop. The engine’s documented 2D scope and beginner pathway align with this contained project. Delay menus, achievements, analytics, and online features until the core interaction is reliable.

Pick Unity for a mobile-first release

Unity’s Personal-plan documentation lists mobile publishing alongside web, desktop, and AR/VR. Start device testing early because touch input, thermal limits, memory, screen sizes, and store packaging can alter design decisions. A mobile target is not simply a desktop game displayed on a smaller screen.

Pick Unreal for a 3D action or exploration prototype

Use the first-hour platformer course as a bounded introduction, then replace its example objective with your own smallest interaction. Blueprint lets you test movement, triggers, pickups, and simple enemy reactions while keeping the experiment inside the 3D editor.

When both engines fit

Make the same tiny vertical slice in each engine for one evening: one scene, one controllable character, one interaction, one success condition, and one restart. Choose the editor in which you can clearly explain the scene structure, input path, and save or reset behavior. This is a suggested decision exercise, not a reported comparative test.

Common first-project pitfalls and fixes

Starting with an oversized game

An open-world RPG, online service, or content-heavy simulation multiplies unknowns before you know the editor. Reduce the idea to one mechanic and one environment. A finished small loop teaches more than an unfinished design document.

  • Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
  • Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
  • Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.

The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
  • Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

Confusing engine support with a finished port

A platform list means the engine can target that platform; it does not guarantee identical controls, performance, rendering, certification, or store packaging. Build on the target device and keep platform-specific work visible in your plan.

Optimizing before measuring

Neither the Unity nor Unreal guidance supplied here provides a controlled frame-rate comparison. Do not select an engine on an internet benchmark that does not match your project. Profile your own scene after you have a repeatable build and a defined target.

Ignoring license changes

Unity’s $200,000 funding or annual-revenue condition and Unreal’s $1 million product-revenue threshold with a 5% royalty above it are policy figures, not guarantees for the life of your project. Recheck the current terms before a public launch, a funding round, or a monetization change.

Learning features instead of shipping a loop

Use the official learning paths as support for a concrete milestone. If a tutorial does not help you implement movement, interaction, feedback, restart, or a build, postpone it until the project needs the concept.

A decision checklist you can use today

  • Is the first game primarily 2D or mobile? Start with Unity.
  • Is the first game primarily 3D, with visual presentation central to its identity? Start with Unreal.
  • Do you want a code-oriented component workflow? Unity may be the clearer first route.
  • Do you want node-based logic before learning C++? Unreal’s Blueprint path may fit better.
  • Does your computer meet the chosen editor’s current requirements, including graphics API guidance?
  • Have you checked the current licensing page for your business status, funding, expected revenue, and sales platforms?
  • Can you describe the smallest playable loop in one sentence and build it in one scene?

If your answers split evenly, run the same one-evening prototype in both engines and keep the one whose scene, input, and reset flow you can explain without relying on copied steps.
